The best landing site in early 1943 at the "Santa Ana" hex would likely be the Balboa Peninsula as it would probably not come under fire from Battery 155 in Bosla Chica (South of Huntington Beach). Northern Newport Beach beaches and Huntington Beach would be observed from Battery 155 (two 155's on Panama mounts with protected magazines).

Beaches further South would have significant difficulties with the exits and favorable defensive positions.

Seems like that has to be Pacific Pallisades or perhaps Malibu...probably in the Los Angeles hex.

A few years ago I drove north across the Golden Gate bridge to Marin county to visit the park on the headlands. Lo and behold there were several sites there that once held coastal batteries - really big ones! At least 14", possibly 16". Fantastic elevated view of the ocean and any targets that might come their way! I'm sure there were batteries on the other side of the bridge, in The Presidio military camp area, but they didn't get the cliff view.
When I look at the SFO Harbour Defences in game it helps to have seen the site they were on.

jmalter -> RE: Invasion West Coast! (6/16/2016 2:22:18 AM)

I just dunno what advantage your opponent seeks to seize here - other than the slim possibility of an auto-victory. Surely he knows that every LCU that lands, the majority of his hefty transports, many of his airplanes & a significant portion of his naval combat power are gonna be destroyed?
The lack of Allied SigInt of this invasion says that the IJ LCU aren't prepped for their invasion or follow-on targets. If that's the case, the IJ invaders are gonna be extremely vulnerable (bulk disruption after landing) to immediate counter-attack.

NTM the well-tended 'controlled minefields', AA defenses & artillery observation towers. The Golden Gate was wired up pretty tight!

Invasion California!
_____________________________________________________________________________

I canīt update everything in one go and I wont be able to do everything tonight. But Japanese have landed at 3 location around Los Angeles! This has been done under horrendous losses as the landings havnīt been prepared. I estimate almost 1000 Japanese AV disabled in the first wave for no Allied losses.

Iīm looking at the possibility of an Allied armored counterattack to throw the invaders back into the sea. Need to go through everything which will take time because...

..."WC invaded! Counter invasion forces released."

Iīll try updating things as I go through the turn. Looking quickly at the air reinforcements its a big letdown. Most bombers arrive as empty shells and all arrive with abysmal pilots. On the bright side I now have 75 P47s on the EC. [sm=00000028.gif]

Troops arriving looks decent tho. Nothing spectacular but the Armored units will be certainly come in handy.

Interesting times ahead. But I remain firm in my belief that this is mission impossible for the Japanese.

Emergency reinforcements Air Groups
_____________________________________________________________________________

Basically they are pretty much useless besides the 75 P47s. Most arrive as empty shells which I have no use for. Some of the USMC groups arrive with planes though including one with 9 Corsairs. But they instead have completely ****e pilots. 30 EXP/10 skill pilots.

To be honest I would probably been happier without them. 90% of the squadrons will just be sent to the EC as training squadrons. I have absolutely no use for them. Only useful squadrons are the 3xP47s, one 17 plane P38G squadron and the 9 plane USMC Corsair squadron. Rest I have either no planes for or the ones with planes I donīt have pilots for.

But the 75 P47s alone will be worth 500 P40s. [sm=00000028.gif]

Also, don't you get a few supply convoys with things like planes and tanks for the pools?

Canoerebel -> RE: Invasion West Coast! (6/16/2016 7:52:09 PM)

A 1943 invasion of the West Coast is a highly unusual event in the history of WitP and AE, Jocke, so you know your readers will be salivating over details. We're all interested in seeing how it turns out. It kinda seems like an "all or nothing affair." One side or the other is going to emerge staggering and bloody. Since you attended so well to fort building, I suspect it will be your opponent.

There have been a few other West Coast invasions. I think the most renowned might be Mogami's "Beer Made Me Do It," early in the WitP days. I don't think that turned out well for him.

I think there are ways to configure a successful (perhaps even lethal) West Coast offensive for Japan. But I think timing is everything and the Japanese player has to begin the war with that strategy in place. Generally speaking, a good Japanese player would be targeting American industry or auto victory or both.

If I took on a meticulous, aggressive, elite Japanese player, I'd sweat out a West Coast offensive in 1942. But I think it would be very difficult in '43 unless the Allies player hadn't attended to things at home. If he stripped North America of everything to ship it to the front or to India, things might get pretty tight.

Good luck!

In my neck of the woods is one of the many coastal forts the Navy squandered their funding on during the Spanish/American War....Fort DeSoto:

http://fortdesoto.com/

Wasting their money on forts like this is one of the main reasons the Navy didn't have sufficient shipping to be able to send the Rough Rider's horses along with the troops to Cuba.

Used to love it as a kid when my parents would take the family to the park for a day at the beach.

It's located at the southern tip of the Pinellas Peninsula that forms Tampa Bay.

2nd Armored Div is going to be murder on his Ronsons. 18 Shermans, 30 x 57 mm ATG. Tons of heavy infantry weapons. If you get that into LA he will never take it.

The level of disruption of his landing force is indeed shocking.

LA looks like the target.

Emergency reinforcements Air Groups pt. II
_____________________________________________________________________________

Finally sorted out all the air groups arriving and its pretty much as I feared. The complete lack of attention to the WC reinforcements are obvious. [:(]

USAAF groups arrive with mediocre pilots (50/50) but with a few exceptions (3x25 P47s) they arrive without planes. Mostly 2 planes not seldom of models that havnīt even begun production. Some arrive with A-36s or P41Ns for example. The few bomber groups that arrive are devoid of both planes and pilots with the exception of 4 groups of 2Es that arrive with planes and pilots. You do get a ****load of transport groups with planes though. Because that is what you really need... [8|]

USN/USMC groups arrive with planes. Except the fighter squadrons (because reasons [8|]). Problem is that (and any allied player will know this) is that they arrive without pilots and USN and especially USMC pilots are chronically short in supply.

To sum it up in a short sentence. The air reinforcement (with the exception of 3 P47 squadrons and a half strength P38G squadron) are completely and utterly useless. They will certainly help with training in the future but outside that there is no use for them. All I could do was to move them to the EC as training squadrons. All in all I estimate the total of aircraft arriving (not counting transports) are probably no more then 200 planes.

To be honest I had expected more useful stuff. You donīt even get any extra planes to bolster the pools. A real disappointment. [:(]

As someone who reads both AArs, the only thing I can write is : good luck.

It's really enjoyable to follow this, AND the other part in Lowpe's AAR as well. Thank you [:D]

I also wanted to say though, I don't like how a few posts in here have been dismissive of this operations, calling it foolish or doomed or pointless.

I don't know how this will turn out, and it may be that Lowpe will crash and burn. I would have probably not done this in his place, I'm more of a cautious sort.
But I enjoy reading these 2 AAR, and I can attest he worked hard to prepare this operation. And from a reader's standpoint it's a very nice deviation from the norm [:)]

JocMeister -> RE: Invasion West Coast! (6/17/2016 8:06:54 AM)

Allied defenses
_____________________________________________________________________________

Here is a screen of the defenses at LA and SD. As can be seen LA is far beyond Japanese capabilities to overcome. I would have liked another division at SD but there wasnīt time. If I hadnīt acted on the sub DL I would only have had 2 IDs there...[X(]

Donīt know if the target is SD, LA or both. No prepp on either city. I have a command HQ and Corp HQ prepping for both although prepp is low. Troops have various prepp. Some on the city but some have offensive prepp for targets in Alaska. Ever the optimist I decided to not change the offensive prepp. Once the evil empire is thrown back into the sea I want to counter attack quickly. [sm=00000028.gif]

I still feel extremely confident in my ability to deal with this. SD is a slight worry depending on what Jeff does. But in order to isolate SD he has to divide his forces into two and defend a clear hex without forts.

A Japanese paradrop at Corvallis failed miserably but threw some units off stratmode. There is what looks like a invasion TF west of Astoria. I still have 3 divisions in the North covering Seattle, Tacoma and Portland. Forts are at 9 at all those locations. If the south turns out to be an elaborate feint I should have plenty of time to shift back to the North. 1 division are acting reserve in SF in stratmode. Besides that the ER will need 2-3 days to shift to stratmode and can be diverted north if needed.

Allied counterattack
_____________________________________________________________________________

We are still gathering strength and repairing aircraft. Iīm also waiting for the Japanese to capture their first base. This will allow me to sweep hopefully crippling the KB airwings in the first crucial days. If I can succeed with that I have a real good chance of achieving air superiority.

I have LBA naval strike craft ready but lack of pilots means I get only one shot at attacking shipping. Not going to risk that against the KB while crippling my on Fighters to escort duty. Attacking KB itself is a complete waste of time. If I canīt punch through the KB cap in 44 with 2000 planes I wont be able to do it with 80 planes.

It will be a struggle for air supremacy here and the key will be KB. Without it I think Jeff will have a hard time. The places he landed at isnīt built up and will only give him a level 0, level 1 and level 2 airfield. I have 60 4Es ready and another 24 on their way. It should be enough to suppress a smaller airfield.

I have 300 Fighters of the Seventh AirForce ready to begin sweeping. They are spread out between bases North of LA. 75 of them are P40Ks. In 3-4 days 50 P38s will be ready and in 6-7 days the P47s will be ready. I stripped the squadrons in India of the best pilots. They will fly the P47s.

The real allied counterattack will be an armored push. I think Jeff made a few mistakes in his operation that I intend to try and take advantage of. More on this in 2-3 days then the Armored division have detrained.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Invasion West Coast! (6/17/2016 8:37:21 AM)

Holy carruthers that's going to be tough to beat, even if you only picked up a paper air force. Kudos to Lowpe for giving this a go and entertaining the peanut gallery. I can see forum comments five years from now: "Remember when Lowpe went all in on a CONUS invasion against Joc?"

One thing that doesn't seem right is those reinforcements (expect Canadian) are perma-restricted. I think you earned the right to land those on Honshu in the future.

Cheers,
CC
