Press Windows key + X.
Click on the System. Click on Advanced system settings on the right hand side.
Click on the button near the bottom labeled Environment Variables.
You may see both TMP and TEMP listed in the section labeled User variables for (account). That's the common location; each different login account is assigned its own temporary location.
In the Variable value Edit box, you may specify the path to the directory that Windows and many other programs will use for temporary files.

Edge doesn't use the TMP and TEMP folders.

zakblood -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/5/2015 4:25:30 PM)

have you tried ccleaner? it cleans all edge folders for you then, if it can't move it, no idea then :(

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/5/2015 4:38:02 PM)

I don't want to clean the cache (in fact Edge does have an option to clean browsing data). I want to change the location of where it's stored. In IE it's so simple...

zakblood -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/5/2015 4:54:58 PM)

well that's the only info i could find searching for it, everywhere else says it can't be done :(

rhondabrwn -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/6/2015 12:24:25 AM)

[:@][:@]Spent all day yesterday downloading and installing. Installation ran for about 4 hours... ridiculously slow. Finally completed and I could see why... no internet connection, wouldn't even recognize my graphics card (using some Microsoft Basic controller with 1024 x 768 resolution), Wouldn't recognize my Canon MX922 printer. Not a driver issue... Device Manager doesn't see these.

Not sure why it won't connect to my satellite modem, tried everything. Right now I'm only on by tethering my cell phone.

Using Edge browser because Firefox, Opera, and Chrome all crash and refuse to load!

Can't find Window's Office 97 at all, but clicking on an old Excel or Word document somehow loads in "Compatibility Mode". I'll have to go find an old PowerPoint and Access doc to load those. I did set up a taskbar icon so I can start them. Is this some kind of Microsoft forcing me to buy a new copy of "Office" or use their cloud product? I don't use the "cloud" because of my data cap... cloud backup and Steam apps that I can download to any device as needed is totally useless to me.

Very frustrated and pissed off at the moment. I ran the preinstall diagnostic that said everything was fine, no problems with Win 10.. and now look!

Going to swap out the graphics card for something newer from a different PC and try that. Games unplayable with the screen resolution forced the way it is.

Haven't tried doing a reinstall of the Canon printer yet. Also haven't tried doing a reinstallation of Windows Office 97 to see if that shows up in the apps listing then.

Argh... done venting for now. [:@]

Zap -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/6/2015 7:54:14 AM)

Sorry to hear about your frustrations, I have office 2003 that loaded with the update. But it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Yes, they only work in compatibility mode. I was able to create shortcuts for WORD, POWERPOINT,EXCEL, on my desktop. OUTLOOK, however I was only able to put on a task bar below.

JamesM -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/6/2015 9:16:18 AM)

The first thing I noticed when I installed Win10 was the need to upgrade my graphics drivers to get a full screen image.

I don't care for Edge (went back to Chrome), and my Microsoft Money stopped working! Other than that, I like it...

If you search for Money's error message, you can come up with a simple fix. It involves going into the registry and tweaking a numeric value. Money started right up for me after that.

I was up and running after 45 minutes or so. Everything runs fine. I upgraded my graphics driver to a 10 compatible one last week.

Here's the Money fix:

Update (and kind of a retraction)

I got online by tethering my cell phone which allowed my copy to be registered (automatically done it seems).

Then I suddenly realized that my old ATI 4050 graphics card was now recognized and I had all my display options back! Not my doing... it just happened.

Then I suddenly found my Canon MX922 printer was now recognized and working properly! Again, not my doing.

Then this morning I booted up and my Satellite connection is back and running... again, not my doing.

I also noticed changes in the interface this morning. Apparently from that update that was downloading last night when I found "Windows Update" in the new interface. Noticed drivers for my graphics card had also been downloaded.

I would say this is pretty cool if Win 10 is smart enough to continue to work in the background to resolve problems!

Or, if I was really paranoid, this was a direct human tech intervention by Microsoft taking over my computer and working in the background to resolve the problems after they received my blistering feedback on how my installation went [:D] That level of "service" would be both amazing and creepy at the same time!

Anyway, things are much better now [:)]

rhondabrwn -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/7/2015 12:34:18 PM)

Microsoft is really pumping out the updates! I must have installed at least a half dozen in the past 24 hours.

Zap -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/7/2015 1:29:13 PM)

So far only one update for me. Am I missing something or does that have something to do with your specific computer needs?

Toby42 -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/7/2015 2:29:15 PM)

I've only had one upgrade?

Tac2i -> RE: Win 10 free upgrade (8/7/2015 4:19:27 PM)

Not unusual in the least. Software these days is continuously being updated. I'm thankful that it is that way. Bug fixes and enhancements on a regular basis is good. So far I'm finding Windows 10 to be the best Windows OS yet.

From what I've read, folks are getting different updates depending on their specific installation. As reported, there was one big update that everyone should have gotten. I'm including computer specific things like new drivers for my graphics card that were automatically queued up and installed.

One of the reasons why I upgraded so quickly was my continuing frustration with updates in Windows 7. Multiple different errors with multiple fixes that mostly didn't work. I could run Reimage (which took hours and a lot of download capacity) and that would get everything working again, until a week later I would start getting errors again. More than half of all updates wouldn't install. I just decided a Windows 10 upgrade might produce a permanent solution. So far, I've had a couple of failed updates, but they always installed OK on the 2nd go round. Would have liked to do a clean install, but reinstallation of my games, including redownloading from Steam would have taken months.

Change of topic... is it possible to download a Steam game and save an installation file to DVD in case I need to reinstall? With a 10 Gig datacap and plenty of games exceeding that monthly quota (Still waiting to install Shogun 2 at 15 gigs, for example... and still trying to get Homeworld Remastered working (2 gigs still to go). The idea of having to redownload everything in the event of a complete rebuild is daunting.

Of course, I'm stupid to have all these games installed and rarely play any of them. I'm the ultimate dumb collector [:D]

Has anyone tried this OS yet? I heard its superior to Windows.

Guys, let's try and keep this thread OT on Win10 for people who might have questions, rather than another skirmish in the OS wars.

Cheers

pretty sure you can do this - i think you just need to copy the "common" folder with all the games in (or maybe the entire "steamapps" folder)

a better/easier solution might be to use steams own "move game" facility to transfer games to an external hard drive or USB stick

I have avoided WIN 10 as I see no need for now to jump into the cult of the new.

But don't you love the challenge of rearranging everything to work with a new O/S?

Actually, I'm getting a bit old for that myself... however... I bit the bullet and launched into Win 10. My biggest reason was the persistent problems I kept having with Windows Update on my Win 7 installation. Felt like a fresh start was in order...

However, my biggest peeve so far is something I haven't seen reported in reviews. The new Start menu to display "All Apps"... doesn't. I've already commented that my installation of MS Office '97 wasn't displayed. The only one of my John Tiller HPS games to display was "Midway"... NONE of the others (and I have many) are accessible via the Start menu. AGEOD games are scattered about under their indivdiual titles (but do display), none of my Steam games are displayed and actually neither is the basic Steam App! Microsoft Games displays only a "Safe Start" icon that looks like it might be for FS 2004 and nothing else. No links to launch Flight Simulator X or 2004. I could go on and on... it's a weird mix showing links to PDF files and game manuals ad nauseum without ever displaying a game start icon. Paradox Interactive shows Chrome web links to Europa Universalis III on the web, a link to Uninstall Cross of Iron, a link to the Paradox web site, and a link to Gamer's Gate. Not a single game link. Totally useless.

I almost get this feeling that someone created a half assed system just so they could tell everyone "the Start Menu is back" when they really want you to create live tiles for each application like in Windows 8.

Now, the good news is that I've always created shortcuts in a desktop "Games Folder" and that came through the upgrade intact so I can get to my games that way. If I hadn't had that set up... wow what a mess I'd have had. I suspect I will just bypass the whole Start Menu / tile system and pretend I'm running Windows 3.1 and set up my own desktop folders for all my apps. I've always liked that better anyway! For me Win 3.1 was the most stable OS of them all. I ran my computer for months without needing to reboot. Who can say that about the later O/S versions, eh?

So Windows 10 is working for me and the Windows Update problems have gone away, and all my apps seem to work (once I find a way to start them). No serious crashes other than one desktop refresh problem after unpinning Chrome from the Taskbar menu. I have to run it from a desktop shortcut to get it to start up. The "pinned" taskbar icon doesn't work. Firefox continues to crash immediately upon startup (I only know because a Firefox "error message" pops up to tell me it has crashed). Edge, however, just pops up instantly... I smell an MS plot to discourage competing browsers. Opera won't run but I haven't downloaded a current update yet (not that this worked with Firefox, but it did with Chrome).

I'm sure this will all sort out eventually, but this will be the LAST upgrade I ever do till I die LOL

Edit: and I do LOVE the new Task Manager app... finally a really good network meter included so I can monitor my download speeds accurately. More information included everywhere.

Have you tried downloading a transaction file from your bank into MS Money? My Money Plus install starts fine but can't import a file without it crashing??? I have read of a replacement DLL file but not sure about trying a hacked file....
