Hello All.

School is out for the summer so the Cochran Clan is watching movies periodically. Thought it might be fun to get some people's perspectives. We've watched two John Wayne Classics in War Wagon and Flying Leathernecks.

Would like to ask what people enjoy watching of the older films? John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, others? Toss in your favorite Wayne Film. Favorite War Film. Favorite Sci Fi/Fantasy Film.

What say you august members of the Forum?

Both Eastwood and Wayne are top notch but I prefer The Duke over Clint.

A favorite of mine is "In Harm's Way".
If you're not familiar with it its setting is in the Pacific in the early part of WW 2.

To many to pick from but here are some
John Wayne and Client Eastwood, can't go wrong with either, both very different types of "cowboys" but icons the same

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance staring Wyane, some other guys named Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin and Woody Strode also try acting in it [;)]; excellent movie one of my fav Wayne movies

The Searchers & The Shootist starting Wayne,

The Final Countdown staring Kirk Douglas. If you enjoy history and science fiction this is one for you Alternate History movie, Douglas commands a 1980's Carrier that goes back in time on eve of Pearl Harbor. I like the acting and story, they act and ask questions like people and Military Officers would, "what do they do?" stop Pearl Harbor, wait then fight, do nothing, alter or not alter history?

Some amazing foreign war films which mostly get ignored.

I was totally blown away by the German film "I was nineteen." about a young German expat returning to Germany as a Russian officer as the war closes. Great movie and all the equipment is original. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061802/

"The Beast" about a lost Russian tank takes place during the Russian occupation of Afganistan. It puts the rather crappy "Fury" to shame. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_beast_1988/

"No Man's Land" Takes place during the Bosnian/Serbian conflict. Intense and well crafted. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_beast_1988/

And an overlooked American gem. "Three Kings" takes place in Desert Storm times. One of my favorites. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120188/

I am taking you out of the "box" here but these are all great films and merit watching.

Abbott and Costello!

Watch this gem: Little Giant; Costello is a naive country boy, Abbott plays 3 roles. Not your normal A&C movie.

Very touching. Good movie.

Great actors? There's a thought. Wow - so many.

As a kid growing up I think James Stewart and Cary Grant were incredibly watchable actors.

Who else? Anthony Hopkins, Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Denzil Washington, Ralph Fiennes, Kevin Spacey.... so many quality actors.

But favourite actors of modern times? I would go with two:

Best all rounder, comedy and straight roles - Tom Hanks

Most underrated actor - possibly ever - Robert Downey Jr. His performance in Chaplin was incredible.




EDIT: Sorry I forgot Ben Affleck - he's my number 1 obviously. He was just great in that Pearl Harbor film. Anyone seen it?

I watched it over Memorial Day Weekend with my 17 year old daughter. Even she liked it.

Beneath Hill 60 (WWI near Ypres) - unusual since it's about the 1st Australian Tunneling Company: the monument to those soldiers near Hill 60 has a couple of bullet holes in it from the nearby battle in 1940.

Another sort of war movie: "The Wipers Iimes" (BBC production for Region 2 but available from PBS in Region One format). The reprints of the "paper" are cool too.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. My little warspites were playing at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and we took some time out to see some of the memorials and cemeteries.

Best John Wayne movies.....Big Jake and Rio Bravo.
Best historical movie......Gettysburg. Honorable mention for A Bridge Too Far.
Best scene in a war movie.......The dining room scene in Where Eagles Dare.
Best Clint Eastwood movie......Kelly's Heroes.
Just for fun war movie.......Force 10 from Navarone.
Just for fun Western.......Catlow.
Others that need to be mentioned......The Lost Battalion; When Trumpets Fade; Tora Tora Tora.

Nobody ever mentions this movie: Tobruk with Rock Hudson and Nigel Green and George Peppard.

I haven't seen it since I was a kid, but I enjoyed it then. I don't want to watch it again, since I have fond memories of it and don't want to be disappointed.[:)]

We just pulled out 'Bridge Too Far' to watch. My eldest watches the planning phase and looked at me (11 years-old) saying, "Dad--How could they be so STUPID?!! Those ARE tanks in the picture. Even I can SEE that!"

Good kid.

How about The Longest Day? That is a fine film.

I used to love Abbott and Costello films as a kid. But funnier than Laurel and Hardy? And you are forgetting the funniest double act in film history - Affleck and Damon....

Lawrence Of Arabia; Das Boot; Stalingrad (same producers as Das Boot - the end sequence and music really get to me!); Downfall; Zulu; Ice Cold In Alex; Blue Max; Letters from Iwo Jima; Where Eagles Dare; Thin Red Line; Battle Of Britain (watched it just the other day).

Sci-fi:-
Alien; Aliens; Predator; Pitch Black.

Scary stuff:-
Silence Of the Lambs; 28 Days Later; 28 Weeks Later; Wolf Creek; Wolf Creek 2.

Other films I'd highly recommend:-
Forrest Gump; The Green Mile; The Book of Eli; The Reader; School for Scoundrels (original B&W not that crap recent remake!!); The Holiday; Centurion (Roman Britain with Michael Fassbender, Olga Kuryenko); Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2; classics like Ben Hur, Cleopatra; Dr Zhivago.
