Things are looking a little grim for the Germans in the north part of the front. We just routed pretty much an entire army and are poised for more.

The US 15th Army, 1st Allied Abn Army, and the British 2d Army further decimate German forces in the north, with 3 armored divisions from the US 15th Army now in the German's rear area and heavy pressure coming from the front pushing their way into the industrial heartland of Germany. The XVIII Abn Corp of the 1st Abn Army pushes northeast along the apparently lightly held coast. Canadians are pushing hard as usual on the southern edge of the mass of routed Germans. If the snow would let up, that northern mass of German units would not last long. Keeping many of them routed though prevents them from escaping. Further south a lot of reorganization took place, with Patton's 3rd Army and the newly formed 9th Army sorting themselves out. The major push is in the north with Patton supporting pushing northeast from the center of the Allied line. No picture of Italy this time. Minor actions. Not a lot of progress. Forgot to check the Russians progress but I'm feeling the end is near. My invasion of Holland in large strength has paid great dividends putting a lot of pressure on the German front line. Very happy with how that turned out, considering there hasn't been a break in the winter weather since the invasion. Victory point wise it may still turn out a draw, but I feel like I was able to execute a strategy I wanted and have it pay off. The next few turns should see some more major gains. Montgomery's Army Group is very strong, and should be able to cause increasingly more damage. My entire airborne force (1st Allied Abn Army) was part of the invasion or reinforcements. Six airborne divisions + a brigade, an air landing division, divided into one British Corps and one American Corps. In all I lost 2 regiments of the 101st in the invasion but they have since rejoined. They've proved very important. (I admit to being very biased, but that is a lot of extra strength). What does the OoB look like? Are his units hollow, or is it morale in the dumpster that is leading to so many routed units?

From my view I'm guessing a lot of hollow units. Most units I go up against are 1 or 2 defensive strength. Occasionally there is a strongpoint of 5->15 or so, but they are few and far between. Units in Italy are stronger overall, probably half the defensive line having some significant defensive strength. Perhaps my ground attack bombing has prevented resupply and replacements to an extent. I pretty much have the whole front under continuous air attack and have for a while. It's mainly been the winter weather that has prevented my from running straight through the line. Can't make quick progress with turn after turn of snow. It's March 12 now though and just raining, so things should improve that way.

Pushing forward into northern Germany. We've made such progress that supplies are having trouble and rr repair is lagging. (Scott will I know have such sympathy for these problems :-) ) I've brought all my Abn forces to Germany. That provides a whole additional army on top of the "normal" armies. The British 2d army is poised to push into the middle. They are the most rested and best strength. The Russians are still a ways from Berlin (about 8 hexes or so). Bremen and Hanover fall to the US 15th Army. Airborne and armored forces are knocking on the gates of Hamburg as the 1st Allied Airborne Army and US 15th US Army push ahead across northern Germany. Leading 15th Army units are now only slightly farther from Berlin than Russians on the east side. Other units of the 15th Army, US and French, along with British 2d Army forces push east from the Ruhr valley and at least partially reduce that large pocket of German forces east of the Ruhr. There appears to be no organized defense any more north of a few hexes south of Hanover. Armor from Patton's 3rd Army push forward to the north of Frankfurt. This has to end soon, I would think. If I might inquire, what is the leading Fifteenth Army armored division? Hopefully that armored division reaches Berlin before the Soviets. [:D]

16th Armored Division is the one leading the way to Berlin. Looking at the Soviet progress it looks like the race is on for Berlin. The 82d Airborne takes Hamburg. The 101st Airborne along with the 13th and 17th Airborne take Wilhelmshaven. I think we've somewhat outrun the fuel supplies because I'm having a hard time keeping up with the retreating Germans and the center of the front. Rail repair is trying frantically to keep up. With the '45 city point divisor seems like you have more to lose down there (in US and Other Loss VPs) than gain by anymore fighting at this stage. Surprised he hasn't railed more out of there to speed bump the race to Berlin.

Yes, I've just been poking at the ends of the line each turn. Leaving the middle alone where they have better positions in the mountains, hoping to make some gains without horrendous casualties.

What do you do with TFs as this stage of the game? They seem like they'd make great coastal can openers...

Exactly as you say. I used them working my way up the French and now German coast. Had 3 of them offshore while the paratroopers attacked Wilhelmshaven. They can't quite be seen - just off the left of the Western Front picture, but there are 4 TF at the Dutch ports for just that type of use. 2 in England. Didn't need all of them for the Dutch invasion so I was able to use a couple along the Le Havre and north portion of the French coast (I had brought all but one from the Med to England. Now a couple have returned to the Med as they aren't needed in the north anymore). Not shown in the pics are US 9th Army and French units placing a siege on Marseilles. A couple of TF there are helping out, based in the Med. Marseilles is quite a strong point but is weakening. Each enemy port has receive attention from TF as I attacked them from land, including earlier the French coastal ports like La Rochelle. Seems to work a treat.

April 10, 1945, turn 46 Hamburg fall to the US Airborne forces, and the British 1st Abn captures the depot at Kiel, the holdouts in Cologne surrender to the US 11th Armored Div., the US 13th Armored takes Magdeburg and the 8th and 16th Armored Divisions race toward Berlin, stopping at Brandenburg. The US forces of the 15th Army are now noticeably closer to Berlin than the Russians are on the eastern side. However, there are a number of German units grouped around Berlin. Some are routed and recovering there, so it's hard to get a feel for how well defended it is. Farther south, 3rd Army pushes toward Frankfurt and the US 1st Army works its way along the Swiss border east of Frieburg. 9th Army holds the center and makes modest gains. In Italy a combined push by the US 2d Corp, British 8th Army units and Poles, push hard into the middle of the German line, taking few casualties as German units melt away. Turn 48, April 24th Armored divisions from the US VIII and XXI Corps arrive in the outskirts of Berlin and meet heavy resistance. They are joined by a British Airlanding Division, and the British 6th Airborne Division. The Russians are still to the east of Berlin quite a ways. The US VIII and XXI Corps establish a large penetration all the way to Berlin, and seal off most remaining German units south of the bend of the Elbe. In the north the British 1st Airborne and the US XVIII Abn Corps clear the north German plains from Hamburg to Rostock. South of the bulge the Canadian Army, the II FF Corps and the British VIII Corps shatter much of the German units on a line from Magdeburg to Erfurt and the Canadian armor reaches Halle. The US 1st Army near the Swiss border drives forward toward Munich. Toulon is surrounded. In Italy the US VI Corp reinforced by a Polish armored brigade breaks through the western portion of the German line. The goal ahead. Take Berlin!!
