hey there, my brave but vastly outnumbered Japanese garrison on Guam continues to bombard USMC landings in a PBEM game, May, 1944. At first it wasn't a problem when the Allied forces were about equal to mine. Now the AV ratio is about 2100 Allied to 500 IJ, and I'm taking heavy losses though i'm doing the bombarding. The combat report below has happened with similar results two turns in a row as the Americans land more troop reinforcements. I have carefully set all my troops to "Defend" each turn (even though it defaults to Bombard on the landings). But even what seems to be a small landing is causing the japanese more casualties than a deliberate attack practically! I have to reset my troops to "Defend" from "Bombard" after each landing. Is there a way to stop this defaulting to Bombard? How can i save my guys from this automatic nightmare? Please help :) Thanks! (And yes, virtually the entire USMC and several army divisions are on Guam. Its been a four month epic battle with lots of ships sunk around the island too). I believe it's an automatic part of the code to bombard an opposed landing as long as possible. The flip side of the lander having to undergo shock attack after shock attack even once a beachhead is established.

I like to call these dumbards, not bombards. It's not in your interests, but you can't stop them. You can try, by putting units in Reserve mode, but I'm not sure that works. Besides that, you're then vulnerable to the shock attack as those units you put in reserve would fight in reserve mode... nasty risk.

Dumbards! I like that :). Thanks for the responses. I was afraid this would be the answer. And yes, I am glad its been a four month meat grinder on Guam. 7+ Allied divisions tied up there! 2-3 of them have been gutted over the campaign. Not to mention a few CVE's and transports sunk supporting the landings. I think my opponent is not looking forward to the next phase of landings, wherever they may be.
