Feb 26, 1942

San Fernando falls, a division starts landing today. Strength: 1 ENG, 2 AT, 1 ID. I will throw in dribs and drabs and build it up, start taking the rest of northern Luzon if no action from Jocke. And, Yes I did have LRCAP up for them, and patrolling destroyers in case a few PT boats came my way.

There is troop movement from Manila north, so we shall see. This is simply mainly a diversion, an attempt to let Jocke think I am busy cleaning up the perimeter and backfield. Took a few a other bases, Tagula (SE of Milne Bay, and he has gotten 10/10 dl on it).

The Alaska/Canada invasions are steaming away - undetected.

Jocke has been sending a few Dutch bombers my way around Java, and I mostly shoot them down. There are about 50 fighters and 50 bombers of the Dutch left on Java.

I'd scoop up as many minor bases as you can if diversion is your goal. Maybe even more in SOPAC - might be a little late at this point to go for Noumea with a token force (entirely possible to have it reinforced by February), but maybe? It's an important base and if he sees you there he might not think about CONUS. They're far apart.

In future games as Japan, I think I'll be looking at Noumea before February. Before January 15, if possible. Snatching it up before reinforcements arrive is key. There's just way too much to do in the first months.

ny59giants -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/24/2015 4:42:44 PM)

End of Feb in DBB based mods sees 2 of 3 Rgt from Americal ID arrive at Melbourne along with a few AEB that are all attached SoPac HQ so they just need transports to be moved over to New Calendonia. The other Rgt is in USA, but needs PPs and transports to join her sisters and be recombined. So, plan accordingly. [:-]

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/24/2015 6:38:40 PM)

I will try to do a flurry of small island takeovers in the PI this day, good advice I think Lok.[&o] Probably won't mean much, but you never know.

Will spend extra time on the turn, since I rushed the last two a little.

There are now 3 units at Chikiang....so never had a chance to get the paratroopers there, but there is a unit standing ready for opportunity at Canton, more going to Alaska, and another at Singers enroute to Magwe.

Here is China....I will have assembled 5 Tank units for the drive on Ankang, along with 3 artillery currently there. Will simply cycle in infantry divisions and grind my way north. I am bombing fairly heavily his position on the road. I have seen 50 fighters in China at Chungking....

Adjacent I have troops moving into the deep jungle, but I have no intention of going there. Jocke has several units adjacent and might actually see a movement arrow. Let him think I am going offroad...

At Wuchow, almost 1000 AV is moving on the town, which Jocke seems to have left not much defending. I want the industry there, and once I get Wuchow, I will wait about 2 weeks for all the other forces to form up for the drive north from there. Getting air support and planes ready for both movements.

Sonia, Ann, Mary, Lillies go to Luzon, China. Sallies go to Alaska. In Java, I am just defending and will move to take his bases without a lot of air action.

Shame about Chihkiang, but keep your eyes on all of the bases. Anything you can snatch up, even if you can't hold it, you should do. It makes him move units at the very least, potentially abandoning forts in the field as well as keeping them from being in rest mode where they could be recovering morale and disablements at a faster pace. Although you should want him to be recovering from the starting disablements, to some degree - it makes the units eat more supply.

Oscars, Oscars, and more Oscars are the answer here. You can sweep almost anywhere from Hankow and Wuchang. Truly anywhere once you have Changsha.

However, I think this is a misallocation of your tank units. Send them south to the grey roads. Ankang isn't important right now. I'd pull back some of your other units too. Maybe it stalls you out, but that's OK because as stated you don't need to be advancing here. The important things are in the south! Compounding this importance, they're also much harder for him to defend. Also, who knows - maybe if you seem to stall out up here he'll be lulled into feeling secure-ish in China.

Let him think that to....accomplish what? Maybe I don't see which hex you're referring to, exactly. Also, just to be pedantic... it's woods rough, not jungle rough [;)]. Don't have to deal with malaria here.

Why wait? 2 weeks is a long time and costs you some initiative. At the very least you should invest Kweilin and/or Liuchow and begin burning his supplies via bombardment. He has no guns to speak of to hurt your guys, so you've got nothing to lose except one thing: it might cost you in that he might shift some defense this way, but that's OK too - you can just crush more troops for more VPs.

Just make sure to use "follow" for your troops if he is bombing. You don't want units arriving piecemeal to fight his large stacks, which I assume to be present at Soerabaja at least.

Speaking of the Sonia... you aren't stuck with her for the whole war, are you? [X(]

Lok,

Lets see. I have no intention of fighting off road, but he has a lot of troops off road now and I want to keep them there. So, if he thinks I am willing to go off road, the longer it is before he moves back to the roads.

Stuck with Sonia and b for the whole war. I did not count squadrons but know it is a fair amount. Some of the Sonia b upgrade to Oscars though.[:)]

I will have enough armor pushing up from the south; having armor also push to Ankang will get him to move his artillery to that area I think or keep it there.

I wouldn't bother worrying about the Chinese "artillery" [:)]. I know they have more guns in DBB than they do in stock, but still... guns take supply. He won't have any.

Some general plane notes:

Got my first repaired r&d factory: Lilly IIa. Rufes should start coming on stream shortly too.

I switched a Betty E facility over to Frank A. In thinking about it a little more, I probably should have put it over to Oscar.

Off the top of my head I have the following r&d for fighters: Oscar IIa 3; Oscar IIb 1; Tojo IIa 3; Tony 61A 2; Tony 61d 1; Nick A 3([X(]); Frank A 4; Frank B 1; Frank R 1; Ki94 3; Karyu 1; Randy 102a 1; Ki100-I 1; 102 b 1; Ki119 1.

Navy: Rufe 4; AGM3 2; A6M3a 2; A7M2 3; A7M2-J 3; J2M2 2; N1K1-J 2.

So, I have to ask this ....

Have you already triggered the US reinforcements for invading NA or not yet?

If so, do they not include a ton of fighters in this scenario?

I am going to hit Canada and Alaska first, and if things go well, hit the west coast in December of 1942. I believe there are ton of air reinforcements, and at least four armored divisions, although most are in Salt Lake I believe. Of course, we are a long way from there yet.

PaxMondo -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/25/2015 3:45:06 AM)

They trigger when you touch Victoria or anyplace south of that line.
EDIT: I don't have scen 30 loaded on this machine so I can't check the USA reinformcement list. LCU's are a non-issue for me. Its the aircraft that can change the game. Don't know if any AC are released in your game.

The guns are still going to be in under-supplied and inexperienced units. It'll be tougher than stock, but not that much...

I could see a use for the northern armor to fight west from Ichang.

Right. If you get out quickly enough and properly, you don't need to worry about the LCUs.

The manual says the west coast of North America south of Vancouver.[&:]

Victoria is not on the coast of North America. It is on an island. It has a Canadian country code. Invading there will not trigger Counter Invasion Forces.

I hope.[X(] On page two I presented what I expect are the Counter Invasion Forces which I suspect I will trigger in Dec of 1942.

A little single engine goodness in China. The Ida Squadron is slated for a Lilly Ib upgrade shortly, but there was adequate Oscar sweeps and cover to send the guys out for a little on the job training.

Bullwinkle58's thread covers everything you need to know about the WC trigger line. Victoria and Vancouver do not trigger the emergency reinforcements, only US teritory does.

Btw, it looks like Victoria is a strait, which means a landing there would be subject to extra damage from the minefield and the CD guns. My own plan was to land at Coal Harbor and then walk all the way to Victoria. Also, please note there is no house rule preventing you from landing at the non-base hex NW of Victoria.

PaxMondo -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/25/2015 1:55:12 PM)

Mmmmm, in my recent game Victoria landings triggered a ton of reinforcements ... I rue the action greatly. I assume those reinforcements were the NA reinforcements. Maybe not. Will watch with interest here.

Moose's thread will give you the useful details, but here is an illustration. Emergency reinforcements has to do with hex rows (and maybe columns too or maybe only in some cases), plus country codes (maybe more than one code). Use the '4' hotkey to see the country code of a piece of land. Here is a pic from a from a Babes 28-C game showing country codes in that area.

Yep. Victoria will trigger the CONUS emergency package.

Just walking 1 hex south of Coal Harbour on that island will do so. So far as I know, it's an LCU over the line trigger, not a base occupation trigger.

No, it's not base occupation. But country code matters in addition to the hex. If you change a hex that will trigger to, say, Alaska's code then that hex would not trigger it.

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/25/2015 5:28:35 PM)

Here is a note from Michaelm about the air reinforcements which is interesting; in truth aren't new units, but accelerated from the reinforcement que....so they are early air units that the Allies would eventually get anyhow.

"However, any withdraw/disband date is still in effect for these units."

My only first hand experience here is against the AI. I had LCUs in Australia and was advancing from outside of Brisbane westward towards Port Augusta. One of my tank LCUs decided to veer 1 hex south due to a better movement path, and it triggered the Australian emergency reinforcement package.

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/25/2015 8:51:55 PM)

Turn is away....

The country code sure doesn't apply to the line of death in Oz; but it does apply to the Japanese counter invasion forces as the Kuriles and Japan are different codes. I feel relatively confident that US is a country code too; I seem to recall a developer chiming in on it somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it. I wonder if I should read thru the upgrade changes, again.?

Putting together an invasion of southern India shortly, cleaning up in the SRA, moving on Luzon, China, and contemplating northern Oz. Lots of pans on the fire.[:)]

Certainly: that was at or below the hex line in question, and the same country code in question.

One example is Socotra. It never used to trigger Indian invasion emergency reinforcements because it is a different country code than the Indian mainland. They made a change in a patch to add that country code so that now it does trigger them.

As an interim measure (prior to that patch), changing the country code of the Socotra hex to the Indian mainland country code also made it trigger (tested that myself). So as far as I can tell, in some places it is country code alone, while in other places it is hex rows (or columns) plus a specific country code (or one of a list of country codes).

Bullwinkle58 -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/25/2015 9:47:16 PM)

I'm not going to say whether I think a landing at Victoria is a smart move or not. But as to the LOD/country code issue the country code in Canada does not control. Vancouver is y=49. Landing two hexes southeast of Coal Harbor at 206,50 will trigger the ER package for the USA. It's substantial. I just re-tested this to be sure.

Re harbor guns and the strait rules, in my test I only tested sailing past Victoria to land at Vancouver. I never tested landing head on into Victoria. The results might be similar, or might not. Just wanted to be clear.

I'm watching both sides. Interesting game.

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/26/2015 2:29:36 AM)

Pax's info on Victoria triggering the counter invasion forces is troubling. I just finished searching the read me patch notes, and did not find anything. Note that I did keyword searches as I am far to lazy to read the whole thing. But I searched on lots of terms...

I have noticed that CD guns are by far and away the most dangerous when passing thru in a strait...but I had planned on really pounding the defenders before landing. Now with the thought Victoria triggers the emergency reinforcements I might adjust my plans.

I have a few days yet to adjust and finalize my thinking.[:)]

That's consistent with what I saw. Coal Harbor was fine. Victoria was one step too far.[;)]

HansBolter -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/26/2015 11:19:00 AM)

Coal Harbor is definitely not a trigger.

The AI invades in on Dec 7 in AndyMacs Iron Man Nasty and no reinforcements are triggered.

Have never seen an invasion of Victoria.

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/26/2015 5:42:51 PM)

Invasion forces still headed for Victoria, and company. Nothing spotted.

Took Trinkat, Great Nicobar, flushed an AMC ?. Will try to sink it...I doubt it is an AMC as a cruiser force didn't react with plenty of op points left.

Took another base in northern Luzon (only two left to grab), 6th Guards landed without a hitch. Ida's doing good work here hitting runways, supply depots. Wouldn't it be a hoot if a 30kg hand grenade destroyed as many supply points as a 250kg heavy.

Took Wuchow in southern China without a fight. Sonia there inflicted 300 losses on the retreating Chinese.

In SRA I took Babar, landed at Koepang. Ships and forces loading for Eastern India, ran into the 1st Burma in northern Burma.

I now have 150 r&d points going after the A6M5, but they are spread across three factories: 60, 60 & 30. A size 8 factory is staying with the Rufe.
