Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/26/2015 9:25:58 PM)

I am in the process of checking to see if a victoria landing will trigger the counter invasion forces....

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/26/2015 11:00:06 PM)

and as expected, thanks to Pax, invading Victoria does trigger the counter invasion forces.

Ugh![:(]

Change of plans. Interesting to note that most of the Yank forces are white (perm restricted) but a nasty Canadian Tank unit is not...

PaxMondo -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/27/2015 12:14:21 AM)

That's what us in the peanut gallery are here for. [:D]

Darn, I wanted to see what Jocke would do with an extra 500 aircraft. [:D]

I also run a check and found the same. Well, that seals the deal. You 'll have to make do with Coal Harbor and Aliford Bay. I hope you brought enough engineers! [:'(]

March 1, 1942

Koepang falls (Timor).

Alaska/Canada invasion forces spot a lone Yankee sub 7 hexes due east. Nothing is detected.

Moving forward on all fronts.[:)]

Size 30 versus size 60 plane r&d:

Olorin created many size 60 r&d facilities. They do seem to repair just as quickly (on a relative percentage basis) as a size 30 facility. I have three Ki94 factories and they are already at 5,4,4 repaired out of 60.

Now that I have two fully repaired and researching, I will monitor to see if they repair more than 1 point per day (or more than 2 points with engine bonus).

I recall reading somewhere that the possibility exists for a factory to repair more than 1 point a day if greater than size 30, but it was not a certainty.

I do see the value of creating size 60 factories of certain planes, like George, Jack, etc as it will kick start production from the get go.

Time will tell if Olorin is correct again![&o]

I think IF I would have known this, I would have invaded southern California with the aim of destroying the factories there and leaving. I believe I could have hit it with 6 divisions, plus tanks and artillery. The key would have been cutting the rails at Las Vegas & the western rails within 2 days of the landing. Very difficult to do, but it would be wildly entertaining.

Don't lose hope![:D] I still can try for a much larger invasion in Dec of 1942...and the Allies might in fact be weaker then, having shipped troops to India and Australia.

I was filled with morbid curiosity as well, as to whether Lowpe was trying to turn this into a repeat of his other game [:D].

I think an invasion of Canada is powerful, I just wouldn't want to trigger the reinforcements in early 1942.

Lowpe -> RE: A Wolf in the Sheep Fold: Scen 30 pickup (Lowpe (J) vs Jocke(A) (8/28/2015 2:49:52 PM)

Another day.

Japan takes two more Islands in the Andamans, Ndeni south of the Lower Solomons; All of northern Luzon is Japanese.

A good attack on the Ankang road, should punch thru in two days.

Canadian invasion is rapidly approaching their targets, Iboats are doing some recon. An invasion fleet is spotted south of Kodiak, perhaps something will come out and play and run right into the KB which is south west of Seattle steaming north.

Shipping all oil to Hong Kong from the SRA...

Invasion of lower India is away...

Spotted off Victoria Island...6 Catalinas shot down. Their running scared in Pacific North West...I hope.

A screen of American subs are protecting the coast.

Flying Tigers show up in China...down several Nates fly LRCAP. Oscars only now reaching the theatre, will start sweeping today.

Nick Sentai fully repaired, will be enroute to Canada shortly. I wish I had a few AKVs.

Lowpe -> Oh, Canada! (8/28/2015 8:49:01 PM)

Dateline March 5, 1942:

Canadian soil looms large....weather, thunderstorms.

Invasion on in Canada!

Other forces headed for Valdez, Whittier, Bella Bella. It's a donnybrook![sm=00000106.gif]

Lowpe -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 2:27:21 AM)

Every couple of days I look at my plane builds, I really want to shift my Nate factories, but nothing to move them into yet...so they continue to crank the little guys out since the engines are free.

My first new fighters will be the A6M3 and Tojo IIa in June (earlier if the research works).

Only three decent size squadrons go Tojo IIa I believe, and the A6M3 isn't much of an improvement of the A6M2. Only two squadrons go to the A6M3 before moving onto the A6M5.

PDU off joys!

PaxMondo -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 3:31:53 AM)

Oscar. You are PDU OFF, for IJA you build Oscar. Don't wait. Build Oscar. Nate is just putting pilots that you need in more danger than they need to be. Oscar isn't great, but much better than Nate.

Yeah... why even build the Nates? The engines may be free, but the planes aren't and the planes are gonna cost you pilots, too [;)]. And VPs. The only thing Nates can do is kill Chinese biplanes. How many of those are there on the entire map, 30?

Encircled -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 8:00:37 AM)

Stop building Nates!

Oscars with good pilots can hold their own against what he has got at the moment, and as so many squadrons on the Oscar line, its worth the investment

Lowpe -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 12:46:19 PM)

Three for three...cancelled the Nates, and switched to Oscar Ic.

Lowpe -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 12:58:12 PM)

1st Week of March, 1942

The invasion begins, despite the hoard of submarines, the Japanese land in two spots today, and at Valdez Alaska tomorrow.

The Tuna finds a torpedo that works and hits an AK, but she should survive.

The troops are ashore and should easily take the bases tomorrow or the next day. Loss on the landings weren't terrible, about 30 combat squads disabled and 1 LCU VP awarded. This despite having almost 0 prep since they were prepping for Victoria (some of them).

Valdez landing will be followed by a landing at Whittier in Alaska.

What I have observed is that players now reverting to PDU OFF are overthinking RnD. Most of us stopped playing PDU OFF because it became quite simple: RnD Oscar and A6M. That's about it for sure.
For everything else it hardly matters. Why? so few groups upgrade to anything else. Very hard to justify spending 90K supply to build maybe 200 aircraft the entire game and get them a couple months early. At any rate that was the results of most of us. YMMV.
For the rest of the IJA, maybe you can invest in Helen RnD. You have to keep building Sally for almost the entire game.
For the rest of the IJN, you can likely justify Jill/Judy/Grace. That's about it. Everything else, I just let them appear per schedule.

That means my NF are just Oscar/A6M on night CAP. Recon is Babs for most of the game. Helen/Sally or Nettie the whole game. etc.

Don't over think it. Don't waste 1000's of supply on a couple of hundred planes. They won't matter in the end. The supply will.

The biggest difference between PDU OFF and ON is going to be your pilot losses. Plan on 25% more losses. That means your training pools now have to be much deeper than before.

vicberg -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 2:52:26 PM)

I'm playing a PDU off also. Thanks for this.

I will, with much respect, disagree on some points. I think fighter research for Frank is well worth it.

Now Jack and George are fairly restricted in the number of squadrons that upgrade to them - like 1 or 2 thru 43. So they aren't much help. Tony has 3 or 4 that can get to the 61d, but it isn't really good except against bombers.

But Frank A has 7 squadrons available in 1943. Some upgrade straight to it, others thru the early Oscar models (IIa, IIb, IIIa,), and others thru Tojo IIc. Now this is a force worth getting early!

Nick A (and then C): they come early, but there are also 4 squadrons that can be converted in 42 when it can really do some damage. After 42 on rear area anti bomber protection it will be good outside of escort range all the way thru half of 44.

For bombers: I would add the Lilly IIb/IIc line. Quite a few Army squadrons upgrade here, and it is a worthwhile long strike plane thru 43. Getting it a few months early might help against a late Allied push to avoid autovictory, or more likely, just a plane that can hit Fletchers.

Night Fighters: I think it is worthwhile researching the Irving and the Nick. The Allies can really abuse night bombing in PDU off. IMHO.

Of my R&D changes to Olorin's start: I have added Oscar, Frank and Lilly IIb r&d. I have expanded Zero and Oscar production. I have boosted engine production. I probably added some NF research too.

Nothing embraces the suck more than having 200 Allied bombers hitting your runways at night without NF. Perhaps the better AA present in this mod will alleviate that problem to a degree.

vicberg -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 4:13:15 PM)

It isn't that I disagree about allied night bombing, but that there are so few groups that can be NF. And even fewer to the early models. Its all a cost of supply vs are the NF's that much different than Oscar on night mission CAP? YMMV.

My experience is that the Irving-s is far superior to the Oscar on night duty. Much better just to fly Petes on night cap and hope they don't intercept than a daytime fighter at night especially against 4E American beasts.

I do agree that there is a dearth of NF squadrons, but that is also true to a degree in PDU on.

vicberg -> RE: Oh, Canada! (8/29/2015 5:37:43 PM)

Since you are talking planes, the Lilly IIb is showing as a dive bomber but twin engine and looks to be a level bomber? What IS this plane?

Pretty much what I do. Lily dive bomber is worth researching, and you have to research the NF. I like the Tony as anti-bomber as well, even the early ones
