Lobster -> RE: ETA? (1/4/2016 9:53:30 PM)

E.T.A. Endless Tales of Availability [:D]

They ran into some unexpected problems I guess and they don't really want to give a date that might be missed again. Some time next year. Oh wait, it is next year. Some time this year. Rumor says Q1 or Q2.

Meyer1 -> RE: ETA? (1/4/2016 10:53:27 PM)

Weren't they aiming for a Christmas release? Plenty of time... [:D]

I can't say when the release date was but it's obvious that we missed it. I have no idea when TOAW IV will be released but I do know
that there's at least one bug that needs to be found and fixed before the release and Thomas and I are working day and night, literally,
to find this bad boy. We've found two examples of it already, one of them just this morning, so things are looking up. It's up to Ralph
now I guess.

No, Bob said end of October. I'm sure everyone knows that a date from a developer is a shot in the dark.

That is not what I said. I said we had to have the code finished by the end of October if it was to be released by the end of the year, and the code wasn't finished by the end of October.

We still have no new estimate of when it will be released.

Lobster -> RE: ETA? (1/5/2016 2:14:07 PM)

Ah, could not find the post so I just put what my old brain had stored. But hey, I got October right. [;)]

I wouldn't publish a completion estimate the way this thing gets kicked down the road.

Rasputitsa -> RE: ETA? (1/5/2016 6:00:48 PM)

Well it'll get here when it gets here, looking forward to it whenever it is ready.

Lobster -> RE: ETA? (1/6/2016 2:27:23 AM)

Uhm...no matter where you go there you are?

Ostwindflak -> RE: ETA? (1/9/2016 8:41:39 PM)

After all these years of gaming, I still have not played an Art of War game. Are they as good as people proclaim or is it just a core group of die hard fans that keep it afloat?

Toan -> RE: ETA? (1/9/2016 9:29:39 PM)

Please notify me of any reply concerning ETA

fogger -> RE: ETA? (1/10/2016 1:45:38 AM)

Hi Jason,
In all honestly and sincerity I really feel very sorry for you because you have no idea on what you have missed on. I purchased TOAW 1 back in 1998/99 and was hooked. TOAW is not every bodies "cup of tea" but if you like strategy type war games then it is the best. Over the pass 30 years I have owned over 100 war games and I have always come back to TOAW and it is the only game that I play now. I am on the TOAW 4 beta testing team currently playing FITE2, 6kms hexes and you can break down your divisions to battalion and company level. Once all the bugs are ironed out TOAW 4 will be worth every cent that you pay for it. It will be the last war game that I buy unless there is a TOAW 5 down the track. Your only decision is do you purchase TOAW 3 knowing that TOAW 4 is coming out in the near (??) future or do you wait until TOAW 4 is released.

lecrop -> RE: ETA? (5/20/2016 8:00:20 PM)

Bump

Any news?

I was also a first-day buyer of TOAW in 1998.

winkr7 -> RE: ETA? (5/23/2016 1:31:54 AM)

I got the game when it came out, and then the next one 3 months later and then a few more including the delux game of the year version and verion next and next etc etc etc. They released about 5 versions in 18 months

Let's be clear: It was Talonsoft that did that, not Matrix Games.

FF_1079 -> RE: ETA? (5/24/2016 5:09:35 AM)

So, I bought a copy of TOAW III from Matrix many moons ago but no longer have access to it ( no receipts from 10+ years ago ) and now that my kids are finally all in their late teens, I actually have time to play it again. I would prefer to get TOAW IV, but if it won't be released this year - I might as well just buy another copy of Ver. III.

So, back to the OP - do we have an updated eta?

Yes, me too!

fogger -> RE: ETA? (5/24/2016 1:42:58 PM)

Ralph & team are still working on it. There were 9 updates in April and 2 so far in May. There is light at the end of the tunnel and it is not the oncoming train. I know it is hard waiting but hang in there. TOAW 4 is worth the wait. And No I can not answer any questions. Answering questions is above my pay grade.

lecrop -> RE: ETA? (5/24/2016 5:36:07 PM)

Thanks for the effort fogger [:)]

Eager for pbemplusplusing...

fogger -> RE: ETA? (6/6/2016 1:56:15 PM)

Just to let you know that there were 5 updates in May.

Sarcasm will get you nowhere. If you do not want updates just say so and I will stop posting. Because I have signed a NDA I am limited in what I can say.

Me too. +1. But you know..........summer is coming up and then after that
is christmas and I'm not saying anything in particular about anything but if
I was going to try to sell something I'd go for summer break between classes
or maybe christmas, that's always a good time for releases. I have no idea
about much but I know the good times to have a sale during the year. It's
right after the chrismas rush when it's good for used cars. And the dealers
are trying to get last years cars off the lot so they can park the shiny new
year models. Not that you would know but cattle feed has an expiration date
and some unscrupulous dealers will surriptiously slip in an old expired bag
in with a shipment of new ones hoping it won't get caught and nine times
out of ten it isn't. Say the feed dealers.

EDIT: Oh.........and I wanted to say, the exact dates around the christmas rush are
flexible and I guess summer break would be the day after the last day of classes in
May or June, probably May, and the first day of classes in the fall. Sometime
around September. So between May and September would be summer break.
But the christmas rush??? Sometime between just after Halloween and the 24th of
December or so. Your guess is better than mine actually.

FF_1079 -> RE: ETA? (6/9/2016 5:46:02 AM)

I understand the need for an NDA, their purposes and the kinds of things that they cover. I have entered into both NDA's and signed non-competes over the course of my life, so I respect your integrity in not revealing what you have been asked to not reveal.

The real question is to the people developing the game and the issuers of this NDA: Why hide the progress and development of this game ( including the stubborn bugs that are hard to squash ) from the interested group of future purchasers who are hungry to hear about it? I just don't understand the logic of telling your potential customers that they don't need or deserve to hear about the games development. "It'll be ready when it's ready" is not acceptable to the world at large, so I'll never understand how software developers are given this kind of leeway. If a plumber, restaurant owner, auto mechanic, etc. spoke to their customers this way, they would get bashed by horrible word of mouth for being rude and unprofessional. Sure people get a bit annoyed when they are told that something will happen on day x and it happens on day z instead, but if there is communication before that conversation, explaining what is going on and why there are delays, people feel confident that they have made the right choice in spending their money.

I honestly expect someone to reply to this post and accuse me of being impatient and rude for bringing this up, as if a future customer has no right to ask questions. Try selling something for a living and see how far you will go with "It'll be ready when it's ready".

I appreciate that Larry Fulkerson is indirectly trying to hint at the release date, which he and some other testers have been thoughtful enough to do - but I am disappointed that the developer/developers are not doing some basic communication about what the hold ups are and some AAR screen shots. It's a remodel of an existing game, it's not like you are creating Unix from scratch, no one is going to steal your IP.

quote:

I hadn't thought of it as a hint. I thought I was communicating my best guess. I know as much
as you do.

Lobster -> RE: ETA? (6/9/2016 3:02:33 PM)

They have no idea. Seriously. Not a clue. And that isn't something I pulled out of my tailpipe. If Larry were really trying to hint at a date then what he would be saying is they are shooting for summer but Xmas is more realistic.

Don't bother asking for a target date no matter how vague. You are just wasting your time. Looking at the forum and the gaming clubs I'd say it's getting to be too late. No one is playing it anymore. Hopefully when it is completed some real interest will be generated. But it's been 'in development' for several years now. Even for a one man show that's glacial.
