Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #4. Japan. The Marshalls.

USA saber rattling and their build up of the Pacific fleet in Hawaii, is meet with an impressive array of IJN carrier strength moved into the Marshalls.

The USA has a decision to make. Do they keep their two aircraft carriers (the Enterprise and the Lexington) docked in Hawaii in order to increase the chance of successfully declaring war on Japan, which is currently 50%. Or, do they get them out of harms way? My inclination is the latter.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #4. Japan. The Home Islands.

Japan did keep two aircraft carriers and four battleships in reserve in their home islands. Actually, the two aircraft carriers are there because carrier planes had to be rebased and moved around. Anyway, this is a fair reserve that can be used to move against the CW or the USA as necessary.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. CW Combine. RN. East Coast.

The CW takes a combine and uses one of their two naval moves to bring a cruiser escort into the 1 box of the East Coast. Since there's only 1 German u-boat unit in the area and it's disorganized there's no chance for any sub combat this turn (assuming the CW doesn't initiate it and they won't). So, the CW put the cruiser in the 1 box so that it can move to the 0 box at the end of turn. This will give the convoys there some level of ASW, though fairly minimum, at the beginning of next turn.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/7/2016 12:19:44 AM)

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. Cape St. Vincent.

The CW used their second of two naval moves for the combine to move two heavy cruisers into the 1 box of Cape St. Vincent. Again, this will ensure some level of minimum ASW protection at the beginning of next turn. However, unlike the East Coast, the axis did have a chance and tried to initiate combat. Both search rolls failed, so no combat.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. Italian Coast.

Off the Italian coast the RN does successfully initiate combat against the Italians. The RN is able to surprise the Italians and choose to isolate sea boxes 0, 2 and 4. Sea box 1 contained two Italian fighters, which was excluded by the RN.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. Italian Coast. Round 1.

The ensuring naval air combat is one sided with the RN forcing an Italian fighter to abort, sinking an Italian heavy cruiser and forcing an Italian convoy to abort.

Both sides choose to stay. The Italians because they must. Supply to their forces in North Africa, Egypt and the Middle East depend on it.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/7/2016 12:27:37 AM)

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. Italian Coast. Round 2.

Round 2 also goes to the RN who again find and surprise the Italian fleet and air units. The RN forces the Italian NAV to abort and manage to damage and force the lone remaining Italian cruiser left in the sea area. The only unit still enabling supply the Italians in North Africa, Egypt and the Middle East is a single convoy point.

Both sides choose to stay. The Italians draw a sigh of relief as neither side is able to find the other, thus ending this naval battle.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/7/2016 12:30:47 AM)

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. East Med.

In the East Med the RN decides to initiate combat. The Italians fly in two NAV units which make it to the 2 box. The RN is performing very well. They find and surprise the Italians.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RN. East Med. Round 1.

The ensuing naval air battle also is won by the RN, who manage to shown down an Italian NAV air unit and force an Italian battleship and cruiser to abort.

Both sides choose to stay. Again, the Italians because they must to maintain supply to their forces in North Africa, Egypt and the Middle East.

Neither side finds the other so the naval combat ends. The Italians keep supply flowing to the units above.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. Weather.

I forgot to post this at the beginning of the impulse. Weather of this impulse pair.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. RAF Ground Strike. Asmara, Eritrea.

And so do the RAF bombers making the ground strike on the out of supply Italian corps defending Eritrea.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. CW. Land Combat. Asmara, Eritrea.

The land combat to take Eritrea is successfully but does cost the CW a unit on a low roll of 7. The odds for rolling 7 or lower and taking losses for this attack was 21%. So the loss of a unit while not expected wasn't a "rare" result (i.e., it was 1 out of 5).

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. CW. Eritrea. Red Sea.

Not perfect but a good turn for the CW on the sea, in the air and on land.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. USA. Hawaii Archipelago

The USA uses their three naval moves to get the two USN aircraft carriers and one heavy cruiser out of Hawaii, and harm's way, and into the West Coast. Also, they use their 7 air moves to re-base and distribute their air units over several units across the Hawaii Archipelago. There's also a USA air unit on Wake, Island. The objective was to distribute the US air units and not have a concentration of air susceptible to a Japanese port strike.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Allied #7. USSR. Rail. Blue Factory at Tula to Kuybyshev.

I wrested with whether or not the Soviets needed to continue to rail their blue factories east. In the end I decided to be on the safe side and send the blue factory at Tula to Kuybshev. Next to go east will be Kalinin followed by, if necessary, Moscow.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #9. Germany. Ground Strikes. The Eastern Front.

With the weather in the Arctic turning from blizzard to snow the Germany decides to make two land combat attacks, both supported first by ground strikes. Each ground strike disorganizes one of two units in the hex to be attacked.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #9. Germany. Land Combat #1. The Eastern Front.

The first land combat is a Blitz attack which is supported by both the Luftwaffe and Red Air Force. No air units are shot down and the end result is that the Soviets are able to add 3 factors to their defense and the Germans add 2. The blitz is technically a win for the Germans but the Soviets see both units shattered, and not destroyed, and the Germans lose an SS mech division.

Turn 14. Nov/Dec 1941. Axis #9. Germany. Land Combat #2. The Eastern Front. Vitebsk.

The second land combat is the German's second attempt to clear the city of Vitebsk. This attack is an assault and is an overwhelming victory for the Germans.

Why have you flown Italian NAVs as reaction, to a low box, without an air escort?
Either you place them with your FTRs; or you first place these 2 FTRs at the 1 box - during your turn - in the 2 Box and then you fly them of reaction in the 2 box to give a +1 of the search.

Centuur -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/7/2016 6:43:22 PM)

A couple of points on the Soviet frontlines, especially up north.

First: It's not good to have the Leningrad MIL leave the city, since if it gets destroyed, usually you won't be able to put it back on the map when Leningrad gets encircled, since the place is full.

Second: There are too many Soviet units sitting in positions they are not usefull in. Look the Pskov - Leningrad - Novgorod area:

You've got two units north of Leningrad, sitting in a hex which can be attacked out of two other hexes by Finnish forces, when Leningrad itself is a real fortress (swamp, rivers). There are units doing nothing in Novgorod too. Why not make a frontline from Pskov to the swamps east instead. This makes the attack on Pskov much more difficult for Germany (and that attack will come), when the weather clears. The way things are now in that region, Germany can simply ignore the Soviet army there. When it is only three hexes away from Vitebsk, they can't ignore those Soviets when marching to Moscow.

If Moscow is the target of the Wehrmacht, divert them towards the north instead. You rather lose Pskov and Novgorod than Moscow.

A mistake on my part. One I hope to learn from.

Thanks! Keep NAVs with fighters ... I know that but I certainly did do that this time and the Italians paid.

I'll move it back. But for this turn, Zuhkvo was railed from Asia and is sitting under that unit. After this turn he'll be reorganized and will move back towards Moscow. I'll get the 6-2 MIL to Leningrad by rail if possible.

Good advice. I need to consolidate the Soviet line around what's important and in the North that's Moscow.
