Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. South China Sea. Round 1.

It's a massacre. The USN loses one of their modern aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser.

The battle ends after this initial round when the USN, and CW air units, decide to withdraw (i.e., run away).

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. Bay of Bengal.

In the Bay of Bengal, the lone Japanese I-boat elects to initiate combat against the CW CP. In response, the CW flies in a fighter unit to the 0-box. The Japanese I-boat finds the CW convoy.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. Bay of Bengal. Round 1.

However, the Japanese I-boat because of the presence of the fighter unit in the 0-box and because the Japanese only got 3 surprise points, instead of the 4 needed to select the type of naval battle, must fight an air battle.

The air battle is toothless because neither the Japanese sub or the CW fighter unit have the ability to attack the other. But the fighter unit did it's job and saved the CP.

Combat ends as the Japanese I-boat loses contact with the CW CP.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. Timor Sea.

The Japanese choose not to try to initiate combat in this area. Because the Japanese didn't add any additional units to this sea area the USA was not given a chance to initiate as the non-phasing player.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. Bismarck Sea.

Though heavily outnumbered, the Japanese being the Japanese choose to initiate combat in the Bismarck Sea in hopes of sinking MacArthur's transport. The Japanese hope to repay MacArthur in kind for the USN sinking of Yamamoto's transport.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. IJN. Bismarck Sea. Round 2.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. Germany. The Eastern Front.

With storms raging in the Arctic and rain in the North Temperate, no land combat, just movement, by the Germans on the Eastern Front.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Axis #3. Euro-Axis. Italy.

On the east coast the Euro-axis moved to contain the USA beachhead and protect their factory at Taranto. However, when reviewing the "maps" of their post battle troop dispositions German and Italy high command see a fatal flaw. The two losses taken in the land combat were stacked with the disorganized Italian AA division in Naples, which is now alone. This division, which is disorganized and alone, will only defend with one. It's a given that the Western Allies will capture Naples and the factory there next turn. Since the allies hold Tripoli then whether or not Italy surrenders depends on the garrison ratio, which I don't know. Very interesting developments. And a major error made by the Italian player.

I need to be more careful in selecting which units take losses in the future. I'd say this is much less obvious on in the computer version than in the cardboard and paper version.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. USA. Philippines.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/15/2016 9:49:02 PM)

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. RN. Bay of Biscay.

Can't forgot about the convoy lines and protecting them. The RN replaces the CPs lost, or aborted, on the first impulse. They also move significant escorts into key area such as the Bay of Biscay. There are 2 organized German u-boat units in Brest and 4 in Keil. Two of the four units in Kiel have the range to reach all the way to the USA East Coast and beyond (e.g., Caribbean). As such, the RN uses this naval to put escorts in other key sea areas through which the allies convoy their resources.

As the allied player I really hate German u-boats and Italian submarines! They are more than a distraction. The cause diversion of significant resources to fight and to keep the allied convoy lines up. Axis submarines are like the running game in the NFL. You need at least 20 to 25 attempts a game, regardless of yards, to win consistently even, or especially, if you have an outstanding passing game.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. RN. East Med.

No attempt, or desire, by either side to initiate a combat in the East Med. The real show is in Italy and possibly off the Italian Coast.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. RN. Italian Coast.

The RN has not desire for combat this impulse in this sea area.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. Euro-Axis. Italian Coast.

However, in desperation, the axis do. The axis surprise and manage to isolate sea box 0 containing valuable allied transports. One of which is carrying Monty's HQ unit. Monty who had been regulated to garrison duty in East Libya, successfully lobbied to get into the Battle for Italy. However, there's a good chance his HQ unit won't make it. Hopefully its just an abort but the axis have significant air superiority over the allies in the isolated sea box 0.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. Euro-Axis. Italian Coast. Round 1.

Ouch ...

For the allies I guess it could have been worse. The axis had a good chance of sinking two RN transports but only managed to sink one and damage w/abort the second. But ouch anyway!

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. Euro-Axis. Italian Coast. Round 2.

The allies shut the naval battle off the Italian Coast down. Now they can focus on potentially knocking Italy out of the war.

Turn 22. Mar/Apr 1943. Allied #5. Western Allies. Land Combat. Naples, Italy.

Enough though the land combat looked to be automatic the RN provided maximum shore bombardment support in the good chance that the Luftwaffe would get defensive ground support through. And they did, and with maximum RN shore bombardment the low roll of 5 for the land combat exactly produced a modified roll of 23.

Courtenay -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/16/2016 1:29:10 AM)

The key thing about the garrison rules are that units in ZOCs don't count. Air units (except CVPs) and most corps count one, although ARM, MECH, and HQ-ARM corps count double. Divisions count half. German units do not count at all, only Italians. What tends to decide this in the Allies favor are all the Allied planes landing in Italy. The key is to have a region that is not ZOCed by the Axis.

At the moment, most the Allied units look like they are in ZOCs; the Allies should work on clearing out rear areas, so they can land their planes and have them count toward the garrison value.
