So much depends upon the features a person enjoys. Tactical games are my preference. I have all of the games mentioned above. If I had to make a list of the top five they would be as follows.

1. Combat Mission.
2. Flashpoint Red Storm
3. Campaign Series
4. Heroes of Stalingrad
5. Squad Battles

I just bought Tigers on the Hunt and so far I like it. It has the genuine ASL type tactical feel. However the UI needs development. There is way too much mouse clicking. Also there is no multiplayer or PBEM.

So much depends upon what you like in a game. The only one above that provides everything a person might want is Combat Mission. It has PBEM, Online multiplayer, Wego turn based, or RT. It actively supports modding and has a very active community. Of course you have to like the game and CM is not everyone's cup of tea.

The title of the thread is the Most Realistic Tactical Level Game. Based upon that, and not counting FPS games like ARMA,
I would say that Combat Mission Is the best tactical level game.

I have to add my voice in support of PC:Ostfront. One of the finest games made IMO. The patches have improved it over the years. It is a game that REALLY makes you have to think about tactics. As someone else stated, you cannot just send your units forward and hope for the best. Well actually, you can, but you will lose the scenario in very short order. My favourite tactical game.

I agree, a wonderful tactical game and it will teach you alot about tactics! [:)]

Many of you guys myself included are always griping about the AI. Now, when you get one that is great you seem to gripe about that too. [:D] I only really play two wargames now maybe three. That's PCO, Norbsoft's Civilwar series and Command Ops. Three of the greatest wargames ever made. Sorry WitP:AE or the other Wit* games but you didn't get a vote. (from me hehe). I've never heard a great word about the ai in those games I think is the reason they didn't get a vote. I've played the first 3 myself.

Because of this thread I decided to take another stab at Panzer Command Ostfront. Doing the tutorial (on Easy and following instructions!) and in less than one minute of game time my platoon of five PzIII's has been reduced to three destroyed, one abandoned, and one routing. The last one never even moved from it's starting point! All due to two 45mm AT guns.

Does that sound right? I wonder if the updates have skewed the balance of the tutorial, it is a pretty short range engagement.

Did you try the demo for Ostfront or the much older Winterstorm?

This is the full game of PC:O, fully updated. Just for fun, the situation, we didn't make it very far:

Yeah, that really was a bit of bad luck wasn't it? It looks worse in a screenshot than it did just reading your earlier post!

Now I'll have to go back and follow the tutorial myself again.

thanks
Rick

Though a better list might be:

1. Panzer Command: Osfront
2. Command Ops
3. Norbsoft's Civil War series
4. Mark Walker's Heroes of Stalingrad
5. X-Com the golden years [:D]

Yeah,I know Command Ops isn't tactical squad level, but, it still plays tactically if you let it. [:)]

wodin -> RE: Most realistic tactical level game (3/8/2016 12:10:45 PM)

my list..

Combat Mission X2 series (due to WEGO it beats GT to the top spot)
Graviteam Tactics Series
Steal Panthers
Squad Battles
Jagged Alliance 2
Silent Storm (until the horrible sci fi part)

Was debating Command Ops and Flashpoint Camapigns: Red Storm but they I think come more into Grand Tactical. Though both easy would go joint 3rd in the list. Also there is one other game series that I work on that hiopefully in the not to distant future will get in the list due to all the improvements. At the moment however I can't put it in taking in the current public release). However it is streets ahea din temrs of under the hood complexity so I'd say is the most realistic..that doesn't at present mean the bets game or the most enjoyable. Realism actually can stop a game being a game as such and become quite dry. I suppose you could say it's the David Glantz where as you can get GTOS which is more Jason Marks.

I wouldn't include ASL in a realistic game list. While it does have unit morale and leaders, the leaders don't lead their own platoon but free agents.

I was talking about Tigers on the Hunt not ASL.

Why not tell us what makes your list?

I certainly would, in the heat of a battle any platoon member will be influenced and benefit from any friendly leader. ASL has many, many realistic traits...I've learned so much from that wonderful game! [:)]

So I went back and tried the tutorial scenario again, on Normal instead of Easy. Turns out I really did simply have some awful luck the first time. This time I advanced just a bit more cautiously and easily knocked out the AT guns, then I was able to deal with the surprise enemy tank platoon. No losses among my tanks except some mobility damage.

Excited to try out a campaign now that I have a handle on the game. Probably the only thing I'm still struggling with is positioning sub-units within a platoon. Hard to break those Combat Mission habits of micro-managing the placement of every last unit in the field.

Glad to hear you didn't have a repeat!

As far as positioning the squads or tank subunits, you can still do that within the scope of the general order, though you might not need to, at least in the early stages of a battle.

Thanks for letting us know that your second try went better.

Thanks
Rick

Why nobody has mentioned that here already?
