When the hawk took off, the bird it had looked bigger than a sparrow. The feathers it had been plucking were white down feathers. There were doves about, maybe it got one of those.

LST Express -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/6/2018 1:17:35 PM)

A few weeks ago I was sitting in my backyard and there were several doves sitting on top of my wood fence. We have a bird bath so they come and go some days to get a drink. This hawk came swooping in from behind them and plucked one right off the fence. His flight path took him right in front of us as he veered towards the back fence and flew off. All that was left in his wake was dove feathers drifting slowly towards the ground.

Lecivius -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/6/2018 1:51:26 PM)

Over the 4th, I popped a crow in my back yard ( I HATE crows). I went & got a bag to put it in and throw away. Insert crow, turn to the side of the house with the trash can, and there was a Coopers Hawk perched on my camper looking at me. I could just picture an 'Atta Boy!' from him (the crows harass the hawks mercilessly).

Gave me a warm fuzzy, anyways [8D]

Crows eat dead skunks off the road. Maybe you should have given the crow to the hawk for lunch?

Moving back to Colorado from California as a kid, crossed the state line near Moab on I-70. What was the very first song played over the radio? "Dead skunks in the middle of the road".

To this day I still remember that moment. Massive culture shock, thinking to myself "WTF have I gotten into??!!??" [:D]

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/6/2018 3:42:32 PM)

I was a passenger in a car going down the interstate here, with high ground to the left and the Meramec valley to the right. A bald eagle swooped down right in front of us headed into the valley. There was a crow right on it's tail.

MakeeLearn -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/6/2018 4:15:19 PM)

This last winter there was a Chickadee that would find me in the yard, come and land next to me and tweet to let me know that the bird-feeder was empty.

RangerJoe -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/6/2018 7:10:07 PM)

Those chickadees are brave. I used to put sunflower seeds on the outside window ledge on my second floor apartment. A chickadee would sing while sorting through the seeds, deciding which one that it wanted while my cat glared at it from less than 6 inches away - with the window between them.

I have also seen blackbirds chasing crows away.

I have some PTSD about that song. I had a bunch of mix tapes like most kids did back in the day and a few were favorites from Dr Demento. One day in college I was singing along with Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road on the way home from school and later that afternoon my cat got run over in front of the house. My father saw it happen and the sound of his voice when he came in cradling the dead cat still haunts me more than 30 years later. She was a nice cat too. We only had her about 6 months.

On the lighter side, there was a group of people who used to rent out most of the lodging in the small town of Sekiu, WA (pronounced C-Q) for a weekend every year. I went a few years and one year there was a bald eagle that would cruise over the marina about every 1/2 hour. When it came over, every seagull would make a lot of noise and try to get higher than the eagle. The eagle was mostly looking down so I think it was fishing, but it probably was getting Scheudenfreude from scaring the gulls.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/11/2018 1:49:34 AM)

During the Dust Bowl that wasn't an unusual event. What I said about the Goldfinch eating Milkweed seeds is likely wrong. The milkweed seds have this flax attached to them and the Goldfinch was likely acquiring that for nest building.

This is one of those "what ship is this" things. I was trying to find where the picture below was taken so I could figure out what that is behind the flag on the stern of the ship. At first I thought maybe two shell splashes from the main guns, but no, couldn't be. An artificial structure then, maybe a gantry for loading ships? Anyway, what ship is this?

One of the semi-dreadnoughts the Japanese built before WWI?

The ship that once fought with ANZACs against Germans and was later celebrated in Australia when visiting. Those twists of history

That picture is in Wikipedia as BC Ibuki, which was the one that escorted the ANZAC convoy.

Ibuki it is. More of my idea of what a BC should be.

Sorry, Bernard Hermann, Ennio wins.

In case you don't know who Bernard Hermann was, he did the music for most of Hitchcock's '50s and '60s music. Here's some from a non-Hitchcock film.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/12/2018 10:31:33 PM)

Robert Mitchum is almost my favorite actor, after Burt Lancaster.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/12/2018 10:44:39 PM)

I'm going to ramble a bit. Some think Hitchcock's greatest film is Vertigo, and I'm one of those. Here is a graphic for the film. The eye in the picture belongs to Barbara Bel Geddes, and the glasses too. She played what seemed to be a bit part, and yet she is central to the film. Hitchcock, like many other directors, made dream films, and the question in this one is "who is the dreamer?" It's Barbara. Also, Herrmann's music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owm8RkA3FtA
