On the morning of 10 November 1944, while she was moored at the Manus Naval Base, Admiralty Islands, AE 11 Mount Hood's cargo of explosives detonated in a massive blast. The AE 11 Mount Hood was a merchant acquired by USN on 28 January 1944 and converted to ammunition ship. The ship was utterly destroyed by the accident, which killed all those on board her. Damage and casualties were also inflicted on ships anchored as far as 2000 yards away. Personnel casualties on Mount Hood and on other vessels totalled 45 known dead, 327 missing and 371 injured. USS Mindanao (ARG-3) was about 350 yards away. USS Mindanao had 180 crewmen killed and injured by this explosion. She was under repair until 21 December

AE Ammunition Ships going BOOM!

My mistake on calling it Ulithi. Central Nervous System Flatulence. You'd think with my last name being Hood, I would at least get that right!

jwolf -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/29/2018 2:42:45 AM)

Ships named Hood did not fare well in WW2.

Who came up with the idea to name Ammo ships after a volcano!

Obviously someone with a twisted (and great) sense of humor! [:D]

"Ammunition Ships - AE - Volcanoes, or explosive related"

Not a criticism at all, but I believe in the Soviet Union most Sturmoviks were piloted by women, and they weren't fooling around. I believe sometimes they landed in a field and scalped the tank crews they'd killed.

Not just pilots, they had this lovely man killer:

Smart, beautiful and deadly

I'll have a pepperoni pizza with Beethoven on the side.

The members of BTO were working on this anthem for the working class when a pianist and composer named Norman Durkee stuck his head in the studio and said, unsolicited, “I think that song needs a little bit of piano on it to lift it up,” according to BTO singer Fred Turner. When guitarist Randy Bachman asked Durkee what he would do, the musician, who had been at the studio working for someone else, suggested a Little Richard-like groove, then proceeded to compose the intro on a pizza box before recording it. “He walked into the studio and knocked it off in one take,” Turner said.

Heh. Really cool. I especially liked that there was some little kid's sheet music on the piano as the delivery guy flew through the exposition of the 3rd movement of the Moonlight Sonata.

But she did love men as well, even one not as smart as her. She also used to climb into her college dorm room at 3 or 4 am . . .

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/31/2018 1:25:44 AM)

Sorry, BBfanboy, here he is playing the same thing but not in that house on that piano.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/31/2018 1:27:03 AM)

I think he's actually an octopus in disguise.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/31/2018 1:39:17 AM)

Sorry, this appears to be, at least in part, a fraud. The player has YouTube videos from 4 years ago playing the same piece.

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/31/2018 1:43:47 AM)

Also there is video of him playing at a much younger age with sheet music spread before him, so that part of his story is BS.

RangerJoe -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (7/31/2018 1:46:10 AM)

What else would you expect from the washington post. Look up who owns it . . .

I knew that James Cook named the Hawaiian Islands the "Sandwich Islands". I just learned that he also named the New Hebrides Islands the "South Sandwich Islands". So what does that make Tarawa and Canton Island and so forth, the "Peanut Butter and Jelly Islands"?

I think those are in the Atlantic.

Nope, Ham and Cheese . . .

Or in the case of the Pacific where you may not have the refridgeration capabilities, SPAM!

geofflambert -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (8/1/2018 2:53:39 PM)

Sir James must've been hungry for sandwiches all the time, then, maybe because he couldn't cook?

When I saw that profile picture of the island I wonders what a Russian Akula sub had to do with the Sandwich Islands ... [8|]

That is what can happen when you go to Detroit to play baseball . . .

jwolf -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (8/2/2018 2:54:42 PM)

Detroit's shortstop looks pretty good on defense ...

Lecivius -> RE: OT Thighs to ponder (8/2/2018 2:59:25 PM)

I've heard that was a tough place to play, but this is ridiculous! [:D]
