A B-2 bomber flew right over my house today. The purpose was to salute health care workers.

What's the point in that? Didn't your head honcho say the stealth bomber is invisible?

geofflambert -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/9/2020 1:26:48 AM)

Now, for today's bird you may recall me introducing a female rose-breasted grosbeak. Here she is again

geofflambert -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/9/2020 1:28:20 AM)

Today I managed to get a pic of her boyfriend. Let's see if I can find that so you can see him. Hmmmm, is this him?

geofflambert -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/9/2020 1:29:15 AM)

No, that's not him. How about this?

geofflambert -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/9/2020 1:30:14 AM)

Nope, that can't be him. Maybe he's hiding in this pic ...

You can see here he's not much bigger than a house sparrow.

I posted pics of this bird on NextDoor (a social networking site) and a neighbor posted a pic in response (said it was taken yesterday):

One of them was raised, was being towed to the West Coast but sank along the way. I guess that the system damage was too high . . . [8|]

That was Oklahoma, capsized after the attack, salvaged at great expense, effort and imagination over about two years. Patched up for the tow back to the USA but a heavy storm broke the tow and the skeleton crew could not do damage control.

I saw this picture of a loon. It is not a common loon!

geofflambert -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/15/2020 12:28:29 AM)

Looks like it's as big as a rowboat. Fiberglass.

RangerJoe -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/15/2020 12:39:02 AM)

I did say that it was not a common loon. If I see a picture of it with a boat nearby, I could post that as well.

durnedwolf -> OT Things to ponder (5/16/2020 3:34:36 PM)

So I'm guessing I need to put meat in the feeder for this bird... Would beef jerky be OK?

What is this anyway - a Great White Seagul?

But it doesn't have a laser on its head...

Will_L -> RE: OT Things to ponder (5/27/2020 8:27:39 PM)

Learned something new today...
Pigeons apparently mourn over fallen members of their flock. A pigeon has been standing vigil over a dead pigeon across the street for several hours now, occasionally it pecks at it, nudges it and has even tried to pick it up and fly off with it but hasn't been able to accomplish that. If a car or person approaches it flies up to a windowsill nearby and watches until its safe to return to its comrade. First time I've seen a pigeon do this.

Pretty sure that would be the surviving spouse. They mate for life.

The AMA has come up with a new specialty title. Professionals treating E.D. will now be known as Orthodocs.

Thanks Geoff, didn't know they mated for life.
Vigil lasted a bit over 5 hours.

BBfanboy -> RE: OT Things to ponder (6/18/2020 7:44:05 PM)

OK - we have gone long enough without bird news to take us out of our inner sanctums. Here's proof that birds get cranky about the lockdown too and take it out on people ...

fcooke -> RE: OT Things to ponder (6/18/2020 8:15:02 PM)

Oddly enough I have been seeing more diverse bird life recently. More blue jays, robins, etc. And then a couple of days ago a pair of starlings. I thought they usually stayed pretty close to the ocean. We are about 75 miles from the ocean. But they are fun to watch. I still have never caught our blue heron taking a fish. But I did see our bear a few days ago. she and I have an agreement we won't eat each other.
