Linux Install Guide for WITP AE

First you will need to have Wine and Play on Linux installed. Some distributions come with it already loaded. If not add from your software center or synaptic package manger program.

Depending upon your software manager, you might just need to install Play on Linux and it will automatically install Wine for you.

That should be very easy.[:)]

Then start Play on Linux. It should start in a window like this...

Here you can see I already have one game installed, but yet I am playing two and the second is a DaIronBabes game...so a clean 2nd install of the game makes a lot of sense for me.

Follow along...

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 1:45:32 PM)

You know, before I go any further, is this guide better place in General or here in Tech Support?

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 3:01:52 PM)

I think here is where I would look for it, but I know some people have a very definite view that this really should only be for technical technical support....

I'd be fascinated to read all this as I'd love to escape having to use Windows on my Mac with all the rubbish that goes with it.

Roger

BillBrown -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 4:21:51 PM)

I think this is a good place for it. Michaelm can see by the topic that it is not a bug report.

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:10:10 PM)

Ok, you have play on linux running, click on install a program or install...two choices takes you to the same place.

Here.

Choose that you want to install a program.

You will use Edit choice below when you repeat these steps installing the latest official update and the beta patch.

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:14:41 PM)

This opens up a new window,

There will be long list of programs but no WITP AE. What heathens.

That is ok, in the lower left click on install a non-listed program.

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:27:00 PM)

Using temagic's list [&o], go ahead and check them off one by one until you are done.

Double check.

Triple check.

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:29:25 PM)

Tough part is done...

now select Browse to find your WITP AE .exe file.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:33:56 PM)

Ok just starting to look at this, I'm on a Mac and when I go to the Play on Linux downloads I see this.....

What do I download?

Roger

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:34:44 PM)

Easily found hanging out in my downloads folder...

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:40:33 PM)

Next, pretty easy.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/D8ACF5DF2B334FAFBB233A3142F67861.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:42:28 PM)

Wow, look at that.

Follow the installer's routine.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/C3EEFB242BBC48AAA5E4898AFAD4EBE7.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:45:30 PM)

Let's see. You accepted the EULA, let the installer pick the directory, entered your key, and installed the game...

Next up we need to choose a file to make a shortcut to.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/68A99B1209A348488ABB201A2650282F.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:47:08 PM)

Now I name my shortcut...

[image]local://upfiles/44178/6727DC3583064256A1F1146BFF31C327.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:49:59 PM)

I have the option of naming and selecting more shortcuts should I so desire...I don't.

And I am done.

Play on Linux now looks like this, all I need to do is select Jocke's game and run.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/1AFE84C1F69445969D473F072F293BB2.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:57:06 PM)

But what about the switches, Lowpe?

Okay...

To get fullscreen support and add switches, edit the Witp:AE shortcut-file in

/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/shortcuts/ (you may need to press "control h" to reveal the hidden files in the username folder)

and add the -px -py parameters after "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" and any other switches you want to play around with making sure to leave the two characters at the end of the line.

so that it reads:

POL_Wine "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1280 -py800 $@

Another example:
POL_Wine "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -pxf1920 -pyf1018 -multiaudio -cpu2 -dd_sw "$@"

Important add: I strongly suggest you try running the game in either -w or -f (windowed or full) mode first to see if the program works. The px and py or pxf and pyf listed in the two examples might now work with your computer.

You can check the display information for your monitor and use those too. Play with the switches once you have the game up and running to avoid frustration.

Also, check your system settings information and find out what your graphics card is and what driver you are using. Not all Linux distributions are equal here and you may need to install a driver or select the driver since sometimes your Linux distribution will use a safe, stable and underperforming open source driver rather than the latest and greatest from Nvidia. So check.

You can use any text editor to do this make the corrections and make sure you save the file before closing the program.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 5:58:11 PM)

That all looks quite simple thank you, but the very first step of Wine and Linux install is probably so simple because you are used to it, but for anyone new to it there is the initial stumbling block, can you explain precisely how to do those please?

Also once up and running, how do you?

1. Save a file and either send it to your opponent, or get a file from your opponent and put it into the game?
2. Install any update or mods etc?
3. How do you install things like Tracker?

Thx

Roger

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 6:05:49 PM)

To install the latest official patch simply choose to "edit or update" on the screen shown in Post #6 and follow normally.

To install the Beta, follow the above steps, but when finished, go into the folders and simply copy the contents of the Beta2 folder and paste them in your main folder overwriting the existing files.

You won't be able to start an official game then, but really who does that?

Save games are in this path:

home/username/playonlinux's virtual drives/witpaejocke/dosdevices c:/matrix games/war in the pacific admirals edition/save

That is a long path...but you can easily create a shortcut to it.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 6:10:49 PM)

Thanks, can you have a look at my post number 12 please?

Roger, you aren't giving me enough time to crank out the posts![:D]

I think I answered the above questions except tracker, which I have no clue yet how to run. But I will work on it.

I saw your earlier post...to, but wanted to keep cranking out the main install posts before getting to it.

New Linux users would be advised to use either a Debian or Ubuntu distribution...all major distributions in debian or ubuntu will come with a pre-installed software manager or synaptic package manager or even both (I actually have 3 different ones installed),.

They handle adding and removing software...below is the synaptic package manager, I just typed in play on linux, select it, and it will install play on linux and all the dependencies that are needed to run the program (even wine I think).

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 6:18:00 PM)

Seriously appreciate all this, I will start to play, thank you so much.

Roger

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 6:19:46 PM)

Here is a simpler installer for software with pretty pictures.

I can add/remove/upadte software from here...upadte all software at once, or select what I want to update.

The program will automatically choose for me a stable working version best suited for my operating system.

Lowpe -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 6:25:20 PM)

Ok, after taking a break, I double checked, and thanks to Roger, I caught the glaring errors I made.

I think I caught every potential problem with a screenshot to make the install as painless as possible. I may put a screenshot up of how you select your graphics driver.

I don't have a lot of experience with debian distributions, but as I understand it debian uses C+ a lot, and that might be the key in getting tracker to work....so I am guessing that tracker won't work in an ubuntu distribtion without first adding C+ to it, but it might work in a debian distribution without that additional step.

That is pure wild speculation with just a hint from one post I was able to research on the forum.

Enough for now.

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Linux Install Guide (7/16/2016 8:46:00 PM)

Ok have had a go at this. My experience to date.... creating this in Parallels on my Mac.

1. Downloaded Ubuntu and installed it through Parallels desktop
2. Installed Synaptic Package Manager
3. Installed PlayonLinux via Synaptic Package Manager (which included Wine)
5. Configured Wine
6. Was then able to follow through your instructions

Note post 7 & 8 are wrong order in my experience

However once I have done the switches something goes horribly wrong, I am guessing its the size settings in there - so I have ended up with a black desktop and the game is running in some form of garbled view which I cannot stop?

Have closed the virtual drive and am letting my brain cool down.

Thanks Roger, I have gone back and corrected the posts so it should flow correctly now.

I added a section on graphics drivers and suggested starting size switches...try starting in either windowed or full screen mode, just the simple -w or -f.

Also, check you graphics driver. In ubuntu it is under the Software & Updates application.

If you have a long list of proprietary drivers to chose from start with the ones that are tested first.

To convert that to linux speak that means you have a dual boot machine and can choose which operating system you want to load. Great.

What version of Ubuntu did you install there are lots of flavors and numbers.

On a desktop, that is 5 years or less of age, I recommend Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. That is a rough suggestion.

If you don't like the main Ubuntu Desktop, called Unity, you can change it to one of many flavors. This youtube video gives you a decent idea of the different desktops out there, and then just search the net on how to change the desktop. Don't worry you can always change back to a previous desktop when you log in.

For example on one machine I am running Classic Gnome and on another I am running Cinnamon but both machines are Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Roger I hope that helps. I know how frustrating this can be...
