Timotheus -> How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 12:34:39 AM)

Is it coded enough to give a challenge? Or is it scripted, so it goes after different bases on same paths based on a date without regard to historical situation?

What happens if history goes off the rails due to player actions - can AI cope?

Does AI have priority targets which it tries to take, whether it is possible for it to do or not?

Does the AI "break" after some time in game and do total nonsense moves?

btd64 -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 12:51:03 AM)

The AI is scripted. It will break if you attack to early in a GC or don't let it take historical gains. If you let it do its thing, it will give you a good fight. Setting AI difficulty the Hard or Very Hard also helps.

Now their is an option. Andy Mac is improving the original AI scripts to be more of a challenge. If you want some pain, try the Nasty versions. They come in three flavors, Tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3. Tier three is kinda like Ghost Pepper hot sauce.

Or something better than Tier 3, PBEM with a live opponent. Can't be beat....GP

Timotheus -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 1:00:19 AM)

Well, I didn't buy the game, I am waiting for a serious sale.

Link to mods which help the AI please?

Edit: Also, I do not think I can do the the "live opponent" thing. Time commitment, life, gym, lawyering up, chicks, clubbin' and other assorted nonsense would get in the way.

Due to schedule, I would be able to binge on this game for a day or two, and then have to leave it alone for week(s).

Thanks.

I assume the vanilla game can become broken by player actions, then?

I sense a new Marky. And yeah, that's old guy secret code.

geofflambert -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 2:05:58 AM)

History always goes off the rails. Hate to sound like a commercial, but that's what it does.

I read the other thread also, but I decided that his vented remarks there had more to do with frustration in trying to figure out what this overwhelming (in complexity AND size) game is about AND how to go about getting his head around it.

I've owned the game since it first came out, (and WitP original before that), but due to their size and complexity I had to shelve them until I retired last year, which I suspect is why there are a disproportionate number of us older guys in this forum.

P.S I'm an older guy but I don't know the old guy secret code meaning of Marky. What am I missing? LOL

We'll tell you at the meeting in the secret place tonight! [:D]

geofflambert -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 2:16:09 AM)

I have the meeting place bugged so that I can get the code. At least I think I have the right meeting place bugged. The last time the Orkin man said something about dating his sister, or that's what I thought I heard. Problem is, aside from my poor hearing, the old guys (like witpqs) don't think I'm old enough yet.

The secret meeting place place is not the place, it's the other place.

Pass it on.

For geofflambert's sake, any where along I-70 will do! Gorn's don't usually travel too far.

Now I really don't understand how Bullwinkle58 qualifies for the old guy's club and I don't. I suspect there are some double double secret entry codes to the clubhouse.

This is true. My starship is always in the shop because that's where I want it. Nonetheless I would make a special effort to show up at the secret meeting place.

How about Hagerstown, MD, then?

geofflambert -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 2:50:39 AM)

I could suggest a meeting place that I actually dined at once, a very long time ago:

No relation to me as far as I know. The "Home of the Throwed Rolls" thing was about how they wouldn't deliver your rolls to your table in the ordinary fashion, you had to fish them out of the air as they were flying by.

Or a little out of the way, but sometimes I make a rather long weekend trip to Fairview Heights, IL, just to partake in the closest one.

Well, it is along I-70, LOL. Been thru there a few times in the early 70's on the way to Nuke school in Bainbridge MD, just the other side of Baltimore.

There's also one in Foley, AL.

Now, again, GET OFF MY LAWN!!! [:D]

jamesjohns -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 4:35:52 AM)

I play BigBabes on hard setting. I try to let the AI do its thing through about mid42, let Japan advance historically. I also try to play with self-imposed house rules to make decisions with the constraints the Allies had, esp. at the start of the war. Game gives me plenty of challenges

Thanks.

Japanese AI can be broken by gamey actions like:

-rushing every spare Allied unit to Singapore so the AI bleeds itself dry in constant Shock Attacks there.
-putting all spare units in Moulmein, blocking AI advance into Burma
-doing the same to Batavia, Palembang and other critical locations
-early invasion of Home Islands via the Aleutians

The Allies can do this because they are not constrained by supply i.e supply produced in India can be used by Allied units of any nationality. Since supply represents (among other things) ammunition and devices, you can say India manufactures B-17 aircraft and Sherman tanks in Calcutta slums. This alone can break the AI since you can mount unrealistic offensive from India to Thailand, Malayas and Indochina.

But if you role-paly this thing a bit, the AI can give a good game.

Dili -> RE: How is the AI in the game? As Allies? As Japan? (9/8/2016 8:29:34 AM)

Grand campaign AI is lackluster . At limit it can break a game since it can do total nonsense moves like sending a carrier TF in a suicide raid -seems less occuring compared to earlier versions- or repeating moves where it got heavy losses before.

PBEM or the small scenarios are the good way to play this game without thinking about if you will be breaking the game. In grand campaign you have to follow somewhat the historical moves.

Still be rewarding because there are so many battles so many things occurring, some parts where the AI put a good fight.

Two rules of WITP:AE

You do not talk about WITP:AE, and the second rule is that You do not talk about WITP:AE.
