Central China has been an ongoing source of frustration. I moved quickly at the start to close the line, hoping to pocket 4 or 5 Chinese corps, especially the good corps that start in the woods south of Sinyang. Bad weather for 4 days grounded my air force, and I was unable to interdict their movement, so they all escaped. Then, as I wanted to push forward, at least 1 squadron of AVG moved in, and I had to be very coy with my Sallies or lose them and their Nate escorts by the score to the crack U.S. squadron. So I decided to proceed more cautiously. With the withdrawal of AVG from Loyang, I saw an opportunity yesterday to interdict the allied retreat from the Loyang/Chenchow region and possibly overtake them. Bad weather foiled my strike again. Today, however, the skies cleared and the air corps went to work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on 80th Chinese Corps, at 87,43 (Loyang) Weather in hex: Heavy cloud Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet. Here is a tip on one of the finer points of the game. In some cases, when retreating, you do not want to set your units to "follow" a leader, unless you are sure that you want to keep the stack together as part of a fighting retreat. Why? Because an airstrike on one or two of the units will slow down the entire stack by flipping those units to combat mode and then the entire stack will move at the rate of the slowest unit. Can the Japanese advance overtake at least some of these units? If the whole stack remains coherent, is Japanese force sufficient to inflict a significant loss in the Chinese in open country? I do not know, but we shall see.
