Looks like he has massed ships N, S and SE of the KB to pounce on any allied attempt to hit KB. Likely a huge CAP trap too. He must be feeling that if he can't hide KB from you he might as well use it as bait.

Feb 13, 1943 The 13th saw the initiation of the new small unit hopping strategy I hope to employ near the Home Islands. There are a lot of islands off of Kyushu and a few more off of Honshu, and these are tough to garrison for the Japanese as they can't move restricted troops to most. In this op extensive Hurry, Lancer and Lighting sweeps went in over the smaller islands around Okinawa followed by the 4Es targeting troops. Paras then landed and captured all three islands!! [&o] It'll be hard to build these up and defend them, but I can fly engineers in and make it tough for the Japanese while then working on the next layer and sweeping any LR CAP he has around. I've got more to use for the next level, but want to also get the fast transports up to use for the Korean coast. Babeldaob fell easily. Now it's not to Yap, Wolei and soon Guam. The other side is embarking and moving in a loose configuration to reduce SIGINT through the North Pacific. I'll have to keep a close eye on the KB position and be ready to reverse tack quickly. If I get to Marcus and Pagan undetected I'll go in regardless of what's near. The USN CVs will be moving to support from Manila after picking up the nearly repaired Wasp following the Babeldaob support just completed. Tried an attack near Tunghua but a last minute fortification doomed that battle for the Soviets. He knows I'm short CVs after the Yamato mess and that I won't be doing anything offensive with them soon.

Feb 14, 1943 The IJN immediately targets the newly taken islands with bombardments. He also sends in an invasion on Tokunerashima, the farthest and most difficult for me to support. It fails in a 1:4 but if he keeps on this will be touch and go. Lowpe also tries something odd at Shanghai, sending in CA Mikuma with one DD. Not sure if it was a missed bombardment or what, but it's targeted by a Wildebeest TB group that get off ten drops in the first wave as escorts maul the Japanese LR CAP. in the afternoon it's a bit reversed, and that will likely be the last hurrah for the Beests this game. A very risky move. Feb 15-16, 1943 The Japanese take back Tokunerashima handily, but I've now got some engineers on the other two bases and should get some forts built I the next few days. Looks like the incursion by Mikuma was an intended bombardment, maybe? Anyway, she gets away but does little damage. Thanks for posting updates ( with any delay ). Most fascinating game. Really a brawl. Of Interest: Feb 1943 Air Frame losses 3600 vs 3900. Now given this has been such a brawl - especially Naval wise - the numbers are perhaps lower 'relative' to all things ? Are your air losses really high and hurting you ? Do you have air frames in reserve or is "everything that works - flying" ? I mean sweeps with P36's. The Lighting G being perhaps the most capable dependable airframe in ops - wow. Plus being on the doorstep of Okinawa Plus being on the doorstep of Okinawa and you "just got" Corsairs (not even F4U) and 25- D1s Plus you do not even have an Essex class in theater yet - she is another Month and a half away. Feb 17-18, 1943 A quieter few turns. the situation in Manchuria is still a bit fluid with IJA troops flooding South and West. Another attack near Yinkow along the West coast fails but gets. bit closer and does some damage. I need better tanks here. The Allies begin to solidify the remaining captured bases as engineers get going. The IJN keeps at it though. More bombardments. The Japanese are heavily overstacked at Yenki right now meaning Soviet bombardments are doing well and his supply is undoubtedly suffering. At this point there are a lot of airframes the Allies never consider using because they don't have much intense fighting through 42. The P-43, P-36 and the Vanguards are very useful. I'm using Bolos, B-10, Hudsons, Vindicators, and anything else I get my hands on. There are even some Wirraways and Ansons in action. Now there are enough Wildcats, an abundance of P-40K and there are four P-38 groups of different varieties including the remaining Es. I'm filling out 4E groups and letting all of the 2Es loose as the new 25s enter service. quote: I mean sweeps with P36's. Wow The most surprising part to me is the ability to wipe China by now. The China Expeditionary Army is tough, and large. The Chinese troop numbers with the combined Allied firepower and supply is devastating even in 42 before all of the device upgrades. I also realize that in this war the attrition of Japanese ships is a killer. There is no time for him to repair, to upgrade, etc. Every battle takes ships out that he needs to keep the flood tide back and the Allies just slowly add more. I'm also suffering for working hulls, but nothing like the IJN.

Feb 19-20, 1943 Sweeps and a 4E strike hit Amami-Oshima on the 19th. This is only a level 1 airfield and so I'd like to keep it that way. Only Rufe's were providing CAP. I'll visit periodically. There are a few other islands I'll bomb to inhibit all kinds of building. Some more decent sweeps hit up North. As long as I'm getting positive results and reducing his trained pilots I'll keep this up. It puts a lot of strain on his higher service airframes and his supply for replenishing them as well. Against Japan it's all about the economy. I probably should just torch all of the Manchuian industry too but it doesn't generate VPs so I don't want to "spend" 4Es on that task just yet. The 2Es are just about in range and should be able to handle it. On the 20th, somehow two Soviet infantry units snuck behind Japanese lines to launch a Shock attack on Shikuka!! A Japanese division is sitting one hex to the North at the border, but only a naval guard was here and it was sent packing in short order. This time I'd like to keep this base. I'm sending in the ID from Okha, and marching to cut off the IJA ID if possible. I'll bomb to slow it down. The east coast of Korea is the better coast, what with some good scenic beaches up toward the north with a lot of pines along the beach. The important thing is I have expat buddies brewing at two breweries along that coast (one in Sokcho, the other in Gangneung, which hosted all the indoor Winter Olympic events). If you remember your Korean War history (i.e. Inchon Landing), the west coast has quite extreme tides with huge mudflats, so I'd say it's less scenic. The south coast has a lot of islands. Here is a map of the Central Pacific. Hopefully the TFs will continue undetected until very close to Marcus. I'll send the Marcus invasion in and move quickly toward Paga. Simultaneously a Guam invasion will head in from the West supported by the USN CVs. Subs are patrolling the approaches from the North. About 20 altogether. Hopefully they and the pickets can tip off if the KB flanks in. It's so close to the HI it could be dicey. I've also got Marines and better Allied tanks on the way from China. I think Kirin is also available now and I'd like that as another close in airbase for the Il-2. Against the computer, I like to use up all of the earlier aircraft that I can since it just helps to keep from using up all of your better aircraft so your pools are too shallow.

Sure. And at this point the Japanese still have to fly a lot of A6M variants, some early Oscars, and have only limited 2nd Gen fighters. The P-40E, F4F-4, P-39D, P-43, P-66, and Hurricane IIc are all good against 1st Gen and can compete with 2nd Gen in the right configurations and with good pilots. I won't be sweeping with P-40E or P-39D most of the time, but Lancers have been great in that role.

If you haven't played many Allied games into the late war phase, I recently learned something worth sharing. Upon receiving the SBC-5 Helldiver, I promptly upgraded every last fleet CV squadron flying SBC-4s (which was the majority of the dive bomber squadron because SBD-5 and SBD-6 production is not sufficient) and found that I had completely run out of SBC-5's because the production stopped well before the war ended. I ended up downgrading over half of the SBC-5 squadrons back to SBC-4s, which were way more plentiful than the SBC-5s. I think any experienced Allied player works the aircraft pools by selectively upgrading, while retaining some squadrons with older models. Just because a plane is an older model doesn't mean it isn't a viable aircraft that should be used until its pools are depleted.

The Devastators will most likely not be used again, but many worse planes flying for other nations will be in the mix just because there isn't an alternative that's around in enough numbers. I will even use the British Buffalos if I have to, but luckily there are enough Hurris to go around for now.

I like to use the Devastators with 4 bombs on transports and the Buffaloes are good on high CAP - at least against the computer. Of course, with the Buffaloes, they need numbers and a few Hurris flying 5k lower helps. So do a few P-40s help - the B model is better defensively than the E model but the B model does not have as many .50 cals.

I thought that you wanted the most maneuverable lower since they can dodge the bounce better. But the Buffs at 20k with the Hurris at 15k when the enemy comes in at 10-15k. [:D]

[:D] At 15K you are right, but if the CAP is patrolling against sweeps above 25K, I think the Hurris retain their maneuverability better than most other aircraft. They seem to do well against Tojos at altitude.

This was against Oscars and Zeros escorting Nells and Sallies from Singapore over Palembang. As long as I had a numerical edge, things were great. The AI did not sweep very much. The Sallies would fly higher than the Nells.
