Slick91 -> Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/11/2017 5:24:26 PM)

I just completed a new install (WitW + Torch) and updated to the latest version. The game loaded fine at first (default windowed screen).

I then switched to full screen (in the game's parameters) and restated the game. Now I get a black screen and hear the menu music playing in the background.

Is there any way I can reset the parameters?

Or, is anyone else having the same issue?

System specs:
Asus ROG G752VT laptop
Windows 10 Home (1703-Creators Update)
NVidia GeForce GTX 970M (driver version 381.65)

zakblood -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/11/2017 5:36:11 PM)

did you also install all of the prerequisites needed for the game?

[image]local://upfiles/43185/3B00220FC2034119B6F0785BB09928A5.jpg[/image]

as the game won't work on windows 10 without them

What is the version you are running?

iirc, starting videos may not be play well in full screen mode, but playback should be disabled automatically in one of the updates.

Can you try to rename "video" folder to "novideo" and restart a game?

Slick91 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/11/2017 5:42:30 PM)

Zakblood, All prereq's were installed. The game ran fine until I switched it to run in fullscreen mode.

Helpless, I'll try the folder rename and see what happens.

I was hoping there was a certain configuration (.cfg) file that I could just edit/delete to get the game back into windowed mode.

zakblood -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/11/2017 5:53:17 PM)

no sorry none that i know of[:(]

Delete/rename dat\save\wirpref.dat file to reset preferences to default.

SWEET!!! I'll give that a shot and see what happens...

That worked and I was able to reset it to windowed mode. However, setting it again to fullscreen gave me the black screen again.

I ran the application in Windows 8 compatibility mode and it runs fine in fullscreen mode now.

I have no idea if it was the new Creators Update for Windows 10 that broke it or Nividia drivers (same issue with the 381.xx and 382.05 drivers).

Slick91 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/11/2017 11:30:27 PM)

FIXED!!!

I can confirm this was due to NVidia drivers. I reverted back to driver version 376.33 and this works fine with NO compatibility mode.

On a side note, I was suffering horrible stutter issues with 3D games. Rolling back the driver also fixed those issues as well.

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/12/2017 6:47:41 AM)

Glad you fixed it. I'm staying on old (stable) version of nVidia for some time already. Will experiment to see if anything could be done from game side, which is highly unlikely.

Thanks for the report.

Just an update to say the problem still exists on NVidia's last driver update: 382.33

I'll stay on 376.33 as I know it works on that version. I think its broken on version 381.## and 382.##.

FYI, my laptop is an ASUS ROG G752VT-DH72 (GeForce 970M) and I'm displaying to a AOC GSync 144hz monitor.

ezz91 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (5/28/2017 11:09:02 AM)

Hi, I think that this very annoying bug is neither nVidia's nor the specific graphics card manufacturer's fault, since it happens with AMD graphics too, at least since the 16.12.x driver version. It happened on my old system (HP OEM desktop with a Gigabyte R7 260X graphics card and Intel i5 650 CPU) as well as on my brand new system (MSI RX 480 Armor 8G GPU, AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU). I can send a developer my DxDiag, if that can help fix the issue. Thanks for pointing out how to reset windowed mode, though.

Joel Billings -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/1/2017 4:50:15 PM)

Was your problem also only in Full Screen mode?

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/1/2017 6:33:58 PM)

It must be an issue with latest drivers and/or Win10 update. I've got it replicated with 382.33 NVidia driver and it started to work again when rolled back to 372.

FWIW, core DX9-based game engine code hasn't been changed for ages.

ezz91 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/3/2017 4:39:44 PM)

Yes, only in Full Screen mode, windowed works perfectly. I forgot to say that I'm using the latest beta (1.0.1.59).

HAWK7 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/6/2017 8:05:42 PM)

Have the same problem only with fullscreen. I have AMD gpu.

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/6/2017 8:06:23 PM)

can you post your dxdiag?

HAWK7 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/7/2017 4:01:36 PM)

Sure, here you go.

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/7/2017 6:03:27 PM)

Thanks.

zakblood -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/7/2017 6:26:53 PM)

as you more than likely have already spotted, he's using a dual GPU display

Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family

Hybrid Graphics GPU: Integrated on the cpu

Display Memory: 2160 MB
Dedicated Memory: 112 MB
Shared Memory: 2048 MB

plus a secondary

Card name: AMD Radeon R9 200 / HD 7900 Series dedi card
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Display Memory: 11183 MB
Dedicated Memory: 3053 MB
Shared Memory: 8129 MB
Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

my advice is see which one is the main one the game and O/S is using or defaulting to

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and locate Manage 3D Settings. Change, in both Global and Program, the Preferred Graphics Processor to High Performance NVIDIA Processor.

Check if Nvidia is set as the preferred graphic card:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/infraworks-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-force-your-laptop-to-Run-with-Graphics-Processor-vs-the-default-Integrated-Graphics-for-InfraWorks.html

as per guides and see if that makes any difference

HAWK7 -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/7/2017 7:11:06 PM)

Do the dxdiag for youself. If you have an Intel CPU from the past 7 years you will get similar results.

My display is connected to the dedicated GPU port and the integrated intel gpu gets deactivated by default. My dedicated GPU gets used everywhere otherwise I could not play performance demanding games on high settings.

This problem occures on both AMD and NVIDIA hardware.

Your advice (which I personaly think is useless) refers to NVIDIA hardware, which I do not have.

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (6/7/2017 8:44:07 PM)

So far it looks as something introduced with Win10 CE full screen optimization code.

sorry posted wrong link, i have one (tech support links) for both Nvidia and AMD for dual GPU use, but will now stay out of it, as you are getting staff help anyway and seem more than unhappy with others offering advice, namely me so i'll withdraw and keep my nose out where it's not wanted[:(]

MarechalJoffre -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (8/3/2017 6:09:35 PM)

I am having the same issue, running it on Win 8 compatibility have solved it for me.

Helpless -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (8/3/2017 6:57:29 PM)

Thanks for the info.

I've *seen* somewhere that similar issues have been solved with newest nVidia drivers. Haven't checked myself yet.

VPaulus -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (8/4/2017 1:16:41 AM)

I've installed the last Nvidia drivers (384.94 ) and set the compatibility to Windows 8 and the game now works in full screen. [:)]

Rosseau -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (8/4/2017 1:58:42 AM)

Same problem on Win 10 with Nvidia 3.82.05.

Haven't had an issue with this series since the night WitE was released. What the heck changed?

I've got 500+ games that work fine. Well, I hope they work fine. Not like we had a choice with MS Creative. I'm still trying to get rid of that Cortana b**** [8|]

Two things, Windows 10 Creators edition and Nvidia drivers. Like I've posted in my previous post, update your Nvidia drivers and ensure you set the compatibility to Windows 8. Make sure that "Override high DPI scaling behavior" and "Disable Fullscreen optimizations" are ticked off.

Same blackout issue here. Setting to Win8 compatibility also worked for me.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Fullscreen nothing but black and music (8/4/2017 4:54:52 PM)

I have seen a few games lock up at the start if you load Nvidia drivers and also load in the VR drivers without having VR hardware. You can uninstall the driver and do a custom install and choose not to add in the extra VR stuff and see if that helps.
