Here's today's entry:

ETA: Let it never be said that I won't post pictures of cargo planes and other 'grunt' type haulers like P-3s.

P-3's ,haul. Bombs, torpedoes, rockets and missiles. In short , P-3's haul only death for subs and skimmers. [:D]

And rubber dog**** out of Hong Kong?

No. Wait. That was the idle threat imposed upon Goose and Maverick, wasn't it?

[image]local://upfiles/6968/E4B1ED2376A7490AB0C82C907A8DB575.jpg[/image]

According to the Duffle bog it wasn't an idle threat. In Top Gun 2 he plays a cashiered Navy officer who as a civilian charter flies rubber dogshit out of a factory in HK. :) Just sayin' . [:D]

Thanks for the clarification. The Buzz is intriguing, maybe the pilots' name or nickname.

I can be cruel can't I?

Anyway, a Pacific theatre warship which I'm fairly certain does not appear in the War in the Pacific scenarios. Three guesses for three names to choose from, of which two names do appear in the WitP scenarios, just on different ships.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 11:22:47 AM)

USS Rochester.

Chickenboy -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 2:44:52 PM)

Here's today's "official" name that plane/ship contestant:

A 'three parter':

1. Name the Japanese plane in the foreground.

2. Name the fighter below it in the case underneath (the one my camera focused on [8|]).

3. Name the bomber type aircraft in the lower right.

Chickenboy -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 2:45:50 PM)

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 3:31:07 PM)

A "Lily", P-35A and a B-17C.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 3:32:47 PM)

AKA type 99.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 3:34:03 PM)

AKA KI-48.

Hai! Aye. And NO.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/5/2017 8:38:53 PM)

Then it's a B-17D. The only difference is the cheek guns (not visible from the photo) and internal differences.

I'll go with Mysteryplane14.jpg.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/6/2017 6:11:12 PM)

AD-2 Skyshark.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/6/2017 6:12:41 PM)

The model number is on the lower fuselage. Able Dog -2 (Skyraider was AD-1) . Attack aircraft design by Douglas , 2nd design.

Technically, it's an A2D-1 Skyshark, but I'll give you credit. Because I'm nice that way. [8D]

Bonus aircraft for the day:

How about this one, Mr. Smarty Pants? [;)]

No, your wrong. Here's why. I gave you the OLD NAVY STYLE of aircraft designation. A2D is the NEW system of designation , AKA "The McNamara system". The aircraft in system was ordered in 1945 , delivered in 1950 and tested around the same period. The NEW system (combined service ) made it's entry some time after the Kennedy administration took office , that is sometime after 1960. An example of this , the 1st plane I was trained on was the Lockheed P-3a. But it was ordered as the P3V1 . The production plates (AKA acceptance plates) in the cockpit said P-3A. But Lockheed got caught short with little notice , so little bits of the aircraft still had the OLD designation. Like the ASH- receivers (ash trays, we still had them). All showed a P-3 taking off, with the designation P3V proudly emblazoned.

So while the MODEL might say A2D , and the one in the Museum in San Diego says A2A (I've seen it , the original designation was AD-2. The Douglas skyRaider , known in Vietnam as the A-1 , and previously as the AD-1. The pilots would say they flew "Able Dogs" which were VERY able.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/6/2017 7:15:49 PM)

That new plane is a Fireball. I don't recall the designation (which is generally the ONLY part I need to look up) but since it was built by Ryan , I'll go with either FR-1 or a F1R designation.

AW1Steve -> RE: OT: Name that plane / ship (7/6/2017 7:23:41 PM)

The version you are showing is the XFR-2 which had a new engine installed. There would be other versions up to XFR-4. The had changes including tails, flaps, vents and even weirdly enough , a lot more rivets. No matter. It was still a dog.
