Joel Billings -> Strategic Map Preview (5/14/2003 1:39:15 AM)

Here's the strategic map as of December 7, 1941.

Feinder -> (5/14/2003 2:11:50 AM)

Sweet!

You can see poor lil' ol' Wake island sitting right in the middle of the map with a big "CAPTURE ME FIRST" sign over it!

-F-

Zakhal -> (5/14/2003 2:32:35 AM)

Looking good boys, looking good!

pasternakski -> (5/14/2003 5:32:18 AM)

I think I see weather zones at work. Hot, diggity dog!

Platoonist -> (5/14/2003 7:03:53 AM)

Ahhhh. Cartography can be art.:)

Zigfreid -> (5/14/2003 7:14:43 AM)

Very cool.:cool:

Aussie -> (5/14/2003 7:22:27 AM)

Great work!

I work with maps and spatial data as part of being a GIS analyst, so if you developement people need any assistance, I would be glad to help.

Keep it up

Platoonist -> (5/14/2003 8:47:31 AM)

I was looking at that vast expanse of arctic polar cap and wondering.....

...are U.S.C.G. Wind class icebreakers included in the game?

:D Just kidding! Wargamers....such a difficult lot to satisfy.

BTW the map makes great computer wallpaper.

brent_2 -> (5/14/2003 9:24:30 AM)

oooooo

aleutian island campaign coming up!

stretch -> (5/14/2003 10:06:02 AM)

Outstanding.

Chiteng -> (5/14/2003 10:45:30 AM)

Tokyo really is the center of the world =)

Fred98 -> (5/14/2003 1:08:48 PM)

Wow looks very nice. I am happy there is a “strategic map”

I wonder about the lines dividing up the map.

I also note the sheer number of bases and wonder how I can possibly keep track of them all.

As for the short scenarios, I would hope they are played on separate maps. To take the full map and make some areas unplayable is just not the same.

Don't know what you are looking for in separate maps. The smaller scenarios are played on portions of the big map.

Apollo11 -> Question for Joel... (5/14/2003 8:24:27 PM)

Hi all,

Joel, how come you decided to "turn map around" (i.e. that
north is not up on map)?

Was that a problem?

Probably would have had to make the map bigger wit a lot more wasted space. Right now it seems that the map has to fit diagonally, so to speak, in the area in order to get Oz and the West Coast of the U.S.

If you turned the map with north at the top you would have to have a rectangle with the long sides running north/south - which is not how your monitor is laid out.

Or something like that...

I am periodically wiping the drool from my mouth. Whatever the price, I'll pay. Please don't take advantage of those who lack the willpower.

FLASH -

Matrix Games and 2by3 Games today announced that the upcoming release of War in the Pacific, a strategic look at the Pacific conflict in World War 2 will be available online and in stores for the price of $250.

When asked to respond to the pricetag, Matrix and 2by3 staff said simply, "We knew they'd pay. They always pay. They're sick in the head with these games. Something about amazing detail and accuracy in games makes these people crazed with a desire to spend..."

It is like a (put name of ethnic group here) auction. If I could get the game (in as good a shape as it will be when released) today I would shell out the $250. But if I couldn't get it until tomorrow I wouldn't pay a penny over $249 - and so on.;)

Subchaser -> The voice of absolute minority (5/20/2003 4:32:04 AM)

I also want to say I like this map but I can’t. I see some serious inaccuracies on this map. Are you sure that Australia is six times larger than India? Australia covers 2,966,368 square miles, India covers 1,269,346 square miles, Australia is only 2,34 times larger than India but not 6 times as on this map.

Can you please explain the reasons you have done the map this way?

The problem is Mercator's disease. No matter how you try to project a round object onto a flat surface, distortions will occur.

I'm sure the proportioning decisions were rationally made. One thing the creator of a strategic wargame map treating primarily air and naval warfare must face is equalization of distances calculated in real-life observation on the actual terrestrial globe. Also, areas that are not central to what will likely be the primary theaters can absorb some of the needed distortion while the projected "hot spots" are crafted with more precision.

Subchaser -> (5/20/2003 5:12:50 AM)

Thanks for clarification pasternakski

Anyway I’m doomed to buy this game even if this map will be replaced with map of moon (with accurate one, of course) :).

The dividing lines are for allowing you to select which areas to let the AI control while you concentrate on the ones you want.

Not to mention calculating the correct angle of dangle.
