geofflambert -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 12:50:30 AM)

Generally, when one speaks of freedom, one is speaking about their own freedom, not that of others.

witpqs -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 2:49:25 AM)

crsutton: Do I have the attribution correct?

quote:

"Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile. I was puzzled why the Chilean people seemed so content with Pinochet and his abuses of power. I, being somewhat of an idealist, said that it seemed to me that the disposed president Allende had so much more to offer the Chilean people. Her answer was simple enough. She said that under Allende everyone had personal freedoms that they had not seen in decades. But of course there was never any food on the table. Under Pinochet there was repression and less personal freedom but there was plenty of food. She told me that only a person who had never experienced real hunger could think that freedom was the most important thing in the world. It was indeed hard for me to relate, having always had plenty to eat." - CR Sutton, 2011

I keep notable quotations for myself. Some samples:
quote:

"We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us. Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls." - Joseph Campbell

quote:

"You should, in science, believe logic and arguments, carefully drawn, and not authorities." — Richard Feynman

quote:

"When words lose their meaning, people lose their liberty." - Confucius

quote:

"One of the painfully sobering realizations that come from reading history is the utter incompetence that is possible among leaders of whole nations and empires -- and the blind faith that such leaders can nevertheless inspire among the people who are enthralled by their words or their posturing." - Thomas Sowell

quote:

"Respect those who seek the truth, be wary of those who claim to have found it." - Mark Twain

BBfanboy -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 5:22:22 AM)

In the thread that has CRSutton's post about that conversation, there is some discussion just above it in which Nemo explains his choice of Avatar as a nod toward defending true freedom. A lot of what he says makes a lot of sense in today's messed up world! Unfortunately the masses love their comforting ignorance too much and let others do the thinking for them.

Canoerebel -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 5:24:43 AM)

There you go.

Also: "The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." - Mark Twain, 1888

KenchiSulla -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 8:52:10 AM)

So many people are frustrated because they seemingly can't influence events in life and the world. Peace of mind, in my mind, comes from working on stuff I can influence...

I hate worrying

"worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum"

The girl was based.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Trugrit -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 1:42:20 PM)

Sorry, but I have lost the point of this thread.

What is this thread about ?

Multiple choice:

1. If you want to know which is more important food or freedom you should ask a prostitute?

2. crsutton wanted to talk to a prostitute about politics, food and freedom instead of sex?

3. Surprisingly, a prostitute wanted to talk to crsutton about politics, food and freedom instead of sex?

4. There are prostitutes in Chile who are experts when it comes to politics, food, freedom and sex and forum members should take advantage of that vast knowledge?

6. The masses love their ignorance too much to ask a prostitute about freedom?

7. A prostitute knows the difference between a lightning bug and lightning?

8. Prostitutes are not worried about food and freedom because they can chew gum and do algebra equations at the same time?

9. The girl, we assume it was the prostitute, was based in Chile or maybe was biased towards food?

10. Maslow knows what prostitutes need?

Yaab -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/2/2017 2:04:48 PM)

Crsutton must have had some special powers to travel off-map.

In Chile, I've heard of "in a hot tub" or a "in vat of wine".... "Kinky Baby!"...."Oh behave".

There are places where hot peppers should not go!

O the danger of getting stuck off-map.....

If a prostitute read Maslow, what kind of food would she ask to be paid in?

On hunger?

The simplest explanation is a typo - biased came out "based".

To clarify hear, I presume you refer to CR Sutton, not Canoerebel (sometimes referred to as CR).

If you are off-map with a prostitute in Chile, do you have to go to Santiago to withdraw?

That's what I went with; and thank you Yaab for the alternative. [8D]

Poor Ross isn't participating in this madhouse of good fun.

I hope the legendary status of his saying doesn't grate on his nerves now or wear out his patience. It truly was an epic and funny statement, and from one of the nicest forumites around. So if this does irk him, I apologize and I'll try to remember not to bring the matter up again and to not contribute to its perpetuation now.

I don't want to know the penalty for not withdrawing.

Actually, I was misquoted.. It was a Yale educated nun that I was speaking with. Must have been a typo somewhere that gave Dan the wrong impression.

Seriously, I think it is a wonderful story-quotation with genuine wisdom and perspective. I suspect she was wiser than many Yale educated males/females.

I have a immaculate conception of it.

Joe D. -> RE: crustton: "Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile" (9/4/2017 11:09:33 AM)

While peacekeeping in Bosnia more than a decade ago, one of our local tour guides asked me what good is freedom if you don't have any money?

Back then the Bosnian Convertible Marka was practically worthless, and probably still is.
