Grognard1812 -> RE: Soviet GT 12 (12/2/2017 12:59:28 AM)

A defensive line south and east of the lower Don river was established near the city of Rostov. Three high morale
units were placed in Rostov, and a large number of air units were transferred to the area.

Should be an interesting Game turn 13.

Soviet GT 12

Recon missions showed that the Luftwaffe had placed a number of airbases 2 to 3 hexes west of Moscow with about 200
Messerschmitt fighters, and another 100 fighters about 10 hexes further west. It appears that the Luftwaffe
was attempting to intercept any attempts by the Soviet air force to airdrop supplies to the isolated units in
Moscow. The Soviet air force had about 1300 fighter and fighter bombers in airbases just east of Moscow. In an
attempt to overwhelm with numbers the intercepting German fighters, over 20 air transport of supply missions
were conducted by the Soviet air force using about 10 - 20 bombers in each mission (only selecting one bomber
air group) with 50 to 100 fighters / fighter bombers escorting. Few bombers were lost and the units in Moscow
were air dropped supplies removing them out of an isolated status.

An airfield bombing mission was then attempted against the Luftwaffe airbases just west of Moscow, but even
with fighter escort half the Soviet bombers were lost.

Hmmmmmm, interesting note that you have one blue counter on the whole map, the tank Division. So you have all of your units either directly connected to Stavka or attached to HQs attacked to Stavka? Or you just turned off all color and made everyone white? Basically I'm curious what you have going on here ;-)

The Air HQ for all the Soviet airbases east of Moscow is the Long Range Air Command which is attached to STAVKA,
and almost all the Army HQs in the area are also attached to STAVKA. Not always but sometimes the air units
provide ground support to the ground units. Defensively since I have the fighter interception level at 300%
they usually intercept any Luftwaffe air missions in the area.

The soviets have done multiple supply drops to Moscow and Stalino, costing 559 planes for 22 fighters. For some reason my fighters around Stalino did little but the Moscow Luftwaffe were busy. His air force is split three ways between Moscow, Voronezh and Rostov.

I need to make new plans for the remains of the '41 campaign.
Objective must be to take as many cities as possible before the blizzard.
There is mud predicted for South and Central.

AGN. There is not much up here, only Cherepovets within striking distance and there is a lot of swamp. Will maintain some pressure with the Finns.

AGC. Perhaps 3 cities available North/East of Moscow. Will continue to assault Moscow.

AGS. There are 4 cities around the Voronezh area, and most of my armour is here.
Will revert to crossing the Don above Rostov, may have mud here next turn so nothing will happen then. I should be able to take Rostov in the time available.

tyronec -> RE: T13 (12/3/2017 2:15:47 PM)

City assaults progress, Stalino is taken and only one hex left each at Moscow and Leningrad.
31 units destroyed. VPs are at 231.
We move all the Pioneers out of the Leningrad assault force and the LBs out of AGS where mud is expected next turn.
About half my armour is collecting around Moscow ready to attack East and do three HQBs (had only done two to date for the whole game). The rest is near Voronezh and Stalino.

The attacks on Moscow, Stalino and the Don river (which I couldn't follow up for shortage of movement points).

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 13 (12/4/2017 12:44:59 AM)

Soviet GT 13

The defensive line in the Voronezh area at the end of GT 13. Awaiting the inevitable Axis assault to try to
take Voronezh - hopefully the city will hold out 4 more turns until the mud season arrives.

Grognard1812 -> RE: Soviet GT 13 (12/4/2017 12:50:51 AM)

The defensive line south and east of the Lower River Don near Rostov. Again hopefully Rostov can remain in
Soviet control for another 4 turns until the mud season arrives.

Grognard1812 -> GT 13 Air War (12/4/2017 1:07:31 AM)

Was able to re-supply the isolated units in Moscow by sending only one level bomber air group unit at
a time, each mission escorted by about 50 or more fighters and fighter bombers, bypassing the Luftwaffe's attempt
to air blockade Moscow. Relatively light air losses during Soviet game turn 13.

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 13 (12/4/2017 1:16:11 AM)

Hopefully the weather forecast is accurate and there will be an early Rasputitsa - mud season this year, delaying
the Axis attack on Rostov by a turn.

SparkleyTits -> RE: Soviet GT 13 (12/4/2017 1:51:02 AM)

That mud could be a nice help at Rostov

My prayers are with you for voronezh

topeverest -> RE: Soviet GT 13 (12/4/2017 2:21:29 AM)

This looks very desperate from a Russian perspective in 42.

tyronec -> T14 (12/4/2017 2:24:21 PM)

T14
Mud in the central zone, predicted mud in the south did not happen.

AGN. Leningrad is saved by the mud. Soviets are retreating in front of the Finns so we will follow up.

AGN. Moscow has been resupplied. Will start assaulting the last hex though don't expect to take it too quickly. To the East we will press the advance towards Vladimir and Ivanovo. Did three HQBs but most of them have only around 100% fuel.

AGS. We will work to get across the river north of Voronezh. May not even get an attack in this turn but if not at least some of 6th Army can rest - fatigue levels are up to 80%.

At Rostov would hope to get a couple of divisions across the river and bring up PG1 ready for next turn.

The air war has been quiet, 151 for 11 in the Soviet turn, mostly resupplying Moscow.

tyronec -> RE: T14 (12/4/2017 2:25:45 PM)

AGC. We make three attacks (shown below) into the defensive line which all win, am through the strongest fortifications. Have also crossed the river to the North. A tricky situation for the Soviets, will see if they work to hold the line or fall back. Two HQBs ready to support the assault next turn.
The two attacks on Moscow fail.
Had ground support ON and most of my bombers on Night, air losses are around 350 for 20 for these five battles.

AGS. Voronezh we are in position to attack next turn. At Rostov the Don is crossed by two infantry divisions; though they may get counter attacked. We do an HQB for next turn.

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 14 (12/5/2017 1:42:32 AM)

Soviet GT 14

Unfortunately the weather forecast didn't hold and even though mud was forecast for the Rostov area, the weather
was clear instead. The Axis successfully attacked across the Don river just east of Rostov and set up a bridgehead
comprising of 2 German divisions on the Southern bank. A dangerous situation.

[image]local://upfiles/56401/C5283045E32F408C96B9D0A0274E40C4.jpg[/image]

Grognard1812 -> RE: Soviet GT 14 (12/5/2017 1:49:57 AM)

Under the determined leadership of General Zhukov, a counterattack on the bridgehead was attempted led by
the 1st Guards Rifle Division. It was successful and the two German divisions were forced to retreat back across
the river. Rostov is safe for one more turn.

Grognard1812 -> GT 14 Air War (12/5/2017 1:55:56 AM)

The Luftwaffe based most of their air units in the Moscow area.

The Soviet air force conducted multiple airfield bombing missions but loses were heavy.

On one mission the Soviet air force lost 82 planes for the loss of only 4 by the Luftwaffe.

Grognard1812 -> RE: GT 14 Air War (12/5/2017 2:05:07 AM)

The Luftwaffe lost 61 Messerschmitt fighters (four weeks worth of German fighter production) during GT 14,
but Soviet air loses were heavy.

Stelteck -> RE: GT 14 Air War (12/5/2017 8:22:12 AM)

Zukov is really epic good. I never used him as army commander, i should have done that.

Twigster -> RE: GT 14 Air War (12/5/2017 1:27:38 PM)

Yesterday, I noted that thedoctorking had Zhukov commanding 3 Army in front of Moscow... interesting that it is not standard practice.

Still looking really bleak for the Soviets here.

tyronec -> T15 (12/6/2017 7:33:32 AM)

T15.
Weather clear.

Should hopefully finish off Leningrad this turn.
Can get a couple of assaults on Moscow.
The Soviets have retreated to the East of Moscow, will follow up and attack.
At Voronezh will try and assault across the river and make a bridgehead.
At Rostov my bridgehead has been pushed back and a couple of Cavalry units are visiting our side of the river. Can hopefully make a successful attack across the Don though not sure if my armour has enough MPs to get across.

Air war. Soviets have carried out some 100 or so bombings around Moscow and I lose 61 fighters for 719 aircraft. Have enough in the pool to cover this for now. Not too many supplies got through to Moscow. We will rest the Luftwaffe fighters for the rest of the turn.

tyronec -> RE: T15 (12/6/2017 7:34:11 AM)

Leningrad falls.
Moscow survives two more attacks but should fall next turn as the defenders are ground down.
East of Moscow we follow up, crossing the Volga to the North. Just South of Vladmir I find a weak spot and advance 5 hexes. Two more HQBs for next turn.
The defences at Voronezh are strong so we attack further north and get across the river. Also have attack coming down from further North in the gap between the rivers.
At Rostov we fight our way across the river at the same spot and this time get three Pz. Divisions into the bridgehead. However there are strong Soviet forces and it will be heavy going for the next few turns

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 15 (12/7/2017 1:52:08 AM)

Soviet GT 15

The Axis pushed across 3 panzer divisions south of the Don, near Rostov. General Zhukov has been ordered to set up
a defensive area around the panzer bridgehead to prevent it from expanding and threatening Rostov.

Grognard1812 -> RE: Soviet GT 15 (12/7/2017 1:55:34 AM)

Deep defensive zones have been established in the Voronezh area.

tyronec -> T16 (12/7/2017 7:54:36 AM)

T16.
Mud stops all attacks north of Voronezh. Not good as had prospects of breaking out to the north east of Moscow and that chance may well be gone, so a significant intervention by the weather gods. The attack around Voronezh is also halted. Moscow also gets a reprieve which blocks the FBD.

tyronec -> RE: T16 (12/7/2017 7:55:27 AM)

At Rostov it take six attacks to clear another hex across the river, which we occupy with three more armoured divisions. Am not at all sure if it is worthwhile continuing the attack here as expect even if I take Rostov it will be recaptured in the Blizzard. Perhaps depends on what weather turns up over the coming few turns.

It looks to me like the supply mod in the latest patch is making a difference, am getting around 30% fuel for panzer divisions within 150 miles of the railhead. Can anyone say what it used to be with the previous patch ?

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 16 (12/8/2017 7:56:23 PM)

Soviet GT 16

Mud, mud, mud everywhere in the Northern Soviet Weather Zone.

As the weather forecast was for clear weather, fate was kind on GT 16 to the Red Army.

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 16 (12/8/2017 8:01:24 PM)

The Axis pushed across another panzer corps of units comprising of two motorized divisions and a panzer division
south of the river Don near Rostov. General Zhukov was called upon again to stabilize the situation. An attack
was planned against the hex with an estimated defense value of 42.

[image]local://upfiles/56401/7F82B5A9E5E34B0D8C1751C1F876CD2A.jpg[/image]

Grognard1812 -> Soviet GT 16 (12/8/2017 8:11:07 PM)

Before the main assault two bomb unit missions were conducted followed by 3 separate single division attacks,
which reduced the estimated defense value of the stack to 38.

Then General Zhukov led a 12 division attack (including 7 of the best infantry divisions in the Soviet army) which
succeeded in retreating the 3 German divisions back across the river, slowing the Axis assault on Rostov.

Hopefully Rostov is safe until the snow turns.

Yup, Zhukov is a beast. I love using him for attacks like this. :)

This was a significant setback for the AGS, probably balances out some of the luck I had with a couple of fortunate results a few turns ago.
IMO Zhukov is historically not the best Soviet leader and over rated in the game, however much like the 'top' British general good at self promotion.

Which generals do you rate higher?
I am a vasilevksy fan but I am not really an expert on this topic.
Even higher I rate marshal tuchatchevsky, but unfortunately he was executed in the 1930s purges. I believe he could have made life very difficult for the Germans.
