It seems the patron saint of butt kicking has failed us. Overcast for tomorrow. We have more than 240 B-29's ready and 75 P-38's ready to sweep.

What do you think?

Bomb something, no rest for the defense.

Awaiting the next turn:

• Madioen just surrendered, and we have only a Bde at Malang against more than 28,000 enemy in Soerabaja. they must have very little combat power.

• Landing tomorrow at Balikpapan.

• Going to arrange to insert more forces onto Java on the cheap and see how much we can get done that way. Actual amphibious ops likely won't be needed.

• Aside from the fighter sweeps, the strikes on Hamamatsu went quite well. I was worried about flak at 10,000 ft but there was very little. Could that have been the result of the cloud cover?

• The B-29 crews will rest and the aircraft repair.

• The P-38 sweepers will also rest a day and then sweep somewhere. They can't reach many bases, but P-51D squadrons are getting ready plus we are bringing more air support to Iwo-jima.

• I am considering one day to rest the crews and then make a night Manpower attack on the same target.

• The Chichi-jima invasion forces are loading and some are already loaded. With only ~8,000 troops there now we will leave one of the Rgts behind, giving us a division, two Rgts, lots of artillery, and some other units. Still overkill.

Complete combat report attached.

RangerJoe -> RE: 1944 November 22 (8/2/2021 5:26:47 PM)

Maybe next time, have a bomber unit attack the airbase - maybe even the night before - as well as the port. The port can also get your fuel hits.

You also may not have to sweep so high, then the fighters might get there before the bombers.

BBfanboy -> RE: 1944 November 22 (8/2/2021 6:08:15 PM)

You got a lot of hits on his Ha-45 engine factories - worth the loss of B-29s IMO.

I think the light flak at 10K had more to do with the Japanese not having a really good mid-altitude machine-cannon. IIRC, the 25mm tops out at 8K feet. Most of the heavy AA is likely in the big cities.

We have stayed away from base (port-airfield) air strikes at night because they seem over-powered too often, so I won't go there.

I agree, I'm very happy with the results.

In other areas I've settled on 8,000 ft as a good 4EB altitude. If the base turns out to have good flak, 12,000 ft. Truk was murdering 4EB even then, so I adjusted to 20,000 ft and even 22,000 ft.

I'm not so well informed about the flak Japan has in the game, but I've learned that they do get at least some of the good stuff, it just depends on where they have it.

witpqs -> RE: 1944 November 22 (8/2/2021 9:13:29 PM)

The staff messed up. The B-29 groups flying from Saipan went in at 5,000 ft. In daylight! They suffered more from flak than the rest but not so bad, actually. Hmm.

Your Strategic Bombing VPs for November 22 and 23 are the same at the beginning of your reports for the two days. The bombing of Hamamatsu that was so effective was on the 22. Shouldn't the Strategic VPs be higher? Or do the results of the bombing take some time to show up in the VP totals?

It bumped on the day of the air strikes (from 2,000 to 2,430). They weren't Manpower strikes so no Fires to cause continuing damage. I was hoping the next day of recon would reveal additional damage, but it didn't. No complaints here, it was a good attack.

Very nice[&o]...notice the CAP settings for the fighters...you can take advantage of that elsewhere during the day.

Overall

• 2,446 strategic points.

• 154x B-29's report ready.

• No carriers or battleships sighted.

• The plan is, as soon as practical, conduct simultaneous land based P-51 and carrier based Corsair fighter sweeps over Tokyo while B-29's make a daylight Manpower raid on the city. I need more air support at Iwo-jima to maximize the number of P-51's that fly from there. I'm hoping to get 150. I get 75 P-38's now but they have two engines so the stacking is different. I'm not sure how many Corsairs I have on the carriers, but all of them will sweep while the Hellcats fly CAP. All of this will take place after the fleet covers the Chichi-jima landings. By then I will have the additional air support in place on Iwo-jima, six squadrons of P-51D will be ready, and of course the fleet will be in the area.

• The pursuit down the peninsula continues. In slow motion.

• The clean up of lower Indochina continues.

• Seemed like a good raid on Hamamatsu, but few reports of damage so far. The crews could use a rest, but they won't get it.

• B-29 target: 154 ready B-29's will strike Manpower at Nagoya tonight, from 5,000 ft. I frequently go for the same Manpower target two nights in a row to maximize fire damage, so perhaps the change of targets will catch some CAP assigned to LRCAP the wrong assets.

• 72x P-38L will sweep Chiba.

Complete combat report attached.

Today's air losses. Without expectation, a group of P-51B sweeping Samah ran into some of the Empires vaunted Ki-83 and shot down between 5 and 10 of them for no loss. I thought they should be somewhere going after B-29's?

• One unit east of Haiphong did not retreat; it has over 8,000 troops we get a shot at tomorrow. At Balikpapan the refinery is intact at 400 and the oil production almost so at 299(1). Production at the refinery had been halted, so fuel on hand is2,496 even though oil on hand is 191,270. Excess oil can be sent to Australia while new production from Samarinda and Balikpapan is refined at Balikpapan.
