Resolution took it on the chin for sure. She is heading for Colombo via Madras. Additional ASW escorts will be sent to meet her.

The results over Akyab were even better than the combat reports indicated. Best of all, these were the best airframes the Empire currently has, no doubt flown by the best pilots.

Search reports the two carrier TF's have about 100 fighters and 100 bombers. The fleet will move 6 hexes west, to a spot 3 hexes from the IJN carriers' current position. From there the fleet will move NE back to Wojte.

We've been holding our own on VP. What will happen with the carrier battle likely to be fought tomorrow?

Yes, but I think it's the number of CV's. That gets inflated very often, and I have sightings on several recent days which are consistent about the number of aircraft. What I'm wondering is if some other enemy carriers are operational and sortied in time to show up tomorrow after our ships were spotted on the move. But this time we have Hellcats.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• A good day.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• CV Essex will pull into Pearl Harbor in 3 days. There are additional escorts there waiting for her.

Pacific

• The subs were there but played a small role. During the movie (I like Moose's lingo for that) I saw an IJN TF far SE or Truk, SW of Ponape I think. Could that be more carriers coming to reinforce the group engaged today? Too late!

• Narrative contains spoilers.

North of the Marshalls there is at least one carrier TF, but quite possibly two as it looked like air strikes harried our destroyers from two vectors (one bomb hit on one destroyer out of four, we were lucky), although there was one attack from a Nell and I might have thought that was the different vector. Either way, if the carriers in that area had been with the carriers engaged to the south, things down there would have been much more even.

The IJN air strike arrived first and it looked like a well coordinate alpha-strike. Even though our fighters tore through them, more than 40 bombers made attack runs. Flak was good and aim was spoiled. Saratoga took one bomb hit.

Our morning strike was also cohesive, and with a large Hellcat escort. The Hellcat's suffered badly, as escorts usually do, but more than 140 bombers made attack runs. Hiyo, Junyo, and Ryujo were wrecked, and Hiryu holed with a torpedo but no fire noted. Soryu and Taiho were not hit.

The IJN carriers in the south made no afternoon strike, possibly because they were under severe storms when they needed to launch.

Our afternoon alpha-strike was also well coordinated, and again the escort was fairly savaged, but more than 100 bombers got through. Soryu and Junyo put up CAP, so Hiryu must have been damaged too badly for flight operations. Soryu, Junyo, and Hiryu were hit hard; Taiho again escaped damage.

Carrier support unable to supply air cover..

• Saratoga has only minor damage and can still make 30 knots and operate aircraft. In the south, surely Taiho is the only IJN carrier left operating. Are there others heading into battle from the direction of Truk? How many IJN carriers are there north of the Marshalls? The number of aircraft in the carrier strikes on our destroyer TF indicate more than just a lone CVE. In the south our aircraft also dished out punishment to IJN cruisers and especially battleships. Tracker says Hiryu, Soryu, and Junyo went down. The battle report from the first Allied strike makes me think Hiyo and Ryujo also went down.

• Tomorrow the fleet will move to a position one hex west of Wotje, passing through the Alinglaplap hex in the Process.

Aircraft from those carriers likely went to Jaluit after their rides went down. They might play a part in tomorrow's action.

I just double-checked. Mili is size 1, Maloelap 4, Wotje 3, Kwajalein 1, Roi-Namur 4. I don't think there's anything else within range. So 3 bases they can attack from. All 3 are range 7 from his carriers. Roi-Namur is 3 hexes from mine, Maloelap and Wotje are 5 hexes from mine. How does the algorithm work, which bases will they have gone to?

BTW it looks like the heavy losses among Hellcat's was from the CVE's. Those pilots were not bad at all but not on par with the pilots on the fleet carriers.

Any predictions on what the enemy carriers and surface ships will do this turn?

witpqs -> RE: 1943 May 23 (12/1/2019 11:41:39 AM)

I have a group of about a dozen subs heading to a point near Truk where they will split up to await cripples.

BBfanboy -> RE: 1943 May 23 (12/1/2019 10:16:28 PM)

I'm sure he will try to withdraw his surviving carriers, except the ones that are in really bad shape might go into a port to deal with fires and minor float damage. He will try to transfer in more LBA if he has enough capacity to put them on his airfields.

Normally I think he would send SCTFs to try and ambush your carriers but with several BBs and CAs hit fairly hard he might just use his SCTFs to try and cover his cripples.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 May 23 (12/2/2019 5:50:47 AM)

I just did some math. In the AM strike in the south plus their own CAP, I counted 231 IJN aircraft. That seems like not enough for all the carriers spotted there, some of them were operating light. After the previous carrier battle Walter did mention his air losses were pretty huge.
CV Hiyo
CV Junyo
CV Soryu
CV Hiryu
CV Taiho
CVL Ryujo

In the north I counted 47 IJN aircraft in one of the strikes, definitely too much for a single CVE.

IdahoNYer -> RE: 1943 May 23 (12/2/2019 10:10:14 PM)

Very nice action there Witpqs!!

Taiho is a very lucky ship!

Well done!

• The invasion goes in at Wotje tomorrow, with recon DL at 0. No sign of the IJN CVE's to the north, no sign of Taiho to the south. I also don't see any aircraft at all on airfields in the Marshalls, so I assume the redirected carrier aircraft were all flown out for want of knowing our target, lest they be lost on the ground.

Overall

• Both last turn and this turn various IJN carriers have gone on and off the sunk ships list. I figure most of the carriers we just sank will not show up on the list for some time. One interesting addition to the list is Shokaku, because after the prior sequence of battles my estimate was "CV Shokaku - Yard Time, Possibly Minor". She only took one bomb hit.

Yokosuka 5th SNLF Wiped Out at Wotje by attrition!!!

• This invasion went much more according to plan. Of course the circumstances with the invasion of Maloelap were quite different, with strong defenders, and we were unable to spare surface ships for bombardment. The 5th Marine Rgt will pull out while the 6th remains as garrison for now. Inbound are supplies, an air HQ, USA fighters, and of course search and recon aircraft. The airfield is maxed out at 3, so the port will be expanded although slow going it will be. Fortifications are not a concern for the moment.

• Recon of Roi-Namur will begin tomorrow, and the invasion convoys for that target will begin moving up. The bombardment battleships are on their way to Johnston Island to rearm from the mass of support ships there.

• That large batch of subs is splitting up and spreading out south of Truk.

• It seems getting supplies shipped into Akyab from where they can flow into Burma, spreading among the bases on teh plain, is making the biggest difference in our supply situation so far. Owning enough of the road to facilitate the movement must also be making the difference possible. Two thirds of an Indian division at Mandalay has upgraded to '43 squads.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Today, yesterday, and the day before we dispatched a total of 7 subs to Midway where they will refuel and head for patrol stations near the Japanese home islands. In addition to getting back to those important areas to interdict shipping perhaps they will get shots at some damaged warships heading back for repairs.

• Roi-Namur apparently has only 2,200 troops. Due to the sub menace the invasion convoys will wait until the battleships are rearming so the convoys minimize their time in the danger zone. Saratoga is pumping out temporary flooding and almost flight operations capable, but of course she makes a juicy target right now.

• Lots of contacts by our subs near Truk showed major IJN assets making their way back there.

Sara' is still on station with the fleet, safest place at the moment! I forgot to look this turn, but I think she is just barely flight capable.
