I always try to keep the Hammann and the Yorktown in separate task forces.

1943 July 21

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Let's see how many invasions we can get in before IJN carriers begin operating in the Pacific again.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• The Ponape invasion forces are beginning to load at Pearl Harbor and Niihau.

Pacific

• They persist.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

Philippines

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Must be headed north!

• Only one enemy carrier TF is spotted and it is 3 hexes west of Port Blair. Perhaps they withdraw to replenish? The aircraft convoy pulled into Bombay and will unload tonight. With luck tomorrow we will have 52 Valentine III tanks at 63,43 to aid defenses.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Lotsof what I think are ASW groups in evidence during turn resolution.

Overall

• Perhaps the Imperial carriers will remain in the Indian Ocean for some time to come.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Wasp ready in two days.

• Building, bombing, logistics all continue.

• First, our 4EB had lost their target hex and did not strike enemy in 63,43; then, our tanks did not make the full 23 miles remaining to 63,43; finally, the Imperials attacked today!

• The 4x 4EB groups just unloaded at Bombay have upgraded to B-24D1 and are on the rail to Silchar. The 2EB group unloaded there has upgraded to B-25D1 and changed flight crews for pilots trained in NavB. They will move to Comilla so they might strike at enemy naval bombardment forces staging their way in. They also know there are ship hiding in Chittagong's harbor.

The IJN carriers, only one TF seen, are still 3 hexes west of Port Blair but there is a (presumed) bombardment TF 6 hexes SW of Cox's Bazar, which puts it 8 hexes from Chittagong (and 5 hexes from Akyab). I figure the target is Chittagong since they've never staged so close as they are to the other bases. Fortifications are 6 at Chittagong but the terrain is clear so the base more vulnerable.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• The only submarine action today.

Historically speaking, were 4-engined bombers moved by train? I take zero issue with the game allowing it, but I'm curious about the logistics. I imagine their size would pose some practical challenges, unless they really broke them down.

1943 July 23

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Are the Imperial carriers leaving the IO?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Wasp repairs finish tomorrow.

• There was no bombardment, but I wonder if there was an unanticipated abort or something. During the movie it looked as though the TF encountered one of my subs, and might have been at Akyab later (not sure about that, though), but there was no combat with the sub and no bombardment. Now the TF is 3 hexes west of Prome and heading southwest.

• What might be the IJN carriers is 3 hexes west of Great Nicobar and heading SW. An IJN sub has been spotted a little SE of Trivandrum.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Again, the only sub action for the day.

Thanks! I'll keep it coming. [:)]

I remember this issue being discussed in these forums a long time ago, but I don't recall the details. It certainly is one of the game abstractions we live with. BTW, several years ago I got to walk through and around a B-25 and a B-17. Of course the B-17 was larger, but to look at them together it wasn't that much larger. I wonder how well many 2EB would fit on railroad cars?

Overall

• We should soon have enough carriers operating in the central Pacific to overcome even a fully repaired IJN carrier force.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Wasp did not come ready but should tomorrow.

Pacific

• A little more cleanup.

• Ponape recon so far shows almost 8,000 troops; our invasion force will not have great superiority but with naval bombardments should overcome the defenses. Sub patrols based in Kwajalein have begun.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

Philippines

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• A sub patrol from Kwajalein is heading for the Celebes Sea.

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Imperial carriers nowhere to be seen, nor are the surface bombardment groups. No artillery bombardments at 63,43 since that last assault was repulsed.

• Perhaps tomorrow I will move fighter cover back in to Akyab and restart the convoys. A sub patrol from Kwajalein is heading for the South China Sea. 48 fighters at Lashio so we sweep tomorrow. The new 4EB groups will target Lashio when they have enough planes ready.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Still playin' with ASW groups.

That's a good point, and it illustrates how quickly a game like this becomes unmanagable if you get too granular. The abstractions are what keep the game enjoyable (and a game, rather than a simulation whose purpose is accuracy over playability.)

March ARB is close to where I live, and it turns out I have a photo with exactly the two aircraft you mention. Even if one is further away, it's clear the size difference is not extreme.

Edit: shrank picture so as not to ruin the page.

Truk supposedly has 3x ARD plus other ships. I am going to send in the available battleships and carriers to strike the port there. The Ponape invasion forces are still moving from Hawaii so this will not cause any delay.

Single ship TFs like that are usually subs or mini-subs. They may have congregated there waiting for repairs to major float or engineering damage, but you sank their ARD! [:D]

RangerJoe -> RE: 1943 August 03 (3/5/2020 2:03:23 AM)

Four engines per Emily with a high SR as well. Think of how many are broken down and not able to fly.

Four engines at 18 HI and then the air frame should also cost the same so:

8 X 18 = 144 HI

witpqs -> RE: 1943 August 03 (3/5/2020 2:59:19 AM)

Wow, ok! I was hoping nailing a bunch of them would deplete stocks and maybe present at least a short term operational shortage.
