gbaby -> Flag MOD Request (11/17/2017 3:10:05 PM)

I really am not talented enough to handle it, but can sure beg. TOAW IV needs an historical flag/side update for the Germans of WW2. That "safe" flag hiding the Nazi symbol is just, well, the usual marketing decision to make sales available to Germany (I suppose). But as a history buff, its a little, well, eye sore.
Okay, back to the important part, playing!

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 4:28:44 PM)

I did one but don't have much experience in seeing how it works out across the board. Let me know what you think if you don't mind. Note that this file will change all the Roundels to Square Flags.

Unzip the file contents into 'Documents/My Games/The Operational Art of War IV/'Graphics Override'. The files must be separate, it will not work if you keep them in a folder.

gbaby -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 5:22:15 PM)

At least one good thing you made me do, setup JSGME for TOAW IV so I can swap out mods.

I can see the nazi flag update in that file (looks good), but haven't seen where it impacts in the game. The Roundels are the original, the objective flags are the original, info panels show original Roundel... I just don't know yet where that update you did will impact. Hmm...

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 5:38:11 PM)

I just now dropped it into Documents/My Games/TOAW IV/Graphics Override, and it seems to work. Please check to make sure that you put it in the correct folder ?

Hmm, they look a little blurry to me, I'll have to work on it.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 5:58:40 PM)

I touched it up a little bit, and deleted the original and uploaded the newer one to post #2, so re-grab it.

gbaby -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 6:26:30 PM)

I was using JSGME to replace the original in games graphics directory. I just like that method better.

I see it now. Ah, memories, that looks like the TOAW III one. A little behind the times for my higher resolution monitor. Maybe we can get a redo using the higher resolution TOAW IV gives us.

Thanks, its good to see the non-PC version.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 6:40:54 PM)

I am not familiar with JSGME so I don't know if it is aware of the newer file structure - to not use Program Files... and to instead use Documents...

The problem with the higher resolution monitors is that the flag graphic itself is only 25 x 15 pixels, if you know what I mean.

budd -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 7:35:31 PM)

JSME is great for mods. It basically just inserts mod files where you tell it to in the game directory by setting up the proper folder structure. It backs up the original files and reverts back when you deactivate a mod through the JSME interface. It also tells you when there is a conflict with mods. If you like to use a bunch of mods or change mods out its really is easy. I'll set mine up once i see a mod i just have to have[:)]

I'm hoping some talented soul does some counter mods, the unit counters just don't do the map justice.

gbaby -> RE: MOD Request (11/17/2017 8:46:56 PM)

My initial problem was having JSGME (it is free and I use it for all games) point to the graphics directory in the TOAW game folder, as is normally done every other game. That does not work.

I forgot all about how TOAW allows overriding graphics via a user's directory in the doc path. Been awhile. So I just had to repoint JSGME to that directory.

Number of Mods could really grow for TOAW IV, so I need something like JSGME to keep it all straight and easy for me.

Champagne -> RE: MOD Request (11/18/2017 11:51:31 PM)

I noticed that the stock installation file does include a file called "Old Flags" that appears to be all of the old flags. Would there be some way to install the old flags using the Old Flags graphics file included with the game?

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 5:18:54 AM)

No sir, 'Old Flags' are not supported by TOAW IV. For now, if you would like Old Flags, download the file from the link in Post #2 above and stick that file in the Graphics Override folder.
And to clarify, this is a mod.

Templer_12 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 10:38:15 AM)

What we see in Post #4 is the party flag.
Grudging to use it.

If historical, then I would like to see the German war flag (Reichskriegsflagge).

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 1:28:59 PM)

I went to that link to see, which flag are you talking about wanting to use - the 1938–45 War ensign ?

Oberst_Klink -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 1:43:09 PM)

But it is available in the game, @Templer.

Oberst_Klink -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 1:50:32 PM)

However, the Nazi-RKF is 'denazified', e.g. instead the swastika there's the iron cross inside the circle. Legal reasons for teh German market.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 3:40:00 PM)

Here's my take on it...

1. It's 'historical' - party flag or other. It is popular amongst many gamers.
2. It's not illegal in my country
3. Using this symbol in a historical wargame in no way suggests support for what it stood for.
4. My family fought Nazism

'Historical' Nazi flag mod

The challenge with counter mods in this game is that the counters are so small. There's a limited number of things one can do with them.

Having said that, I feel the need to say how just how beautiful the design of the new UI is.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 5:10:07 PM)

Klink, was that flag in Post #14 used during WWII ?

To all: I'm not happy using the swastika either as it certainly brings up the most negative feelings one can possibly have, but I am dealing with an historical simulation and that is all. The German flag of WWII, as seen in Post #4 is historical, period. The other flags bring no thoughts to my mind, but the swastika is a constant reminder of how things should not be. To me, to hide it is an attempt to hide the past.

The great thing is, the game shipped with a made up flag and anyone can change it for themselves if they want to.

Oberst_Klink -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 5:19:59 PM)

The one in post #14 is the Imperial Ensign; the Nazi Reichskriegflagge was this one:

Captured by 'your' boys in this picture though :P

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 5:32:53 PM)

Thanks for the photo! I would think then, that the one that redmarkus posted in post #14 would be the best representation, given the pixel limitation that we have to deal with. However, my American eyes really see no difference between that and the one in post #4 [both are swastikas].

Oberst_Klink -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 5:37:01 PM)

Stevo,

Post #14 was my post; anyway. There were always differences between a German war flag and a German national flag. :)Even now... Alas, now we call it Truppenflagge, not Kriegsflagge :D

Exellent for me, but I'm not certain how to activate, needing educating. I put the h_FlagRoundels.png into the Graphics Override folder but it had no effect. Basically the game is using lower resolution FlagRoundels.png instead. So I'm missing how I can get the h_FlagRoundels.png used by TOAW IV instead of the FlagRoundels.png? What am I missing? Running at 2560x1440.

Oops, typo ... meant Post #17, not #14.

I was just stating facts :) 'sides, I have the 'historical' flag (including in Wolfenstein LOL) installed. Alas, if one would post the 'Hindu symbol' in German forums... that would entitle one to time on porridge. Seriously. As for the modding and the roundel flag, It's possible to just centre on the Kriegsflagge with the 'Hindu symbol'.

I do it the old fashioned way. I go to the main game graphics folder and backup the original image file - call it roundels_original or whatever. To do this, just click on the name of the file until the text gets highlighted, then change the name. Then, I simply paste the new file in here. It should load after you do a full restart of the game.

NOTE: the game loads the graphics when you first start it, so you need to close the game down completely, add the files you want to use, then start the game up again if you're unsing my old fashioned technique.

Redmarkus5 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 6:36:28 PM)

Lucky for me that the only porridge I need to worry about is the Scots variety!

sPzAbt653 -> RE: MOD Request (11/19/2017 6:54:18 PM)

Just a friendly warning, you will have problems doing it 'the old fashioned way'. Move up to the new and goofy looking 'Documents/My Games/The Operational Art of War IV/'Graphics Override'. I rebelled at first too, but learned it has to be done.

Okay, I usually try to avoid the "direct" method, but its working that way. Much better, thanks. Now for those map objective flags!!!
