01 January 1942

Fairly quiet, for the time being.

Some Nells decided to stray near Moulmein to hit some little crappy ships. One squadron of the AVG is parked there. Mediocre results.

Luzon is folding like a cheap suit. I'm down to Clark and Bataan already. I must be the only one in the dark about this, but it seems that nobody respects the coastal artillery at Corregidor.

One of his destroyers blundered into the minefield there.

Steve's starting to sweep over Singapore, this being the second day. I can usually claim one kill and that's about it. I think I can get the Australian division out next turn. I may have to withdraw some pending air units early to gain another 30 PPs to do it. I want them gone before the bombers start to visit. They'll probably go straight to Port Moresby.

Ships are arriving at Townsville. The nice Soerabaja 20,000 ton ARD is there and nearly fixed.

Meant to add...

With my LI in San Francisco, I started at 353 out of 2340. They're just now starting to heal up at the rate of one a day. I'm guessing this may start to accelerate at some point. 3 have recovered so far.

Queen Elizabeth departed Australia for the US last turn, a day after the carriers left. Even left at cruise speed, she's smoking.

There is little or no difference between the 'Queens" cruise and full speed. That is why they rack up system damage big time and it takes a couple of days in port to fix each point of damage! I am not a big fan of these two xAPs!

I love em!! Who cares if they accumulate system damage and slow a few knots, they're still invaluable. They're only around for a short time, so run em into the ground, then just withdraw. Don't worry about repairing unless there is TT damage or something.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/14/2018 2:56:01 PM)

From the damage she had at start, it took nearly a month to fix. She'll probably have about 4 sys by the time she reaches San Francisco.

She's very useful for the large amount of troops she can carry. I wish her cargo capacity was a bit bigger.

No sub will usually touch her.

06 January 1942

Kavieng falls. Looks like he's casting the net wider now.

Yorktown arrives at Pearl. Two days to fix-up.

Lexington and Enterprise hit a transport about 9 hexes SW of Kwajalein. I guess he knows their location now. He should be too far west to deal with me.

09 January 1942

Landings at Kuching the last couple days.

I didn't look but my carriers probably cleared the Marshalls and should be back at Pearl before long.

I'm pretty much down to Bataan on Luzon. Glad I stockpiled. They're getting bombed daily.

Now that all my transports are clear, I've stood down all the Buffalos at Singapore. I'll probably be pulling the air out of there altogether before too long. Any LCUs that are going to leave have left.

A bunch of Australians are showing up at Aden. I'll get them to Burma eventually. My usual routine is to land them at Karachi and rail them down to Diamond Harbor, where I have a fleet of transports. That's my main exit point for all things Burma. It's worked well in my other game and I'll continue it here.

Mississippi is due to arrive from Panama pretty soon. I'll get escorts to her when she's on-map.

I'm curious to see where Steve will eventually take the war. Looking at his previous AAR, India could be a target. We'll see...

Spreading.

Rabaul gets bombarded. No troops yet, but there probably a day or so away. Everyone's out, so he's taking an empty base. Too bad Rabaul is 11 hexes from Port Moresby instead of 10 as my SB2Us I dropped off there would have paid a visit. If he strays south too much, he may get hit.

I'm hoping he doesn't make a grab towards Luganville and Noumea yet. I'm about to start sending USMC defense groups out to these areas. I may start sending stray Australians out to these bases too.

All my carriers are recovered at Pearl Harbor. The fighter squadrons just got bumped to like 24 planes now, so I'm getting them built up. I think it's another month until the dash-4 Wildcat shows up. Times are lean right now.

Queen Elizabeth arrives in San Francisco after a week's journey from Australia. Two days to fix her damage point, and I can send important troops to Pearl.

Picking up...

I'm getting a pretty good freight train rolling between Cape Town and Karachi/Colombo. A few convoys have visited Cape Town, so there's lots of supply to send. There's also lots of resources and I'm sending some that over to India also.

I was half expecting this to happen. Maybe not quite this quickly.

All these hits were 1,000 pounders, so they probably hurt a bit, even on the battleships.

KB is 4 hexes south of Rabaul. I've backed down my dive bombers as I'm guessing KB will rush over to join the transports with CAP. I've only one USAAF fighter squadron at Port Moresby, so I hope they don't get splatted. I've also another two or three squadrons of A-24s at Townsville. I've only held them there, as air support at PM is a bit thin right now. If he gets careless with his transports, I may surge them over.

At Singapore, I'm starting to get the planes out. I'll look at flipping them off restricted status and shipping them to Australia as soon as possible. I'll need to get more transports back to Soerabaja.

Enemy troops have started to arrive at Bataan, so the countdown's starting there.

Planes and coast defense units are shipping from the states to Pearl. I'm transferring some more destroyers over from Pearl as I'm running out of escorts at San Francisco. Steve's been pretty aggressive with his subs between Hawaii and the US mainland.

zuluhour -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/24/2018 12:28:24 AM)

thats pretty accurate for the Banshees, they don't arrive with any experience. Well done.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/24/2018 12:38:11 AM)

Yeah, that surprised me too.

Targets must be too big and too slow. [;)]

They probably got about 1/3 of the hits.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/25/2018 10:31:06 PM)

I'm reviewing aircraft on my 4 carriers at Pearl. All except Lex have Wildcats. I've only 10 dash-3s in the pool, so I'll have to wait a bit. One of them has the low grade dash-3A, so it isn't all roses yet. They're all at 27 in each squadron, and they won't get bumped to 36 until July. All SBDs on these ships got upgraded to dash-3s. I'm out of luck on the TBDs until late June.

One S boat off Legaspi gets a hit. Unfortunately, that one hit on her was a "hard" hit, leaving her with 20 flt, so back to base she goes.

Mostly quiet in China. He's mainly heavily bombing Wuchow's, Kukong's and Dongxiang's airfields.

In Burma, he's got troops up next to Moulmein. I've got 1400 AV sitting there, so it'll be a fight if he comes in.

USAAF P-40s are arriving at Cape Town. They were part of one of the USAAF far east commands (10th AF?) They're up and shipping to Colombo where they'll make their way to Burma.

Supply still sparse in the states. Hard to get much of anything going until that gets fixed.

HansBolter -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/26/2018 11:55:59 AM)

Been lurking a bit myself.

Moulmien is easily flanked and then isolated. The key hex is the one just north of there with the river crossing.

I typically abandon Moulmein and build a defense line along the river.

Do you have a blocking force in place there?

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/26/2018 6:59:29 PM)

No.

In my other game, I'm very heavily set up in Moulmein also and haven't been flanked yet. I do have Hermes currently sitting offshore to watch for any such actions. I've still got Singapore yet, so I don't think he'll be moving up that ways yet. More troops have been coming in at Aden, which I've been shipping out, so I'll make a point to set up a force to the north. Usually I hold Pegu and Moulmein fairly strongly.

I could pull back, but I hate to have him get something for free. Maybe I'll do that, but I'll think it over. I've got time, for now. I did stuff some mines there recently.

Speaking of... one of his ships hit a mine at Tanabe, in Japan proper, laid by the mighty Argonaut. Last turn, they're getting swept, so that was a one-trick pony.

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/26/2018 9:53:32 PM)

There are usually two flanks - I think Hans is talking about the Eastern one.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/27/2018 1:22:21 AM)

Yeah, probably.

21 January 1942

Lots of ships coming in. I'm getting about 3-4 xAKs a day at Panama, which I send to San Francisco. Likewise, I average about one xAP per day in East US, which heads for the West Coast. I'll be set to deal stuff out when the time comes.

Rabaul swept Port Moresby. All my planes are dedicated to escort right now, so no fight. KB was sighted last turn up near Manus Island, heading NE. Nobody's made a run for Lae since I hit them.

Singapore and Bataan are getting bombed constantly now. He's mostly likely going for the supply hits while hitting the airfields.

My subs near Japan actually got hits last turn. They only can seem to do this by surfacing, using their guns and sending about 20 torpedoes their way. Whatever works...

Indomitable left Aden and is enroute to Pearl via Cape Town and Panama. I want at least 6 carriers before I hit the Marshalls. I'll swap their air groups out for USMC squadrons. Probably one VMSB and two VMFs, if I can squeeze them all on. I want to use these two RN carriers before they get withdrawn later this year.

One Indian division plus extras is loading up at Diamond Harbor. I'll use them to beef up Pegu. I want to keep a presence scattered around the southern Indian coast, in case his offensive takes him this way. There's probably a division worth of Australians leaving Aden, who will also eventually ship there.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (1/28/2018 2:45:00 PM)

23 January 1942

I'm getting lots of 5th AF squadrons showing up in the Eastern US. Once they're gathered up, I'll get a big convoy out to Australia with them. That should solve the anemic air situation there.

At least part of KB is starting to cruise down the Java Sea, NE of Palembang. They kill some transports which were there. Defending Buffalos didn't stop this.

I'm guessing KB is split down the middle between here and the Rabaul area. I see another group some 7-8 hexes NE of Lae, probably guarding a convoy. My planes will probably take a shot within the next few turns.

This has been going on in North China. All my units here are static, so I can't do much about it. A few hexes north, I have a larger stack, but likewise all static. He tried an attack once, some time ago, but failed, so he's just bombarding now. All my static units are pretty much on the periphery. Many up in the far north, and others in the Canton area.

A few oopses this turn.

My SB2Us at Port Moresby flew far to hit some ships and got smacked. Their count is down, so I'll heal up what's left and convert them to SBD-2s, as I have a ton of them in the pool. Vindicator pool is empty right now.

Japanese troops magically arrived at Pegu and took a shot and got beat off. I'm guessing the Yokosuka 1st are paras. Everyone at Moulmein is headed north. He has a single unit in the hex E of Pegu, so I won't worry about them. Viper force arrived at Rangoon and is headed east. Yeah... you were right, guys. I'll still be able to pack Burma with troops in the next few weeks. I'll still need enough to guard India's shores. Learning from my game with KenchiSulla, I'll keep a good guard around Calcutta.

I'm busy evacuating civilians and some military units from Sabang. Betties got one transport, but I'm hoping they'll be loaded and gone before tomorrow.

Two battleships arrived on-map from Panama. Idaho and, I think, Mississippi. Destroyers are heading out to escort them back. Probably a few weeks until Colorado is out of the yard. The battlewagons I have at Pearl, I'm trying to get repaired enough to send to the states, freeing up the drydocks. They can only manage from 5 - 13 kts as it is now.

IdahoNYer -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (2/2/2018 9:09:47 PM)

Mundy - Enjoying your AAR and seeing this mod "in action".

Question - what is the advantage to evacuating civilians to the Allied cause? or just historical flavor?

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (2/2/2018 11:11:17 PM)

No real advantage. Just flavor.

Last time up, LST was chewing me out for leaving them to their fate.

Of course, if I pack thousands of them into somewhere like Townsville, it will be that much tougher to take. They were already bunging up my prior opponents invasions as it was.

I'm pulling what troops, planes and civilians I can from Soerabaja. I've a ton of xAKL I need to get out to help the rest of my war effort.

I expected Kalidjati to be a landing site, so I have some troops there, but not enough. Mines were also seeded there, but he's already clearing them.

Subic Bay falls.

01 February 1942

Another month.

Enemy ashore at Manado last turn. Curiously, they just bombarded this turn.

Steve got a bit carless with the timing of his troops crossing into Singapore. A single unit came over and got burned. I probably should have counterattacked...

Several units and some ground forces for the 5th AF are shipping to Australia from Pearl. I'll get more going as soon as more transports arrive there. I need to make up my deficiency of fighters in-country. Recon P-38s are shipping form the states. I definitely need more base forces as what's in Australia won't cut it.

One real battle in China, SE of Canton, I think. Other hexes were bombarded, but that's it.

Overall, I've done pretty well with the civilian evacuation thing. There are areas in the DEI I can't get to, so they're out of luck, but I've cleared the Solomons, and extended areas, like Ocean Island. There's a bunch of troops and civilians at Sabang, but I lost a bunch of ships as he's been hitting them badly. If he ever lands troops at Townsville, a giant enraged mob will be waiting.

Indomitable left Cape Town, bound for Panama, and then Pearl. Once both RN carriers and some of their battleships have reached Pearl, I'll kick off my early Marshalls invasion. I can probably be a bit more daring with such a move, as if KB decides to contest, they could very well be distracted by the transports and battleships in the other groups, while mine won't. In an old game I had with TreeSpider some time back, that exactly happened while I was unloading troops at Luganville. His planes went after the transports while my three carriers proceeded to completely wipe out KB. My fighter strength should also get a bump by the time that day arrives. This is still some months out yet

It is tempting to try it now, while KB is embroiled in the DEI yet, but I do need to get the prep up a bit.

The rest of his force crossed the strait into Singapore without any fighting happening. Clock is ticking there. Once Bataan and Singapore fall, less things I have to look at on the map.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (2/16/2018 12:25:59 AM)

05 February 1942

Supply at Pearl is down to about 68,000, so I'm having to back off sending goodies around for now. It's becoming crunch time, as far as the US is concerned.

Japanese troops on Java arrive at Bandoeng. Didn't notice that happen. He also holds Cheribon and Kalidjati now. Looks like he's cutting the island in two before finishing up the parts. I'm half tempted to run my ships parked at Madjene over to hit his offshore there. Don't know if KB is still about yet or not.

Aircraft are accumulating at Colombo, which I'm eventually funneling towards Burma. Mostly Hurricanes (4 sq) and two of Blenheims. A couple squadrons of USAAF P-40s are currently unloading there.

Static in China. Just bombardments where we co-exist. I think we're both treading lightly there for now. It's not a fun part of the map to look at right now.

An Australian brigade is unloading at Rangoon. More artillery and support forces are loading up and on the way. I'm packing what I can into Burma. Diamond Harbor is able to dispense supply there, thanks to all my incoming supply convoys from Cape Town.
