A little careless with his air searches. I was ready to pull them if spotted. Interestingly, they departed by running the west end of the island, so they're now just south of Lae. They should get out okay.

A couple of light freighters died at Darwin, thanks to sub laid mines. my AMs are busy now. I think they were only disbanded before, as they had accumulated some damage and I promptly forgot about them. Sweeping now.

A small sub victory. I really, really wish they'd hit the freighters instead of the escorts.

Bif1961 -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (2/23/2018 12:22:08 AM)

My opponent did the same thing to me with the Aussie cruisers in early Jan, 42 but I brought in 2 carriers and sank or damaged all of his cruisers south of wood lark Island. I am sure he thought he got away, so don't be so quick until you are back in OZ to celebrate.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (2/23/2018 12:29:28 AM)

I know at least part of KB is back by Java.

We'll see.

Nevada's getting set to transfer to the States. Free up dock space at Pearl. The other badly damaged BBs can only make 4 kts currently, so they're still being fixed there. One of them would take 1100 days to finish, so I need to get ships like that out of here.

My Australian cruisers are passing Townsville. Safe and sound. An IJN carrier group is now spotted 6 hexes N of Kavieng. Too late...

My sub base at Midway is running efficiently. I have the AS, along with an AR and a smaller ARD there, so I'm able to repair most stuff on the subs. Once in a while one will come back that these can't handle, but that's very infrequent. I'm looking forward to transferring this to the Marshalls at some point.

The last of the "bird" forces is unloading at Port Moresby, so I can recombine them soon.

One real fight in China. One hex east of Wuchow.

I'm sending my cruiser force at Madjene up to interfere. It'll take a couple days to get there. I don't think he has carriers up that ways.

I've pulled my planes out of Liuchow, as he's been sweeping and bombing there.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/1/2018 11:34:14 PM)

13 April 1942

Lots of little stuff. The little stuff keeps the war going.

Supply is slowly getting better in the states. Most of my major cities are in the 50,000-70,000 range with supply now. Seattle, for some reason, is spiked at 130,000.

Units have been showing up in Eastern US. Once gathered up, I'll ship them to Pearl. I'm still getting one or more xAKs at Panama every day. Some I'm diverting to Pearl, as I'm amassing an armada in San Francisco. His forward sub patrols have backed off a bit. I don't think anyone is around Pearl, but he does have one sitting about 10 hexes off of San Francisco. It's prudent to keep every convoy escorted.

Indomitable will arrive in Panama in about 7 days. I'm going to gang up the two RN carriers with my US ones once I kick off my Marshalls invasion. An early kick in the teeth to him would be a nice start. Barring KB getting exterminated, I wouldn't push past there until well into 1943. The British ships would be withdrawn long before then anyways. The entire RN battlefleet is also enroute, so my invasion force will be packed with battleships. Should KB contest, there will be plenty of "decoy" targets scattered around to dilute his strikes.

Nevada's making good progress towards Mare Island. She's probably about 1/4 the way there already.

Another shot taken at Singapore. There's about 58,000 in supply there yet. I'm down to 2 at Bataan.

I've pulled the DEIAF out for good, while something is left in the pools. They'll most likely reappear at Aden or India proper, where I can put them to use. Two B-10 squadrons, I've sent to Darwin where they will eventually get to Port Moresby. They've got decent range and maybe I can hit some transport groups skimming the top of New Guinea.

Other than that, constant aerial bombardment of Singapore and Bataan. Not sure why he's holding back so long. Singapore probably could have fallen days ago.

Bif1961 -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/9/2018 11:55:38 PM)

Singapore still has supplies so it may not fall anytime soon as his disabled squads really need rest before another attack.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/11/2018 3:18:26 AM)

Singapore is about dry, looking again. He's not pushing too hard trying to take it. I would have been battering the walls down.

27 February 1942

Batavia finally falls. I'm trying to pretend that whole area of the map doesn't exist.

Supply at San Francisco decided to balloon up to about 140K. Got a big convoy loading for Pearl Harbor. A minority of LI is functional yet, so I'm not sure of why it's suddenly going up. Maybe resources are just reaching places.

An AKV at Aden is going to Cape Town and then to Pearl. When I start taking islands, I want to have a bunch of them ready to start an instant air force once taken.

A bunch of MTBs and MGBs arrived in Aden. I just stuffed them back in the pool, as I'm not going to try and babysit them across the ocean to a forward base. Waste of dock space.

Two understrength VMF squadrons arrive at San Diego. Off to Pearl they go. I think the dash-4 finally arrives next month. Pools are pretty slim right now, apart from SBDs.

Looks like he's gotten to working on Mindanao. Manado is now also on borrowed time.

Bunches of RN battleships are enroute to or have left Panama and most should be at Pearl within three weeks. Lots of bombardment support for my amphibs.

Lex and Sara are getting their March upgrade, dumping those useless 8" guns. I'm not sure if they get the 5"/38 turrets with the July upgrade yet or not.

Some squadrons of B-26s, P-39s and P-40s as well as three base forces have unloaded at Brisbane. I'll get them all to Port Moresby, via Townsville. I've about 850 AV at PM currently, and constantly growing. It'll be Japanese proof before too long. He's made no move towards Lae since I beat up that first convoy with my SB2Us. Wewak's about as far as he's gone, so far.

Another Australian Brigade is loading up at Diamond Harbor, bound for Burma.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/16/2018 2:10:51 AM)

04 March 1942

Fairly quiet.

Hornet arrives in Panama. I've a healthy escort leaving Pearl to meet her.

A Japanese sub is 5 hexes SW of San Francisco, trying to harass my convoys, but got beaten off. I'm dog-legging everyone else around the area. Another sub is 3 hexes NE of Pearl, so I won't take any chances.

Hornet's still carrying SBCs, and I don't quite have enough dash-3 Dauntlesses to replace them. Haven't checked the dash-2 supply, so they may suffice, but they lose some range over the later models.

Other than that, constant bombings in China, Singapore and Bataan. Liuchow is getting hit hard, and I pulled my planes out some time ago. Some units in the far north of China are getting hit too. I don't foresee any major knockout battles there anytime soon.

Base forces and a bunch of USMC air HQs are loading up in the states for Pearl. One VMF with Buffalos is also going.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/20/2018 10:52:27 PM)

09 March 1942

Carrier situation:
Yorktown, Enterprise, Lexington and Saratoga are at Pearl. The latter two are getting their upgrade, ditching the 8" guns. Hornet is 5 days away from arriving on-map. Indomitable is 2-3 days from reaching Pearl Harbor. Formidable is 20 day from Panama.

A training squadron of P-39s has arrived at my Emergency Reserve base, to get crews trained up. A USMC RCT arrived in Eastern USA. The rest of their components are at Pearl or in San Francisco. The latter need to be flipped, I believe, to ship them out.

I have a big tanker convoy loading up in San Fran for Sydney with about 230k in fuel. It takes a while to load that one up.

San Francisco is now sitting at about 150k in supply, so despite the LI industry having only a minority repaired, I'm in better shape supply-wise. Once the tankers are out, I'll be dumping lots of supply to Pearl.

Colorado is due to be finished at Bremerton next turn. Get my battleships stocked up.

Lots of USAAF medium bomber, dive bomber and fighter squadrons have been dumped off at Brisbane. I should be able to protect Port Moresby sufficiently once they're all fixed up and relocated to the north. I've withdrawn the early arriving Banshees I had at Port Moresby, as they were due to go soon -- within a week or so.

My subs are still active.

At Diamond harbor, two Australian infantry brigades, two MG battalions and one engineer battalion arrive and are being loaded up, bound for Rangoon. There's about 2,000 at Pegu, and now I'm trying to get Rangoon itself up and protected.

Indomitable is loaded with two VMF squadrons and the one 6 plane Sea Hurricane squadron it came with. Nominal capacity is 45, but can be overloaded to around 52 or so. I'll keep the RN carriers CAP specific. I'm guessing about two months before I kick off the Marshalls invasion. Hopefully, if KB contests they'll concentrate on the armored British flight decks. Don't think I'll have any fact USN BBs here by then, but all the old crap RN battleships will be useful embedded with the invaders. I'll hopefully hit Kwajalein, Roi-Namur, Eniwetok and Wotje near simultaneously. I'm gearing up for a similar event in my other game, so I'm trying not to mix things up here.

À table, mes amis!

Yes, Surcouf is the one semi-historic addition in my otherwise "strictly historical" mod.

She was bound for the Pacific when being rammed at night by a freighter, my mod assumes she has been luckier.

It's my homage to my adopted home country.

But looking at the screenshot, it seems that I have forgotten the Besson MB-411 float plane the Surcouf has carried - on the to-do-list.

Edit: Weaponry is wrong as well, she had 4 internal and 4 external 550mm t-tubes and 4 external 440mm t-tubes. Can't remember from which mod I have "stolen" the data and the art file, but I'm guilty of not verifying the data...

Resolution arrived in Panama, now bound for Pearl. Formidable is due in 15. Ramillies in 9. Prince of Wales, Houston and Marblehead in 10. Warspite. Revenge and Royal Sovereign are already at Pearl. Also there are the USN BBs Maryland, Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Mexico and Mississippi.. Colorado is leaving the yard in two days, but still carries 20 sys. Plenty of invasion bombardment. As mentioned, 7 carriers total will be coming along.

PoW will probably sail with the carriers when my invasion kicks off. A pseudo-Washington or South Dakota type escort.

Bunch of sub attacks on my end. All fail. Torps are catching up with me.

Also a bunch of ground combat. Bataan finally fell. I don't know if I can live with myself with Bataan going before Singapore. The fights in China are the more outlying areas, not my main forces. Most likely my forces here were static and I couldn't move them anyway.

More and more of the USAAF is going to Port Moresby, now that I have an overabundance of support there. I think Steve's chance to grab Lae has come and gone. Bunches more will arrive in the next 5 days or so. Lots of fighters, too.

I've got 1,000 AV stocked up at Port Moresby. Also there are four coast defense units with a combined total of 38 6" guns, so I think they're safe for now.

Convoys are loading up wholesale for Pearl Harbor, so they'll be swimming in supply within the next few weeks.

Some remarks:

- The "AH Asahi Hospital" LCU should not be at Bataan - unless the Asahi Maru is disbanded in port in the same hex > scenario house rule.
- I would have evacuated the naval HQ COMSUBAF' by submarine or air, it is small at start but can grow to provide a nice amount of naval support for your Australia-based submarines
- I see that you have recombined the various naval base forces into the "Prov. Naval Rifle Battalion" (of "Battle of the Points" and Corregidor fame). You could have formed an equivalent provisional Army Air Corps unit from the various army base forces left unemployed by the destruction/retreat of the Far East Air Force

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/30/2018 4:08:16 PM)

Thanks for that.

I don't always catch everything. I did my best with evacuations, but it does get difficult -- especially in this area. Not every civilian unit got rescued either, but most did. It's hard to balance military and civilian needs. Too bad the Japanese don't have to worry about the civil end of things.

I'm wondering if a bunch of supply consumers in Japan itself would even things out. Plenty of Japanese merchant shipping, in real life, had to keep that part fed, which I don't feel is addressed in this game.

Mundy -> RE: Getting Bottlenecked: SierraJuliet (J) vs Mundy (A) (3/30/2018 4:22:26 PM)

17 March 1942

The dot hex just SW of Toungoo got taken, which cuts that rail line. The problem in a game where infantry move at a glacial pace is that I miss stuff like this until it happens. About 2 divisions worth of infantry are departing Pegu north to there to deal with it. The Australian brigades in Rangoon will take their place. More troops will arrive by ship there next turn.

Hornet is some 8-10 hexes from Pearl. I bumped her to full speed to get her there next turn.

All his bombers which were pounding Bataan are now working over Mindanao. He's taking his time finishing off the Philippines and the DEI. I'm hoping when Singapore and the rest of the PI falls, they all don't get focused on Burma. I'm at the point, where any new incoming troops at Aden will be dealt around India to better protect that country -- especially Calcutta. I know in his previous AAR he took the India route, so I don't know if he's inclined to do that again. An Australian gambit would probably fail in this mod, as lots more troops are available here than in stock. Once I grab the Marshalls, I'm hoping that puts the brakes on things on his end.

I'm loading up a convoy at Townsville with base forces and some combat units for Milne Bay. A big surface force will escort them and possibly serve as bait if his air at Rabaul decides to contest this.

Hornet's at Pearl now. I had enough dash-3 Dauntlesses to replace the SBCs on board, so I'm good there.

More bombardment at Singapore. If it were me, I'd be in full battering ram mode here. Not sure why he's so timid with this.

More troops landing at Cagayan. Only a matter of time.

Other than that, the usual aerial bombardments of Singapore and China. My xAPs arrived at Aden to carry the next wave of troops to India.

22 March 1942

Funny how the war can suddenly spring up in the most unforeseen places...

What started as a casual troop run to Milne Bay has flared up over the last day.

It started last turn with an air raid on my ships unloading there.

quote:

The stakes went up this turn, as a surface force came in to interfere. Fortunately I had one along for escort (and hopefully distract the airplanes) Also, fortunately, I brought more.

As can be expected, Boise was dishing out many of the hits here. Within 6,000 yds, the six-inchers were penetrating his cruisers' armor. The Dutch ships armor was rather pathetic, as destroyers were punching into them.

Subs also showed up with their mayhem.

I had LRCAPped two squadrons over Milne to deal with his bombers, but this grew into something bigger as some carriers decided to show up also. It looks like a smaller force with just Kaga, Zuiho and Ryujo. They concentrated more on my combatants, but overall, I took a beating.

For next turn, all my fighters at PM are setting CAP to zero, allowing full escort. I meant to move more in from Townsville but forgot, but I should still have enough. Funny how the mediums are the ones who got the hits. I've limited everyone to 6 hexes, so I don't know if they'll still be in range or not. I'm trying to get everyone out of there now. Boise can only make 5 kts, so I'm not confident of her survival.

Elsewhere, I take a hit from a sub at Pearl. SOP right now is to always have escorts along.

De Ruyter and Durban are the only CLs to survive this. Most of the transports are away and about a day away from Townsville. I'll need to run more supply there in the near future. There's no airfield at Milne to start with, so that will eat up time also. His carriers and most of the surface forces are gone, I think one hex SE of Rabaul.

One sub hits an IJN DMS near Manila.

Mostly quiet everywhere else. He's back to bombarding at Singapore. Not sure if he thinks he's saving Japanese lives or what.

The Japanese are homing in on my northern "detour" route to Pearl, so I'll be sending stuff the other way around. One escort per convoy doesn't seem to be working out well, so I'm transferring more DDs to San Francisco.

His surface forces take a parting shot at Milne Bay. None of my bombers sortied out to catch them. Carriers are lurking about 8 hexes NE of there.

I've pulled two CAs and two CLs plus some destroyers from Pearl to send to Australia to make up my losses. I also had heavier cruisers at Sydney, now headed north. The issue I have is that fuel is nearly nonexistent in all of Australia. I've a number of fuel convoys enroute now, but it will be some time before they arrive. I may send more from Abadan, since I'm loaded with tankers there.
