SierraJuliet -> 11 December 1942 (2/13/2019 3:45:07 AM)

Here are the current positions of units in Burma. The Allied stack at Moulmein will not exist for too much longer. 33rd Division has just moved into a blocking position in hex 54,50. They are just in time to greet the forward elements of the retreating Allied stack which had been in Rangoon not so long ago.

I have not recorded dud hits but there have been plenty during the course of this game. Now that I am current again, I will try to report on the dud hits. My days of reprieve from the Allied menace will not be much longer so the torpedoes strikes are going to go up dramatically soon. As for Thames Maru she is ablaze and suffering significant damage. She is very most unlikely to make it to Manila. I have had some good success at getting torpedoed merchant ships back to port, but I do not see Thames Maru being one of them.

Damage stands at Port 0, Airfield Service 11 and Airfield Runway 25. It has been some time since the Allies used Milne Bay for a bombardment run. My only counter is to have ships present ready to meet them. A difficult proposition as I don’t know when they will arrive until … oh look Allied ships lobbing shells. The other problem of course is having my ships present which make nice targets for the Allied bombers and of course the ever present sub threat. No bomber follow up to this naval bombardment. I would have thought that this would have been in order to suppress this airfield as quickly as possible. As for the Allied plans in the region… well I do wonder if something is coming soon or this is a theatre where a build up is happening, but the main event will happen in some other place. The recent behaviour of the Allied deathstar where it moved out in force towards the Marshall Islands and then promptly withdrew has me contemplating just where will the Allies push next. Their carriers are all available so is it to be the Pacific or will the Indian Ocean become the launch pad for their counter offensive.

Minisubs and a minefield at Milne Bay might help. Float planes on night search might give the subs warning and increase the DL on the enemy task forces and increase the odds of a successful attack.

Great suggestion. I have the minefield in place. Will get some minisubs organised and float planes for night time search shouldn't be too difficult to rustle up. If Ed leaves the airfield alone from aerial bombing for a bit even better.

RangerJoe -> RE: 19 December 1942 (2/24/2019 12:15:42 AM)

You could use longer ranged Mavis aircraft.

If you go back and can find a pattern of how many days it is between bombardments, then you might be able to run in fast and ambush him - especially on a low visibility night before he gets radar. It does not have to be low moonlight, even just overcast not to mention storms. Then, of course, even Japanese MTBs could be a surprise.

If he is still there during the daylight, low level bombers with bombs should wreck those ships, no need for torpedoes against those thin hulls. If you get float planes there, Jakes at 1000 or even 100 feet should dampen the DDs ardor for these trips. Yes, you would take losses, but you can replace planes easier than ships and while he does get a lot more ships later, he won't have them now.

I'm going to have to go back sometime but there is possibly enough bombardment runs to get a sense of how long it took between them. We have just got to the low point of moonlight visibility so brighter nights each turn for a while. Plenty of storms going on in this game.

MTBs... excellent. Have to see if I can purchase them from supply. Slips my mind that does. If not they are all quite a long ways away.

Ed never hangs around for daylight. I'd appreciate that but they are in and out in no time.

Good food for thought and I will check things out after the next turn.

But if he loses enough ops points at night, it might slow him down and he might be in range during the day. It is worth a try if you think that you can slow him down. Maybe have the subs and MTBs disbanded in port unless he is reconning it. If he is, then maybe a dot base close by. Same thing for the Jakes, flying from a dot base with aviation support flown in unless it is also being reconned. Otherwise an AV disbanded in port. Even a Naval attack at night can use up his ops points, even if there is no damage.

I expect there will be pain coming up at Buna. I have here the 17th Army, Maizuru 1st SNLF, 67th Naval Guard and 17th Naval Construction. All very good excepting that they have exhausted their supply and the Allies have a large stack camped out at Kokoda. Reinforcements in the form of 14th Division and 25th JAAF AF Bn (I badly require aerial support here) are going to be dropped off. I expect plenty of nasties to come out of PM so there is carrier support in the form of Junyo + 2 CVL and 2 CVE just to the north and air support from Milne Bay. The vaious fleets do not appear to have been sighted due to storms so the first the Allies will see of them is when they turn up at the beaches…. Hopefully.

All of the TFs at Buna are spotted during this turn. No air attacks from PM. Surprised at this. Perhaps the hornet nest will react tomorrow. Most of 14 Division is ashore and the AF Unit will start going ashore overnight. The much-needed supplies will also start unloading. 2 Catalina I and 1 PBY-5A Catalina were reported shot down today. I know that 2 of them went down over Buna where long range Zeros from Milne Bay were waiting. What was of interest was that the Zeros who claimed the kills were set for CAP at 2000’so I do wonder what those Cats were doing searching at such a low level that they became targets for the Zeros. The carrier support a couple of hexes away appears to have avoided detection this turn.

Over in Burma I wonder if the Allies are attempting to remove troops or are they setting a minefield trap. Perhaps both. I have insufficient supply available to order an assault against these units… at present. A couple of small SAG TFs are ordered to the area to investigate.

I am very torn on the prospect and chasing down this rag tag convoy. We are very close to Calcutta and I do very much fear the air power that must be here. Not to mention that Hermes may well be holed up here as well. On the other hand, getting amongst this convoy and dealing with even more of the rescued troops would be beneficial. I shall be sleeping on this before the turn goes. I so want to roll the die, but I think that prudence shall win out. Those Japanese surface forces are best kept for another day and not frittered away for the sake of some soldiers.

26 December 1942

BAY OF BENGAL

So, after sleeping on it prudence lost the day. I decided to go for daring. Set those ships to full speed and run a course along the expected route the convoy would take towards Calcutta. Give a destination of Port Blair and set a way point 2 hexes away from Calcutta. My hope is that if I do locate the convoy the full speed run will get us well away from aerial threat once daylight arrives.
