AMERICAN SHIPS SIGHTED

West of Iwo Jima 3 carrier task forces and 1 battle group follow an ASW TF made up of DDs Makinami and Akatsuki. The are heading south with intentions of covering a supply convoy tasked with bringing supply to the garrisions dotted south of Rabaul. This is a sizeable portion of the Imperial Fleet disposed in the follwoing fashion. I have referenced those ships with aerial radar and the newest of aids for the Imperial Fleet.. the type 22 radar.

To the west is an oiler TF with 44300 fuel on board.
To the south is the supply convoy with 17245 supply on board.
To the south west of the supply convoy is a resource convoy heading north to the Home Islands.

A routine mission which is about to be cast aside when reports of American ships located heading on a westerly bearing that appears to be taking them towards Pagan Island. Could it be that the Imperial Fleet just happens to be placed in a superb position to defend an attempt to take Pagan Island.

SierraJuliet -> 19 August 1943 (4/12/2020 11:02:11 PM)

For those who have been following Mundy you will know there is a big event in the offing. At the time of this turn I had no idea what was coming my way. Suffice to say that the sighting of American ships heading west was sufficient for Yamamoto to belay the order to provide cover to the supply convoy and instead make preparations to defend the Marianas Islands.

As for the islands themselves here is where defensive preparations were at. Let me be the first to say that the defences are underwhelming given that they have been subject of recon for goodness knows how long now.

No mines, minimal AV, good supply and insufficient forts. As it looks like the hammer is going to fall on Pagan I am asking the impossible of 3 SBF Yokosuka 6th SNLF and 9th JNAF AF Unit.

Edited to refer to the correct chain of islands.

SierraJuliet -> 19 August 1943 (4/12/2020 11:12:32 PM)

Should the focus move south to Saipan we are slightly better prepared. Good mine field, somewhat better AV, reasonable supply and good forts. It is something of an airfield centre so take away to air support and not too much here either. The following units are currently calling Saipan home. All are prepped 100% to defend the island.

33rd JNAF AF Unit
54th JNAF AF Unit
60th JNAF AF Unit
6th Air Div
5th Base Force
6th Port Unit
85th Naval Guard

SierraJuliet -> 19 August 1943 (4/12/2020 11:22:10 PM)

One island further south at Tinian we have another good mine field, the best AV in the group, ok supply and good forts. This is the units making do with a stay at Tinian. Once again all are prepped 100% for the island.

Rounding out the group is Guam with Rota being a free pick up. No minefield, minimal AV, good supply and ok forts. Defensive units here are:

I am going to make some mistakes in the coming campaign. This is one. I should have ordered my plucky old minelayer to disband or head home to Saipan instead of Tinian. By end of turn she is languishing in port sporting the following damage 55 57(51) 15(07) 53. Fires... the constant nightmare for Japanese crews.

The American juggernaut has changed course and is now east of Tinian. It would seem that Pagan is not the main target!

Do you sense my trepidation for what is about to come.

SierraJuliet -> 22 August 1943 Planning (4/22/2020 12:13:40 AM)

Yamaguchi and Tanaka have opted for an aggressive move towards the American Fleet with the intention of protecting the islands and catching the American infantry still on board ships before they hit the beaches. In order to to this the escort for the carriers has been reduced in order to create battle groups.

The Americans have good detection on our fleets and a lot is expect from our Zero fighters in the coming battle.

The make of of the Imperial Fleet is thus:

SierraJuliet -> 23 August 1943 (4/22/2020 12:30:24 AM)

The intel screen displays a promising result from aerial duels in the sky. Plenty of enemy planes splashed but the sheer numbers meant lots of bombers were able to get through to make their bombing run. The figures also show one of my mistakes. Overthinking or simply getting too clever for myself... Concentrating of having all my fighters up on CAP I opted to put a good percentage of my bombers on ASW duty at 2 hex range. I also opted to put half of them on search. A very bad decision and given that the two opposing sides ended up being a hex apart the Allied CAP had a field day downing my hapless bombers.

The 3 surface battle groups maintain their configuration. The surface battle groups are ordered to patrol Saipan with a reaction range of 1 hex. The 3 carrier groups are ordered to patrol the hex west of Saipan with nil reaction range. I am expecting the Americans to come again for the carriers.

As for the damaged ships:

CVE Hosho ordered in a single ship TF to Saipan and disband.

CVE Taiyo ordered in a single ship TF to Saipan and disband.

The below ships at cruise speed 6/3 are ordered to clear the area to the northwest:

CV Shokaku
CV Taiho
CV Akagi
DD Sagiri

And the plan for the following day... soak up the Allied aerial onslaught and see where the American fleet deploys.

RangerJoe -> RE: 23 August 1943 (4/22/2020 1:49:19 AM)

If the Allies are one hex away and the Japanese fleet moves first, I would make a lot of small SCTFs to annoy the enemy, trying to get uick torpedo hits and then evade. Then the heavier SCTFs attack. Any LBA with highly trained bombers could also try night attacks to try and get some lucky hits in.

Thanks for the input RangerJoe.

I am a good one month behind where we are currently at in the game. As it was with the next turn coming up I was very cognizant of the impressive size of the American Fleet bearing down on my islands clad in very scanty defenses. There was so much American air power left to worry over after the strikes of 23 August. Keeping a credible CAP over this islands was my first priority. By this time, too, I was well aware that Ed comes at you with big TFs. I was more than comfortable with the make up of the Japanese battle groups. The only questions which remained at the end of this day was... did I configure them properly to defend Saipan and Tinian. I had already decided to leave Guam to it's fate. My objective was simply to defend the two central islands of Tinian and Saipan.

As for the bombers... there simply wasn't enough capacity on the islands to maintain fighters and bombers. Fighters were my priority along with keeping American bombardment groups away from my land based runways so those fighters could maintain a CAP to complement my knocked around carriers. Further to the night attack option I don't think I have a sufficient pool of 80+ experienced bomber pilots at present. If I do I haven't spent the time needed to pull them altogether into one unit. I might get there some time later in the war and if I do and the opportunity presents I may just give a night time attack a run.

SierraJuliet -> Early Morning 24 August 1943 (4/22/2020 5:01:21 AM)

00:13 Combined Fleet Headquarters, Yokosuka Navy Base

Sleep this night had not come easily for Admiral Yamamoto, Commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy. So many reports to digest before rest could be contemplated and then when rest was allowed the it was to be denied by the constant to and fro in his head. How was Yamaguchi to deal with the coming onslaught now that Akagi, Taiho, Shokaku and some of the smaller carriers had been removed from the fight. Granted.. no Japanese carriers had been sunk but that was surely a flight of fancy with several carriers reporting raging fires threatening to completely engulf the ship. Had the command to send Yamato, Yamashiro and Fuso to the fight been left too late. And what of Haruna just about out of the yards in Singapore... would she and her escorts be in time to make any meaningful contribution. What of 5th Division, also in Singapore, and earmarked to make a dash to the Marianas. Would there be any Japanese Marianas Island for them to even land upon. The responsibility of command from afar weighed heavily on the Admiral's mind.

Tap, tap, tap.... a gentle knocking on the door. The Admiral emitted a perfunctory grunt to acknowledge the intrusion. He had after all left orders for important messages from the fleet brought to his immediate attention. All vestiges of sleep gone... if he had even been asleep there had been precious little of it.

So what was it to be.... Message from Rear Admiral Tanaka flying his flag on battleship Mutsu... enemy fleet engaged east of Tinian.

Tanaka has conjured an opportunity. It would seem that there would be no more opportunity for sleep on this night!
