Turn 32 - Axis Turn
4th January 1941

That was weird - there was no playback?? Maybe I pressed the wrong button or something [&:]

Turn 32
4th January 1941

Not all CW units are in the rudest of health but there is no time to waste. The line up, as mentioned previously, is roughly (from northeast to southwest):

2nd New Zealand Division (2nd Armoured Division following up in support)
9th Australian Division
7th Armoured Division
22nd Guards Brigade
70th Division (effectively 2 infantry brigades)
Polish Brigade

The Italians look to have built a lot of forts....

Turn 32 - Rounds 1 to 6
4th January 1941

The first rounds are bombardment only affairs to try and soften up the fortified defenders. The biggest effort, as expected, will be along the coast road where the RN can assist.

There are some reasonable loss numbers generated here

Turn 32 - Round 7
4th January 1941

A big effort is put into the coast road where I notice the enemy tanks and artillery are in abundance. A combined attack by the New Zealand infantry and the 2nd Armoured causes panic amongst the defenders and all bar on MG battalion retreat.

Turn 32 - End of turn
4th January 1941

The last round sees 4 attacks, only one of which (by the Kiwis south of the coast road) is unsuccessful in terms of losses, although the Italians either stood their ground or didn't allow the CW to advance.

Turn 33 - Axis Turn
8th January 1941

Only one bombardment this turn - on the British and Kiwis in the north - and a reasonable amount of loss achieved.

Turn 33
8th January 1941

The CW forces push up ahead of further bombardments of enemy positions. I concentrate my forces on the north once more, although also order the Poles to clear the left flank too, and there is a liberal smattering of artillery fire along the line.

Turn 33 - Rounds 1 and 3
8th January 1941

The barrels of the guns of the Commonwealth artillery and British ships will need re-boring after this lot.....

Apart from one nasty bit of counter-battery fire the first two rounds went well.

Turn 33 - Round 5
8th January 1941

I order no let up on the coast road; its not just the road that is important, but the units in front of 2nd Armoured are probably the bulk of the local Italian artillery as well as there being tank units there too. Smashing through these would be helpful to the Allied cause. In reality the Italians retreat but the British are unable to muscle into the vacated space.

Turn 33 - Pre-Round 7
8th January 1941

After the last couple of turns the big fear I have is that there will be another short turn courtesy of a failed proficiency test. I have to try and take advantage of every opportunity. Much to my surprise, pre-round, the CCNN troops on the British left flank are in a poor way. They are chased into oblivion by a British tank battalion - albeit the battalion commander appears to have got a little excited and charged headlong into the enemy lines. But the good news is that the Italian right flank is in danger of becoming unhinged....

Turn 33 - Round 7
8th January 1941

There are three key attacks this round. The first is to try and open up the breach in the Italian lines south of the coast road.

I entrust the first attack - Operation 'Mind the gap' to the Kiwis but the men of the 2nd and 4th CCNN and Catanzaro Divisions repulse the attack with reasonably heavy losses to the attackers.

Turn 33 - Round 7 (cont)
8th January 1941

The next attack is more central and involves the British 70th Infantry and the 7th Armoured. These units succeed in pushing the Italian infantry back at El Adem - exposing their comrades on the left.

Turn 33 - Round 7 (cont)
8th January 1941

Perhaps the most important of the attacks is in the north and the 2nd Armoured's attempts to exploit the retreat of the Italian armour/artillery. The attack goes well and at least 5 Italian units evaporate.

Turn 33 - Pre-Round 9
8th January 1941

I can't believe it - the turn keeps going! Plenty more attacks are ordered for what will definitely be the last round. Sadly I have no units with a movement allowance to take advantage of the retreated Italians on my left flank [&:]

Turn 33 - Round 9
8th January 1941

The key attack of the round perhaps comes near the Italian centre, where the infantry of the 70th and tanks of the 7th Armoured combine once more to retreat the Italians from their poitions.

At last the CW get a long turn and damage has no doubt been done. How much the Italians have in reserve is the unknown....

Turn 34 - Axis Turn
11th January 1941

There is one attack - with air support - that causes big losses for the 3rd Hussars - but they stand their ground and hope that a relief mission can be organised.

Turn 34
11th January 1941

The new turn breaks to find the Australians reorganising....

First things first is to think about a rescue mission for the 3rd Hussars.

The turn opens with an array of artillery and naval ordnance descending upon the enemy.

Turn 34
11th January 1941

It is decided that 4 rounds need to be expended (2 lots of bombardments) in order for any combats to have a chance of success.

Turn 34 - Pre-Round 5
11th January 1941

I try to set up an attack by the Kiwis south of the coast road but the Italians retreat. To the west the 6th RTR is also able to push back the Italian infantry trying to destroy the 3rd Hussars.

I want to be able to attack in a number of places but am worried out the turn ending. I chicken out. There will be just one attack by the 7th Armoured, I pull back the 3rd Hussars, and I organise a range of bombardments...

Turn 34 - Pre and Round 7
11th January 1941

The turn continues and the 1st Tower Hamlets Rifles push back the Italians from the hex previously attacked. I have to assume this is the last round and so will take some chances.

The first attack in the centre of the line by the 7th Armoured is a disappointment, although three Italian battalions retreat as a result.

The second attack is not great either. I remove some of the Italians from the extreme left of the line but they are mostly able to retreat to Knightsbridge....

To the east of this the gap, through which I intend my armour to pass, grows wider as a battalion of CCNN retreats but once again the CW fail to advance.

The 4th attack, southwest of El Adem, was risky and a mixed infantry/tank force forces some Italian infantry to retreat but the Axis hold their ground.

The final attack is again a disappointment given the units involved....

Turn 34 - Round 9
11th January 1941

Would you believe it? the turn did continue after all.

I go for a mix of bombardments and combats and see what happens....

An attack by the 7th Armoured and Kiwi infantry northeast of El Adem is repulsed, although some enemy infantry retreat.

The attack at Knightsbridge is a failure - the 2nd CCNN HQ evaporates but the attack fails to achieve its objective.

Ditto the key attack along the coast road. I manage to retreat some of the enemy but the Italians hold the ground and delay the advance...

...and exactly the same is repeated west of El Adem....

The turn ends.

That wasn't great - I clearly still have much to learn.

Turn 35 - Axis Turn
15th January 1941

There was one attack. Last turn the Long Range Desert Group headed for Tmimi, west of Gazala. The Italians attacked and forced it to retreat with heavy loss. The playback seemed to show a number of Italian units retreating west....

The situation at the start of the turn.... I'm not sure why these didn't retreat - i.e. was this forced on devoncop because of reorganisation or because these are the troops he's earmarked to try and hold Tobruk and delay the CW?

Turn 35
15th January 1941

Pre-Round 1 the 2nd Queens Bn. forced back units from the Sibille and Catanzaro divisions.

I send the Polish 1st Bn toward Acroma to scout the position and possibly cut the coastal road. Instead they come across some fleeing Italian infantry, which they largely pursue and destroy.

Emboldened by this I send the 2nd Bn north into the gap and they do succeed in reaching the coastal road where they sit astride it, followed by the Polish cavalry and a battalion of Coldstream Guards.

The first turn involves numerous bombardments but just on attack along the coast road. This proves to be an ill-advised move.....

Turn 35 - Round 3
15th January 1941

There are 12 bombardments/combats planned.

The first combat completed is successfull. The 6th RTR and the Buffs infantry destroy two units from the 2nd CCNN which helps in my bid to trap as many Italians as possible. Southwest of El Adem units of the 3rd CCNN are forced to retreat. But there is big disappointment at Knightsbridge where the Italians continue to hold on. There is some progress on the coastal path at last courtesy of assistance from the Australians.

Round 5

Round 5 is a bombardment turn as I am concerned at the ability of the Italians to resist my attacks.

My understanding is that Knightsbridge real estate is definitely worth keeping. [:D]

Two attacks as the Italians maul the Polish battalion blocking the coastal road and continue to attack the LRDG.
