Gremlin58 -> Trucks taking victory hexes? (6/2/2001 7:10:00 AM)

Other than a gentleman's agreement... is there a way to stop trucks from taking vistory hexes? When my freind and I play a meeting engagement over the net, the first thing we do is purchase a bunch of cheap little trucks that we use to infiltrate enemy vistory hexes. If you keep them moving fast enough. they are hard to hit....and cheap enough that you can buy a few of them. It just seems unrealistic to have Teamsters roaming through the German rear area capturing bridges with their trucks. I've been playing SP two or three times a week since the first version came out. So i'm not a newbie.... but I have a hard time reading manuals. I'm sure i'm just missing something obvious...Thanks.

The only obvious thing you can do is to kill them and that means protecting your own hexes and going after the others. I'd rather be facing a truck than an infantry squad.

I'll capture those victory hexes any way I can. Give me a dogcatcher in uniform and I'll sneak him onto one. Holding the hex is where it can get tricky! [ June 01, 2001: Message edited by: REMF ]

If somebody pulled that on me once, i would (the next time I played them) start buying trucks with the cheapest infantry I could buy (still more than a match for a truck) and plant them on my rear area victory hexes, or nearby. Trucks maybe cheap but those points still count towards a victory when they are in flames 1 or 2 hexes away from the victory hex. ;)

:D Don't forget it was the Red Ball Express that saved Patton's butt when he was running low on fuel. So, maybe the lowly deuce and a half won the war. No one had the logistical support as did the Americans in the war. Semper Fi Randy

Easy fix, place one silly little infantry unit on the VO's and the truck won't come close. Unguarded VO's can be captured by my grandmother without problems.. ;)

Well I have to say that I agree...why didn't you leave any unit there to defend it ?

Gremlin58 -> (6/7/2001 5:31:00 AM)

You are all correct... I could leave a unit there to defend the hex. But if you have a fast enough truck and it whips through faster than a slow moving unit can turn to fire at it (Tiger Tank)..... it can capture several hexes.... Which leaves the ludicrous image of an unarmed truck beeping it's horn and driving back in forth in front of an 88mm gun. The Tiger can only sit in one hex at a time.... so you wait until the truck moves.... takes the hexes... and then the Tiger retakes the positions..... Not realistic.... it's like a Tiger swatting at flies..... I just wish there was a game option where only ARMED units can take a victory location. Just an opinion.

My paratroops long to find an opponent who leaves the rear area unguarded. :) The most ridiculous item of the day is the incredible German assault trucks... now, that's what I enjoy seeing a lot of. It is getting more and more common.

Randy -> (6/7/2001 8:56:00 AM)

:pRedleg, what is the name of your German assault truck? I checked one of my tank books and I think it is the Opelblitz Sturmwagen or OpbStmwgn for short. You should make an oob for the Opelblitz Sturmwagen!! Semper Fi Randy

Seems to me the easiest way to deal with such events is to put an infantry unit there for every two to three hexes to cover. Let's say your units are entrenched and you don't want to give that up. If I see it correctly, once they've achieved their highest state of defense allowable in the battle, you can then switch their mode to advance, and their state will be 'advance' and 'entrenched'. So let's say you have three objective hexes to cover. Stat6ion one infantry unit in the hex most centered and closest to the general direction of the enemy. If a truck comes pst during opfire it is VERY LIKELY slain since it will be adjacent to the infantry no matter which hex it tires to take. Sure, it may die in the hex and thereby take it, so that's when you move the infantry in player turn, which will be very easy, assuming you have it in CC, with orders, and hopefully it's objective in the direction of the uncovered hexes, which in this case would be in a retreat direction from the general attack, since you are in the hex closest to that attack. From what I've seen of battles in general you could send in 6 trucks, take all but the hex the infantry is in, maybe (assuming the infantry doesn't slay them before they get to their hex or hexes to take), and then the infantry moves, merrily taking those hexes right back, and though movement would lose defensive benefits, we are talking about a truck attack, right? It's not like the infantry has anything to fear.

Belisarius -> (6/8/2001 4:14:00 AM)

Err...is it just me that has a hard time fighting trucks with infantry? I'm constantly facing Übertrucks that can't be killed with less than .50 cal HMG's...

BA Evans -> (6/8/2001 9:36:00 PM)

Which trucks are you having problems with? Most trucks that I have seen are very vulnerable to ALL weapons. For example, the Opel can be penetrated by all rifles and machine guns that I have encountered. BA Evans

Gremlin58 -> (6/9/2001 8:59:00 AM)

Infantry is the best solution...... but it is unrealistic to have unloaded trucks roaming through an enemy's rear area.... I would like to see unloaded trucks that are out of command control do what they would in real life....NOTHING!! I can understand a truck that is carrying around an infantry squad being heroic, and making a run at a victory hex..... but an empty truck? Unless Audie Murphy is behind the wheel..... I don't see it.

steel -> (6/9/2001 12:42:00 PM)

Leave couple machineguns near your flaks.They handle to trucks,if you shoot close range. (german 7,62mm are just fine). Let your mmg stay same hex couple turns ( dont move it ) and you get accurate bonus! Stationary mmg is very hard to find ! Steel

Commander Klank -> (6/9/2001 7:59:00 PM)

.... A couple of 20 or 30mm AA guns covering your back VLs would put an end to alot of that truck sillyness. ;) :D :)
