larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 6:31:24 AM)

The Soviets got two turns in a row just now and I've got a lot of things to report
and I'll get to them all I just need to do one at a time. This one is the over-
extended radius....it''s now 5 so I need to find those units that are in hexes
with 5 or less and move them so the pestilence effects won't apply ( moving them
into hexes with more than 5 supplies ). Also, the supply radius is only 4 hexes
which means there's probably areas along the front line that may not have any
supply right now. I'll have to check out the entire length of the front line to
survey the supply levels. This is the wrong time to be moving people around though.

This is the second day of the SWO and so far things are manageable I think.
Except for in select places that are going to need an infusion of people to fix.
And fresh people not doing anything special are few right mow.

EDIT: SWO = Soviet Winter Offensive

Here's the news strings from the briefing right now. None of it is good.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 6:43:19 AM)

The Soviets instigated over 100 attacks the last two turns in a row and it's looking like they are going to do it
some more.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 7:02:16 AM)

Here's the differences between T47 and T48 before I have moved anybody in either one. This means that the display in
T48 represents the moves of the Axis and Soviet troops in T47, also where they are now.

You can see how the Soviets have gained a couple of hexes just north of Leningrad and
I happen to see a couple of Finn units evaporate so I'm expecting a drive on Helsinki
pretty soon.

A lone Soviet unit has driven himself through my lines and is now in my backfield but
I think I may be able to move some units to contain him.

And down south the front lines are changing as we speak. It's very dynamic and there's
way too many units on the move. There's a pestilence penalty that applies to my dudes
when they move, I think, so it's best for me to find a way for them to stand their
ground where they are or close to it.

And you can see the long line of Rumanians leaving the Sevastopol area heading for
Stalino.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 7:20:12 AM)

Here's the expected reinforcements and of all of them probably only three of them
are possible because the rest of them have been there since the beginning of the
game. I need to look up each of those places to see if it's possible I might be
able to get it easily to allow the unit to spawn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 7:27:51 AM)

The first place on the list is an hex adjacent to Rostov that says it's a frozen
marsh, a super river, and something else that escapes me now and I'm wondering if
it would spawn if I owned it if it's frozen. Does the frozen part of the attributes
disqualify it from spawning at all? Anybody know?

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 7:52:06 AM)

Here's some of the Axis losses so far. I've annotated the image
with some comments that are relevant.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 8:01:54 AM)

Oh yeah, I was checking the expected reinforcements screen list of T49 locations and
the second one in the list ( the first one was that frozen marsh near Rostov that's
supposed to get a riverine unit ) is the Moscow hex itself and it's frozen river too
and I'm not sure it will spawn there if it's frozen. Not to mention that I'm not
going to own that hex for quite a while yet, if ever.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 8:09:05 AM)

The third location in the list is Krasnodor or however you spell it. I'm not likely
to visit that location until the spring sometime. I'm going to loiter for the length
of the pestilence penalty period and that doesn't end until sometime in March of next
year. That's a lot of loiter. Which reminds me to look up which unit are overextended
in supply. I'd best make a not of that.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 8:18:17 AM)

I thought maybe I should look into the overextended units first before I forgot to do
it again. And this is what I find in the southern front lines. I've got to pull all
those units back to better supply or they will eventually suffer from desertion and
so on. A permanent effect on the unit.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 8:26:39 AM)

The fourth location on the expected reinforcements list is Leningrad itself. I'm
not going to get there until sometime in the spring, if then.

Pestilence will apply to all your units. It doesn't matter whether they are supplied or not. You are going to lose 2% every turn. One precent is going to replacement pool, another precent is lost permanently.

So it doesn't matter whether or not I move them? Oh, alright then, I'll just carry on with the game
as if I knew what I was doing.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/21/2018 9:04:19 PM)

Here's the T49 front lines before I have moved anybody.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/22/2018 5:13:15 AM)

Here's the T50 front lines before I have moved anybody and there's been a few Soviet
gains and one breakthrough and down in the south the Axis units are being pushed back
slowly and it's a good thing that the Rumanians are leaving the Crimea headed for
Stalino because they will help stem the flow of the hordes of Soviet units streaming
from the east. My boys are getting tired of being attacked but they are all still
in good shape and my arty is causing more Soviet losses then the Axis is losing in
each attack, for the most part. So as long as my arty is operating I think I might
be able to hold the line for seven more turns.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/22/2018 5:30:25 AM)

I just now discovered something disturbing. There's a section of the front lines that
doesn't have any supply and they are going to use up their supply while defending and
so eventually they are going to be pushed back from lack of supply and pestilence.
This is not good. I'll have to put together an emergency task force of RR engineers
to try to get the rail built for this area more quickly.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/22/2018 1:30:32 PM)

Here's a view of some of the Axis losses so far. The number of HRS's assigned has
declined a bit as we're down to 36K HRS's and that's nearing my self-imposed limit
for the number of HRS's desired. The number of assigned HRS's is a reflection of
the strength of the individual units and I don't want to go too low or the strength
of the units will be suffer.

Here's the T51 front lines before I have moved anybody.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/22/2018 4:26:36 PM)

Here's what's going on around Stalino right now. I've just about gotten a handle on
that one berserk Soviet unit...almost got him surrounded and stopped. The rest of
the front is starting to stabilize and the Rumanians are starting to get close to
arriving at the right place to stop the bleeding. So far so good.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 5:39:59 AM)

Here's the T52 front lines before I have moved anybody. There's one new Soviet
breakthrough spot and I'll have to drop the paratroops there to plug the gaps, they
are the only troops left in the form of a reserve. Besides that breakthrough there's
several weak spots that threaten to give way. I may have to pull back in some spots.
Down south especially. The Rumanians are starting to appear in the AO and I'm
optimistic that they will save the day.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 5:54:50 AM)

I dropped all the paratroops that would fly to the same hex adjacent to the rebel
and I think I've got the hex stopped up...now I need to restore the front lines to
their original configuration somehow. Some attacking may be involved.

EDIT: I'm talking about that one spot where the Soviets got their breakthrough.
I've already moved some units to blocking positions and it doesn't look the same.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 6:01:14 AM)

Those Soviet stacks that are glowing red or yellow....they just cry out to be
bombarded. So I'm using all my tubes that are 100% or more to bombard the Soviets
and the rest of them are resting to get to 100% when they can fire as well. That
way about half of the arty shoots and the other half rests. It's working so far.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 6:06:08 AM)

Here's some bad, bad, really bad news. The RR engieers have gone on strike. They
want higher wages and better working conditions. And bling for their uniforms. Talks
are underway and it's looking promising.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 6:16:31 AM)

I put a cut and paste of the news strings together to count how many days of the SWO
has past and it looks like this turn is the sixth in the series of 10 and we're
doing relatively well.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 9:29:02 AM)

Here's one of my weak spots and as you can see I'm trying to defend with some pieces
of a division instead of a whole division and it's just a mater of time until the
Soviets find out about it and direct some forces that way. I'm expecting to have
to replace them with some heavier forces but so far all the divisions are busy
defending someplace else. I may have to pull back to shorten the lines to give me
enough units to defend a line.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 7:22:39 PM)

Here's the T53 front lines before I have moved anybody. There was one new Soviet breakthrough but I think
I'll be able to plug the hole this time.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 7:38:05 PM)

I've got a spot in my northern front lines that's a gap and I'm worried that the
Soviets are going to infiltrate through that hole into my backfield and I don't have
anything to plug the hole with other than an AA unit. My lack of reserves is showing.
The front lines are getting pretty thin in spots.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/23/2018 7:44:11 PM)

Here's another soft spot in the front lines. I'm trying to defend with two Security
units. They are below the strength I deemed necessary to stand on the front lines
but there they are. The have been holding so far but it's just a matter of time
before Elmer concentrates on their hexes.
