ehh the game you posted a link to ended before the first winter.....big difference between that and a successful Soviet Winter offensive that removed about an Army of German combat power.

Did you look at turn 9 of that link?

Since the early Soviet offensive happened on turn 9+. I say it is the same but each has their own opinion.

STEF78 -> RE: T34 (2/21/2018 7:56:48 PM)

Doubtful if Sapper can recover from such a blizzard campaign...

You're on the right way!

tyronec -> T35 (2/21/2018 9:33:31 PM)

T35.

4 cavalry divisions promoted to guards.
Germans have done a lot of attacks, lost some but 31 wins for them. I threw some tank brigades forward last turn to take ground but have given them a lot of easy wins to get their morale up. Will be more conservative from now on.
Am looking at losing 4 cavalry divisions and 3 corps from being over extended, however while Axis are making efforts to trap units they are weaker elsewhere.
Also cost them 11k for 13k in losses.

Still manage 36 wins during soviet phase - 16k for 27k, but a lot of the Axis were Romanians.
Some way from cutting off Pskov or Stalino due to the Axis counter attacks. There is a 3 hex wide corridor out of Stalino, if they don't leave next turn they must be at risk.

A couple of odd combat result screens, though they both had the correct outcomes with Romanian infantry units shattered.

Interesting links to old games. Here's one I was studying to work out my Soviet strategy before the start:

tyronec -> T36 (2/22/2018 4:17:43 PM)

T36.

Being more cautious has reduced Axis wins to 8 in their phase, though they eliminate my cavalry as expected.
Soviets get 33 wins for the turn. Ground losses: 14k for 24k.

Partisans strike and cut off Moscow, they have been on one rail line for some time.

Leningrad. Abandon the attack on Pskov and begin to pull back.
NWestern. Just miss winning an attack which would have got a cavalry corps onto the rail line West of Smolensk. Axis may still be at risk next turn as they cannot rail troops back from Moscow with the broken rail line.
Moscow area. A few attacks, situation is chaotic and not sure which side will have the edge during the snow turns in March.
South of Smolensk I probe further West with a few cavalry divisions.
Try a lot of fighter sweeps around Moscow which costs me 200 planes for almost nothing, just maybe if the Luftwaffe are still there next turn they could be short of fuel.

SWestern/Southern. The pincers close and Stalino is isolated, some 40 divisions. Axis can easily reopen next turn but they will need more reserves to keep it open during March, so am trying to keep up the pressure further West. Rail line to the Crimea also cut.

HardLuckYetAgain -> RE: T36 (2/22/2018 4:35:12 PM)

Just WoW. While he is on ropes might as well hit some more ;-P

Great playing Tyronec.

timmyab -> RE: T36 (2/22/2018 5:23:14 PM)

OMG nailbiting stuff. Saper went to the Adolf Hitler school of defensive strategy [:D]

AFV -> RE: T36 (2/22/2018 5:52:05 PM)

I have been watching this AAR intently. Frankly, I am really confused. I am told Sapper is a really tough opponent- yet- what I see is- crazyness. Is that just me? You are literally miles away from destroying 50% of his entire army- and it does not have to be that way. Its truly like Hitler has come back to life to command his armies and there will be NO RETREATING, period.

Not to mention the gap he left in his line. If he is a great player, and I am told he is, there was a plan regarding that- perhaps it was to get you to burn up all your trucks- I am not sure but I would really like to know what his intention on that was.

tyronec -> T37 (2/22/2018 7:08:21 PM)

T37.

Last turn of blizzard.

Leningrad. Pulling back.
NWestern. Have another attack which just fails and again I miss cutting the Moscow rail line.
Moscow area. Am continuing to attack where I can, will rail 2 armies from Pskov to north of Rzhev next turn. Rail line is still cut from partisans. Luftwaffe had pulled back so no air base bombing as hoped.

Stalino pocket. Was opened as expected, middle screen shot shows part way through my move. Saper had split many of his divisions down so I couldn't do any herding. Was able to close the Western end of the throat and then rout another few stacks. The results were impressive - the units would retreat all the way to Stalino, suffering attrition, and then rout.
Am hoping he won't be able to reopen the pocket next turn but wouldn't be surprised if he does. Have the better part of 4 armies of mostly guards infantry moving up to the north and south of the pocket.

Will aim to continue to attack through the snow around Moscow and Stalino.

tyronec -> T38 (2/22/2018 7:09:13 PM)

T38 after recon.

Moscow area. Need a two hex advance to inhibit the Moscow railway.
Stalino area. Pocket has been broken and a lot of my units routed. Will aim to shift the 17 and 23 stacks and fill up the gap with guards infantry.

chaos45 -> RE: T38 (2/22/2018 8:40:35 PM)

if you rout that 11=17 stack think that will doom the encircled units.

Dont see how he can recover...also not sure letting the other encirclement attrit away was the best idea....as attrition losses= recoverable losses...while captured/surrendered dont go into the recoverable pool for the trickle of extra replacements per turn.

Sammy5IsAlive -> RE: T38 (2/22/2018 9:07:17 PM)

It may be too late but with it being snow now and there being lots of Panzers hanging around in the area I'd be getting out of dodge in the south. Obviously it is frustrating abandoning the potential pocket but from my perspective you are now in the driving seat strategically and it is your opponent who has the most to gain from a crazy pocket/counter-pocket battle royale. IMHO you are forward enough in the South that you can trade space for time all the way through 42 and then really put the hurt on him coming out from your good position in the North from 43 onwards.

Are all of his panzer/mot units accounted for at the moment? you were keeping track of them earlier in the AAR.

Although maybe I'm a yellow-bellied coward! Stalin would have no stock in these notions of retreat!

smokindave34 -> RE: T38 (2/22/2018 10:43:41 PM)

I'm normally a cautious player but at this point I'd go for the knockout punch in the south. I don't see much in the way of strong axis forces east of D and Z town. You have the potential to trap the few mobile units he has there also if he gets too aggressive in his relief effort.

Thanks for sharing this....one of the wildest games I can remember.

tyronec -> RE: T38 (2/26/2018 11:53:48 AM)

T38.

The +1 is over though still some Mild Blizzard effects.
Have done a recount on Axis armour, just a couple missing and no visible movement north/south.
Have begun to reduce the isolated pocket, my logic in leaving them was to delay their return but with heavy losses during the blizzard am thinking Axis won't have so much spare manpower. Will give my tank brigades a few wins

Moscow area. Cut the Moscow rail line, can only manage a few attacks elsewhere.
Stalino area. Make the three attacks (the 17 & 23 stacks and another to the north) and restore a 3 hex gap to the pocket, with some good troops in the way this time. Have tried to set up so that the best troops have retreat hexes, and a few units on reserve.

The retreat begins though will continue to stay in place around the Moscow salient until the mud, don't think the occupants can have enough supply to launch an offensive for now.
