warspite1 -> STBP 1943-45 devoncop (Axis) vs warspite1 (CW) - no devoncop please (1/30/2018 7:41:07 PM)

devoncop and I are going to give this scenario a try. I expect there will be a slow start to this game as on our first turns we will both need to understand what we have and what the rules are.

There are no naval units sadly....

warspite1 -> RE: STBP 1943-45 devoncop (Axis) vs warspite1 (CW) (1/30/2018 8:11:18 PM)

Things to note:

The Allied player has no immediate air transport capability.

The Allies can't invade any beaches north of the Salerno region.

The Allies win by occupying most of Italy, Brenner Pass, and the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica at the end of the game. The Axis win if they stop the Allies from achieving this.

warspite1 -> RE: STBP 1943-45 devoncop (Axis) vs warspite1 (CW) (1/30/2018 8:23:16 PM)

I note there is no documentation for this scenario - just a brief scenario briefing.

As a result I have no idea where reinforcements turn up. The only Allied real estate is the northeastern tip of Tunisia so presumably its there and then I order them to 'board ship' as per CFNA.

I won't worry about that for the moment though and will concentrate on what I have ashore in Sicily.

Turn 1
10th July 1943

The British (In this AAR I'll use British generally, unless I am referring to specific units, as Commonwealth is too much of a mouthful and Allied isn't appropriate because the US are separate) units ashore consisted of:

Where are the aircraft? Well there here, and I'll drill down into the detail later.

I've no idea what I am doing, how strong the enemy is, what I need to be taking, so lets just get stuck in and see what happens.....

Turn 1
10th July 1943

The game takes some getting used to after the desert movement I've been used to; movement allowance is reduced here. This means less opportunity for sweeping envelopment tactics.

I've no idea what I may run into and so I proceed cautiously with XIII Corps beyond Siracusa. In the southern section of the front, its all about pushing inland with XXX Corps as quickly as possible, and as soon as I start to move, so the presence of more enemy are revealed.

The British 50th Division, as part of XIII Corps, is supposed to join up with 5th Division but their way is barred initially and, this link-up cannot be effected until the path north is cleared of enemy units.

Turn 1
10th July 1943

I need to be a little careful with the US forces as they have a wide area to cover and I don't want gaps being created in the line.

* Wiki makes reference to this unit being called the Provisional Corps. I will call it the I Corps for ease of writing/reading

Turn 1
10th July 1943

Bombardments are carried out for the first 4 rounds.

Round 5

The British and Canadian forces begin the attack in earnest. The Canadians on the left flank force a couple of Italian coastal regiments into retreat

Seeking to clear a path north, the 50th Division attack on the right flank

Turn 1
10th July 1943

Round 5

The 51st Division join in the action. Two battalions of the Black Watch (is there a finer name for an infantry unit?) launch a successful attack that pushes the Italian line back further

Turn 1
10th July 1943

Round 5

In the west, the US 3rd Division initially find easy going along the coastal path, but the brakes are put on slightly with news that the Germans have been found by 1st Division.....

10th July 1943

Round 7

...but no one tells the 30th Infantry Regiment - which piles forward on its own. Artillery support is called upon to try and assist dealing with any counter attacks...

10th July 1943

Round 7

A way north is almost cleared (save a couple of coastal units in retreat barring the way), but then the Allies suffer a proficiency test and that brings day 1 to a close.

Turn 1 - Axis Turn
10th July 1943

There were no attacks showing - but there appeared to be bombardments in the playback. I will check with my opponent in case there is something wrong.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.....

In the west the Italians have put the over-eager 30th Infantry Regiment out of supply by pushing down to the coast with the 3 battalions of the 124th Coastal Regiment.

In the centre, ahead of the US 1st Division, the Germans would appear to have retreated.

In the British sector the Italians are making a stand west of Augusta, with German support just behind....

Turn 2
11th July 1943

That was a poor turn. I can't take a picture sadly but the turn was limited to pushing the Italians back where I could - which was not very much..... The Axis air force is very active.

A great scenario that misses out on one crucial aspect of the campaign in Sicily and later Salerno and Anzio.....the naval support element.

Yes, I didn't realise that until I opened the game up. Its a real shame, but hey ho....

Turn 3 - Axis Turn
12th July 1943

There was a lot of choo choo action - seems to me that the enemy is heading northeast asap. I think I put my British air units too close to Axis guns.....whoops...

A lot of movement on mainland Italy as well as in the northeast of the island. Blocking forces are placed in front of all divisions.

I haven't really got any feel for this scenario and what the hell is going on.

First things first I check my air units and see these are in terrible shape... very few squadrons operational. I place most of these to rest and try and sort out the land campaign....

I forgot to take a picture, but will do this next turn and try and give a proper overview of the situation. The British have made some progress on the east coast but I then failed a proficiency check so things have stalled again.

When running an offense, it usually doesn't hurt to eliminate enemy units and conquer terrain [;)]

Sometimes reading the Scenario Briefing will give an idea of what you should be doing. Otherwise, I usually check for a Wiki article on the battle. Generally, scenario design will cater to history [;)]

Yeah, I'll have a read through that again thanks.
