In that regard computer games don't have the real feel of the real thing either. I miss rolling the die and moving the minature pieces.

The first has to be Toei's Gengis Khan and then Lords of the Realm (I). I played both to death.

But "seriously" (the other two were rather primitive, a bit arcadish), I guess Uncommon Valor.

I don't remember what my "first 'proper' wargame" was. Since it was probably by SSG, SSI, or MicroProse and was released in the mid to late 1980s, I would venture a guess that it was the Decisive Battles of the American Civil War series.

MicroProse, what a pioneer they were. The one wargame that probably saw me clocking the most hours in 1980s was their Silent Service, with Gunship probably there in the top, too.

That's easy. Action Stations. Raw Entertainment and Alan Zimm. I still have the big floppys. The really floppy ones.

Really big floppies are the 8" size that were obsoleted by hard drives in the early '80s. Next to them the 5.25" seem small. [:D]

i understand that feeling , but dosbox is pretty awesome, though i do like to get big box 3.5inch originals which i then manually install through dosbox - if there was at all in existence an external 5.25drive with a usb connection that would be great too but i don tthink that exists at all

I posted this elsewhere, but it is true:

Ironically, last week started playing SSG's Battles in Italy "The Ardennes Offensive" (TAO5) scenario. The U.S. 8th Regiment, 4th ID had been behind German lines entrenched for seven turns. Then I mistakenly left two arty units unprotected within reach. So it unentrenches, moves over to them and destroys them.

I don't see AI like that in many games today for sure. Games that cost a lot of money, too.

Way long ago in the 70s with Tactics II (well, actually, even earlier it was me and dad, and toys soldiers vs my other toys on my bedroom floor :) ).

On a machine it was Chris Crawford's Patton Stikes Back.

I love those old style colors and terrain from the early days of wargaming. Simple colors with simple units and a great AI to play against. That was back in the day where AI's were more important than graphics.

I got my first PC in 1998 and a friend of mine gave me three games to introduce me to computer wargames: Age of Rifles, Age of Sail and Battleground Waterloo. I last played Age of Rifles only last year. I'm thinking about playing Age of Sail again for old times sake.

I miss REAL wargames.

'Real" wargame to me = anything you can learn in a day and enjoy playing for a lifetime.

I no longer have some of my old classics. I think it was a mistake to let them go.

I've been puttering around with some beat up Squad Leader era materials. Pondering revising all the 3 modules back to initial Squad Leader complexity.

I still enjoy Panzer Leader and I have downloaded a lot of user made boards and counters (there's a great wealth of it out there).

I'd rather play a board game solo, than pretend a single PC wargame has ever actually equaled the experience of a single board game wargame.

The beauty of board games, is the issue of AI is never even in the discussion.
And no opponent means you either play it by yourself both sides, or you don't play it.
And you just don't play designs that require secrecy to function.
And there are no shortage of designs that don't require secrecy in the operation of the design.

My current deluxe experience is The Longest Day. 5x5.5 feet of pure simulation. No secrecy, simple rules design, you just need a place to put it.
And as I can't seem to find a man to waste space on in my apartment, I have the space :)

I happened upon Avalon Hill's D-Day at Boardgamegeek 2nd hand market a while ago, ordered it, to my surprise it was the very 1st edition of the boardgame as well. First game with hexes, would you believe.

Plays beautifully even today. A fun, quick game, suitable to solo as well imho, I just roll a die for the Allied invasion decision once German's all set up, historically of course [&o]
