My first computer wargame was also Knights of the Desert (for the C64). Followed by Battlefront by Roger Keating and Ian Trout. This was the original Battlefront game.

My first commercial game was F15 Strike Eagle on my IBM 386 probably in 1986.

First board game I think was Gettysburg at around age 9 or 10 (1970). My brother Mark used to beat me pretty severely.

That's easy. Action Stations. Raw Entertainment and Alan Zimm. I still have the big floppys. The really floppy ones.

And all this time I thought I was the only one who had purchased Raw Entertainment's Action Stations. [;)]

No, you and jimi3 aren't the only ones that purchased Action Stations. I spent many an hour playing.

Guadalcanal Campaign (supposedly "the first monster computer wargame").

My first PC war game was Mech Brigade on the Commodore 64. Later I moved to the V for Victory series which at the time were the best PC war games at the time.

What? You didn't get Steel Tigers or Typhoon of Steel on the c64? Those were the brothers and sisters of Steel Panthers W@W and WWII today.

hadberz -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/23/2018 11:03:47 PM)

I had some for the c64, but just can't remember what they were or was first. There was a text-based civil war game, but it was pretty simple. Think it was freeware or whatever they called it back then. I do remember Wargame Construction Set, but it wasn't that great. [:)] For the PC, its Steel Panthers.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/24/2018 1:36:42 AM)

B1 Nuclear Bomber and Midway Campaign, Avalon Hill, about 1980.

Same. This game & AH's Guadalcanal game were my favorites for quite some time. My first computer wargame was SSI's Tigers in the Snow & Shiloh for the Apple II. It's the reason why I bought an Apple II.

I forgot what game was my first IBM PC game. I think it was either an SSI or SSG Apple II game ported to the PC. SSI & SSG were my favorite computer wargame companies then (mid-/late-80's). Time sure flies!!

RFalvo69 -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/24/2018 5:47:14 PM)

My first "true" wargame was Midway by SSI. It was written in Basic, and you could enter the program and change everything...

Or at least I could then. Today I'm too sclerotic to pull the very same feat. Some memories are not beautiful, but depressing [:'(]

Probably Ancient Battles on Amstrad CPC 464. Not sure.

Neilster -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/24/2018 11:39:39 PM)

Theatre Europe on the mighty Amstrad CPC6128. It was a mid-80s game about a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe. Great stuff. Then, after a long hiatus, The Ardennes Offensive by SSG. This quickly led to The Operational Art of War etc etc

Here's Theatre Europe.

Cheers, Neilster

However, there is/was a Midway scenario in Carrier Force by SSI...

While Blue Powder Grey Smoke was by Ralph Bosson (who did Under Fire, pictured above), he released it under his own company "Garde"...

Still those were two challenging games for their time. I like to have never beat the Union at little round top. My men kept getting slaughtered at devils den.

athineos -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/25/2018 7:27:11 PM)

Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far, Panzer General II

wodin -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/25/2018 7:38:08 PM)

Can anyone remember the name of a fantasy wargame on the Amstrad 464? Even gave casualties by at individual level. Was bloody difficult. I just can't seem to find it online and can't remember the name. On map forces where shown as shields.

wodin -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/26/2018 8:39:47 PM)

After searching again I think it was Sorcerer Lord

DROregon -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (2/26/2018 9:12:17 PM)

Harpoon, then Steel Panthers.

C64 games were hard to come by where I was stationed at. The nearest 'retail' was more than 50 miles away and my occupation didn't provide much time off.

HunterICX -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/15/2018 11:12:14 AM)

Panzer General on my very first computer too thos where the days untill I swapped my old Dos comp in for a Pentium II and didn't had a clue about CPU cycles which turned Panzer General unplayable boy did I regret that I didn't kept the old one [:(].

Cryfindor -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/15/2018 1:50:49 PM)

Ah...Western Front is the only I played seriously, probably yeah-

Caedmar -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/15/2018 4:21:21 PM)

Eastern Front from Talonsoft, Steel Panthers, and Age of Rifles. But concerning earlier gaming, is Heroes of Might and Magic som kind of war game? I ask with some feeling of ankwardness, so i ask for understanding :)

Erik Rutins -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/15/2018 4:26:55 PM)

First Computer Wargame? Around the same time, I think it was 1981 or 1982, I received as presents two SSI games - The Warp Factor and Southern Command. The first due to my parents' knowledge of my enjoyment of all things Star Trek and the second because I already had a few tabletop wargames (pretty sure my first one was the original Squad Leader) and showed a lot of interest in them. I tried The Warp Factor first, which I loved (it was kind of like Starfleet Battles for the computer), then I played a lot of Southern Command (which led me to make sure I got all of Roger's and later SSG's games as well). So depending on what you consider a wargame, it was either The Warp Factor or Southern Command.

HudsonGame -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/15/2018 6:27:26 PM)

My first board Wargame was 1914 by Avalon Hill (1968). My first computer wargame was Bomb Alley by SSI (1984).

95bravo -> RE: First PC wargame you played seriously (3/16/2018 3:18:06 PM)

Tactics II was the first. Had a great battle with AH Gettysburg where I beat my older brother on the first turn. I attacked his only unit on the board with 2 of my 3 units. I rolled an "exchange" which left me the winner with one unit still left. 50 years later and I still remind him of it.

Panzer General for first computer game. Fog of war hooked me from then on. You don't get that with board games.
