I thought that you could not directly move a unit from an enemy occupied hex to another enemy occupied hex. My mistake. [:@]

Skipjack arrived on the coast of Korea, with a mission to drop mines at Moppo. AMc Ayukawa Maru was spotted and sunk with a torpedo. The mines were then dropped. There will be another minesweeper along very soon, I think.

South of Hong Kong, Amberjack spotted a big cargo convoy. This is just in the deep water south of China. A torpedo sank xAKL Kokuei Maru.

12 B-24s from Kolaka hit the port on the island base Talaud-eilanden, south of Mindanao. AG Kosho Maru was hit by 3 bombs and sunk. The base had been built up some, so I sent some bombers. I noted that Davao has 29,000 men, so it is defended.

The enemy division at Soerakarta is now truly isolated, with all hex sides under Allied control. I will continue attacking with the 3+ divisions there. Losses were more even today: 663 enemy versus 482 Allied, but it will just get worse for the enemy, particularly after they run out of supply.

Cleanup at Kendari continues. One of the two US divisions is moving back to Kolaka and not participating in the cleanup. Kendari is overstacked and there are a bunch of base support and engineers on the way from Kolaka.

As predicted, an enemy minesweeper started sweeping mines at Moppo, one day after the mines were dropped.

The somewhat isolated enemy infantry regiment attempted to clear their hex. A US artillery unit arrived but was in movement mode. The US troops held.

Enemy transport sub SST Yu-7 hit a mine at Namlea and sank. It was headed to Ambon. Blackfish spotted a big tanker convoy in the shallow water near Swatow, China. OPilot is continuing to use the Chinese coast for the big convoys. It's dangerous to move subs there, but it has to be done, from time to time. OPilot is also using minesweepers along the coast. Anyhow, Blackfish missed an E-boat with two torpedoes.

I pose this question: Can the Japanese pull oil out of Hong Kong, oil that traveled from Singapore? There's no rail line, and the road system in China is poor and long, so I think not. I do wonder about northern Vietnam also. He's built a big port near the Chinese border. It IS on a rail line from Thailand. I wonder about this because I continue to see big tanker convoys east of Hong Kong, but none going to Singapore.

At Kendari, YMS-242 was sweeping mines. It hit one today and sank.

The trapped enemy division at Soerakarta is collapsing. Over 1000 casualties today. Same for the enemy troops at Kendari. 783 casualties.

The US tank destroyers counter-attacked the enemy infantry regiment near Tjilatjap. Bad odds. Good result.

It's been a while, but if you feel like using the search function, I recall seeing a thread where JFBs admitted they've moved oil from Singapore to Fusan (and presumably to points in between) through a "magic pipeline." So, it wouldn't surprise me if that's happening.

Cheers,

HK->Fusan is relatively easy if you keep TKs loading in Fusan at all times. Longer pulling is fine too, like from Camran Bay, especially if you build up ports strategically along the way with Shanghai > HK > Haiphong > CRB to facilitate natural flow. Pulling from Singapore itself is troublesome though. I tested it somewhat in my AI games and resorted to Singers->CRB transport and them magic highway. Fusan was not enough for all the traffic though with its 8 size port, so I used Shanghai a lot for TK transports.

Grayback has been on patrol in the Kuriles, near Paramushiro-jima. Until today, it hadn't spotted a ship. It fired four torpedoes at tanker Hirota Maru. Two hit. The ship is burning and is full of fuel, and is believed to be sunk.

Blackfish spotted a cargo task force near Wenchow, China. An xAKL was sunk.

OPilot moved Zeros into Lae and swept Port Moresby. The Allied CAP was weak, partly due to the Kittyhawks having just upgraded from the III model to the IV. 39 Zeros went up against 4 Kittyhawk IVs and 18 F4F-4 Wildcats. It was easy work for the experienced Zeros. 11 Wildcats and 4 Kittyhawks were downed. No Zeros were lost. Port Moresby is then reinforced with better planes.

Reduction of the enemy at Soerakarta continued. 578 enemy casualties.

I pulled the trigger on both the Balikpapan/Samarinda invasion and the Sumatra invasion. Loading for the first begins at Darwin. Loading for the second begins at Trincomlee and Colombo.

Sub Steelhead fired four torpedoes at RO-101 in the shallow water south of Bandjermasin. One hit but it was a dud. That was the first dud since the torpedo dud penalty went away at the beginning of the month. For this month, that's just one dud in fifteen torpedo hits.

Heavies and mediums bombed enemy troops on Java. Part of an Australian brigade was flown from Mataram to Cheribon, reinforcing the para unit there. There's an enemy division showing movement to there from the north. Other units will Strat move in today and tomorrow. Mostly engineers though.

Soerakarta continued to be cleared. Another 844 enemy casualties, and the enemy is now out of supply. Similar results at Kendari: 1159 casualties and no supply. At Kendari, the US division that is attacking is becoming more and more fatigued. Over 70 now. But the attacks are working and the time for rest will be after the battle.

Just south of Cheribon, on Java, the enemy infantry is forced out, aided by a tremendous amount of bomber support. Clear terrain. I always think back to the pounding from bombers that my Chinese troops have taken in clear terrain. Still doesn't feel completely right but it does feel completely fair.

Loaded shipping for Balikpapan starts to leave Darwin. Loading continues at Colombo and Trincomlee. Had to shuffle some extra xAPs from Colombo to Trincomlee, so loading will take an extra day or two.

Tracker says that Unryo did sink near Balikpapan, but Zuikaku did not.

Enemy minesweepers are poking around Namlea now. Dutch sub KXIII chose not to fire at them. PT boats from Timor are on the way.

More reduction of the enemy at Soerakarta. 386 casualties, with 68 combat squads destroyed. This should end soon, freeing up three US divisions for the push to Batavia.

Another attack at Kendari causes 921 enemy casualties and all but 6 of the enemy units are wiped out by attrition. Allied units will continue to attack. The US division is over 80 fatigue now, but will continue attacking.

This was a big turn of planning for what comes after Balikpapan/Samarinda, Java and the area of Sumatra around Palembang. I've decided not to go for Singapore. Instead, there will be an advance to the north, with landings on eastern Borneo, taking Tarakan, and landings to the east on the islands including Jolo and east including Zamboanga. I will bypass Mindanao, except for Zamboanga. When the divisions on Java are freed up, the next step will be a landing on Luzon. This should happen before the end of 1943.

Shipping is ordered all over the place, in order to pick up units for the new landings. The staging base will be Makassar. I've been fairly conservative with my landings, waiting for very good preparation levels. I am going to start landing with less preparation, wanting to increase the pace of the landings and increase the stress to the enemy.

PT-75 hit a mine at Cheribon, on the north Java coast. The PT boats had found the minefield a couple of days ago, but didn't hit any until today.

Seahorse spotted a convoy with two AOs north of Babeldaob. Two torpedoes missed an E-boat. Halibut spotted a couple of tankers south of Saigon, in the shallows. Two torpedoes hit large tanker Rikko Maru, setting its cargo of oil on fire. No confirmation of sinking, but the ship is a goner. Seeing tankers south of Saigon is a bit reassuring. At least some tankers are still making the route from Singapore. Unless the tankers pulled oil from Saigon, which wouldn't make a lot of sense, with Cam Rahn Bay being a shorter route.

More cleanup at Soerakarta. 583 enemy casualties, but the enemy hasn't folded yet. It should soon. Negative modifiers for the enemy for disruption, preparation, fatigue, experience and supply. Almost all of the casualties were destroyed devices, not disabled.

Similar for Kendari. 1654 enemy lost, with many destroyed devices.

Shipping for the Sumatra invasion is leaving Ceylon. Supporting carriers will leave Port Hedland tomorrow. They'll meet up for the landing.

A monumental battle took place at Namlea. Well, a small battle really. 6 PT boats intercepted 3 Japanese minesweepers passing through Namlea after going to Ambon. One torpedo was launched but it missed. AM Wa 101 was hit by 4 shells. AM Wa 103 was hit by one. Minor damage.

Haddock spotted the other big tanker that was seen near Saigon yesterday. Haddock is near Cam Ranh Bay. Two torpedoes were fired at big tanker Itukusima Maru. One hit. The ship was full of oil and burned. It probably sank.

At Cheribon, the enemy had moved in the 16th Division yesterday. It attacked, knowing it was up against just a small Australian para unit and a fragment of an Australian brigade that was flown in. But the US 1st Cavalry Division arrived.

Ground combat at Cheribon (51,100)

Cheribon and the paras are saved, and the enemy shows a retreat back towards Batavia. The cavalry will attack today.

More reduction at Soerakarta. Seemingly never ending. 616 enemy casualties. It will continue. Same for Kendari. 649 enemy casualties.

Enemy mines are cleared at Cheribon on Java. More of the Australian brigade is now landing there, reinforcing the fragment that had been flown in.

Enemy minesweepers passed through Namlea without seeing mines there. SST Yu-5, on the way to Ambon, found a mine.

5 US Fletcher class destroyers sped into Ternate. They quickly sank a patrol boat. Then destroyer Case hit a mine (SYS 30/FLOT 82-52/ENG 10-7/FIRE 0). It is barely moving, and has another DD as escort. The three remaining DDs then sank tiny minesweeper Rumoe Maru at Ternate.

Enemy planes appeared over Cheribon. Lilys escorted by Oscars. They found that P-47s had been moved into the base (without any ground support), and P-40N5s on LRCAP. The US planes did very well. B-24s then arrived, finding Tojos and Oscars over the base. The P-47s helped out. Total air losses were 16 Lilys, 12 Oscars and 8 Tojos for the cost of 6 P-40N5s and 2 P-47s.

Sub Tullibee hit an empty AO Shinkoku Maru near Daito Shoto. OPilot is using a NE to SW route, just east of Daito Shoto, that lines up with the approach to Hiroshima.

Another 851 enemy casualties at Soerakarta. 70 squads destroyed in a 79 to 1 attack. The end has to be near here.

Kendari is cleared finally. 3037 enemy casualties. Troops here will now rest and prepare for Manado.

Near Tjilatjap, the 33rd Infantry Division has been pursing the enemy 12th Division. The US attack went poorly, at 1 to 11, with 723 casualties, and only 228 enemy lost. That was with the enemy being in movement mode.

At Cheribon, the cavalry attacked.

Ground combat at Cheribon (51,100)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 11066 troops, 165 guns, 129 vehicles, Assault Value = 429

Defending force 7968 troops, 104 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 265

A very good result. Now I just need Soerakarta to be cleared so that the three US divisions there can be freed up for the move towards Batavia.

The invasion of Balikpapan and Samarinda is about to occur. Samarinda is barely defended, with just a port support unit. A US division will be landing there. Balikpapan has more units, and about 12,000 men. Two US divisions will land there, with lots of armor and artillery support. It will be overkill, but Balikpapan and Samarinda are important oil centers. I'd like to take them quickly.

Sturgeon hit AKE Tarushima Maru with two torpedoes near Sibuyan. This is in the Philippine islands, west of Legaspi. Audio says that the ship sank.

Destroyer Case barely moved towards Kendari. It gained one SYS damage. But it hasn't been spotted in the last two days. Fighters from Namlea will fly cover, just in case.

The never-ending cleanup of the enemy 57th Division at Soerakarta continued. 633 casualties. Odds 30 to 1. It continues.

The invasions of Balikpapan and Samarinda will occur. Carrier support is with CVLs and CVEs. No big carriers. They are all headed north in the Indian Ocean to support the Sumatra landing. There will be no bombardment of Balkipapan. I don't want to damage the oil or refineries, and I don't think it will be necessary. Lots of bombers will hit the enemy troops.

Dragonet got a dud torpedo hit on xAK Kansai Maru near Cam Ranh Bay. This task force is several hexes away from the coast, so not every task force is hugging the coast.

Balikpapan and Samarinda were invaded as planned. Things should go smoothly and quickly. A few LSTs grounded. One is severely damaged.

On Timor, an enemy stack that has been isolated in the jungle for months has reappeared and is advancing on Dili. Fortunately, Dili still has an Australian brigade defending, and level four forts, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Sub Runner spotted battleships Mutsu and Nagato about 10 hexes due south of Tokyo. Torpedoes missed a destroyer.

Here's the order of battle at Balikpapan.

Ground combat at Balikpapan (64,97)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Very interesting ChuckBerger. I did a lot of base expansion at Wyndham, and used the base as a place to hide the fleet instead of being spotted at Darwin every day. Whether or not such expansion at Wyndham, or at Darwin, for that matter, was even possible, is debatable. Every location is different. I think that it is reasonable, with enough engineers and supply, and I certainly had that. And you would know better than most, being there.

That is cool. I've had a few connections to some of the more obscure locations on the map. My buddy's British uncle was the harbormaster at Kuching for decades, a friend did his honeymoon at New Caledonia (his advice: don't do it), I dove Truk in 1998 (my advice: do it) and I had to go through immigration at Changsha Airport unexpectedly about four years ago, to name a few. As someone famous said, "War is God's way of teaching geography to Americans."

CPTBF, that explains the awesome pic of the Japanese tank, non-amphibious, from Truk on your profile pic. I loved when Jacques Costeau went there in the early 70s and it was one of his TV specials. Saw another show recently that dove an unknown wreck at Truk, now Known as Chuk. I also have an old magazine about an Aussie couple whe use to dive Simpson Harbor, Rabual and their adventures.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/4/2020 6:36:12 AM)

Don't want to derail this excellent AAR, but yes, that explains it. I was on a five-day live-aboard trip on the Truk Aggressor with all friends or friends-of-friends. I recall diving 11 different wrecks. The Chu'uk Airport is a nice mostly open air facility that at the time was served by Air Mike 727s (Air Micronesia was owned by Continental). The pilots on the Guam, Chu'uk (Truk), Ponape, Kusaie, Kwajalien, Majuro and Honolulu run tended to be pretty senior and they were all avid divers (most of those islands having excellent diving). I had a chance to shoot the bull with the three Air Mike flight crew guys while waiting to fly back to Guam.

I also met an Aussie here in Korea who had lived in Geraldton for a few years. "Sure, I know where that is." "How do you know that, mate?" Gotta love this game.

EDIT: By the way, I found my avatar pic somewhere on the web. It is in Truk Lagoon, but I actually didn't take any underwater shots.

Cheers,
CB

No problem CaptBeefheart. We get caught up in our pixel wars but real life stories are more important. When the stories intersect with our fictional worlds, even better.

Troops continued to land at Samarinda, supply at Balikpapan. An enemy minefield appeared at Balikpapan, but no ships hit mines.

Many enemy planes appeared over Changsha, with bombers hitting the airfield. It happens every once in a long while. Inconsequential enemy attacks at almost random targets.

Soerakarta is finally cleared, with the enemy infantry division being eliminated. This frees up three US divisions to move towards Batavia.

None of the 100 oil production at Samarinda was damaged. At Balikpapan, 12 of the 300 oil production was damaged, and 16 of the 400 refinery production was damaged. Not bad at all. I'll probably fix things up once I get enough supply on Borneo. I have no shortage of supply, with plenty on Australia.

So, another big dent to Japanese oil production. In two days, Allied big carriers will rendezvous with a Sumatran invasion force, with the invasion of Benkolen taking place three days later. That will be the start of taking Palembang. It's going to get very difficult for the Japanese after so much oil production is lost.

DMS Hamilton and DMS Perry went back to Balikpapan to clear the newly laid minefields. They cleared about 100 mines, but Perry hit one of the last ones. Perry is SYS 19/FLOT 42-37/ENG 2-0/FIRE 0. It's now disbanded at Balikpapan and will fix up a bit before heading to Darwin.

Just south of Jolo, Muskallunge fired six torpedoes at AO Iro. Two torpedoes hit, and the ship's cargo of fuel was burning. Audio says that the ship sank. Near Truk, Iro had been hit by a dud torpedo from Tuna back in March '43. Muskallunge had sunk two cargo ships and gotten a hit on a third up until this point, with its first activity noted in June '43.

Dutch sub O23 sank tiny AMc Kosan Maru near Muntok. O23 is on patrol near Palembang.

B-25s attacked enemy troops near Tjilatjap. Corsairs joined in the fight, using ranged CAP. This was the first combat for the Franks. 8 Corsairs were lost, along with a Mitchell. 5 Franks and 4 Tojos were shot down.

Hake spotted a huge tanker convoy south of Hong Kong. The ships were in the shallow waters two hexes to the south, so not exactly hugging the coast here but still in the shallows. Hake missed a tanker with four torpedoes.

Seawolf fired 2 torpedoes and missed xAK Kinugasa Maru near Tourane, Vietnam. Muskallunge fired 4 torpedoes and missed destroyer Fujinami near Jolo. I had SigInt the other day about the 65th Brigade heading to Tarakan. This task force may be that. I loaded up Balikpapan and am prepared to hit shipping at and near Tarakan.

BBfanboy -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/6/2020 7:08:46 PM)

You may want to go one more hex to get 6 hexes range from Palembang. The SBD-3 has a normal range of 6, so striking from 7 hexes would mean a 500 lb bomb instead of a 1000 pounder. The 500s will be effective against unarmoured ships but there may be cruisers there that can make those bounce.

Looking forward to Sumatra's invasion ...

36 Hellcats from a US carrier swept Palembang, finding 30 Nicks, 36 Tonys and 12 Tojos. Hellcats are lost but more enemy go down. The morning finds clear skies over Palembang.

25 P-47s swept Tarakan, finding 36 A6M5 Zeros. The Thunderbolts do very well, getting about a 5 to 1 ratio. US aircraft from Balikpapan attack shipping at Tarakan. About 90 B-24s hit Balikpapan's airfield, doing moderate damage and destroying a handful of planes. They do help wear down the CAP. Just in time for the almost-always-late-sweeping P-38s, which down a few planes after finding just a few more.

In the afternoon, the weather had turned at Palembang. Now it had thunderstorms. Allied carrier aircraft attack, launching from 7 hexes to the west of Palembang.

BBfanboy's suggestion of moving to within 6 hexes of Palembang was a good one. At 7 hexes, the SBD-5s carried 500 pound bombs instead of 1000 pounders. And the TBFs did not carry torpedoes. But I chose to remain with the incoming transports, keeping that as the primary mission, and had my fighters at range 1 CAP to cover the transports. Ironically, the transports moved an extra hex and ended up with the carriers, so moving to within 6 hexes of Palembang would have worked out. But that extra hex was not expected. The transport shipping was 3/3 movement, and went 7 hexes. Sometimes it happens.

I also noted that many dive bombers went for destroyers, and there was only one bomb hit on a destroyer. Over 50 dive bombers missed destroyers. Maybe as many as 75. Bad luck in bad weather. It was still a profitable strike though. While the carriers were spotted by the enemy, due to the air strikes, none of the invasion shipping was spotted, so this could look like a raid.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Tarakan at 67,91

The Corsairs took losses but spared most of the bombers. The tankers hit were small ones. A good attack in heavy rain. The big convoy with AKs and DDs, spotted by subs near Tarakan, was not seen.

apbarog -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/10/2020 2:56:55 AM)

25 Sep 43

Lots of enemy ships fled from Palembang. Many ran over Allied subs. In the shallow waters, some subs were damaged. Some ships were torpedoed. Sub Aspro spotted two cruisers and some destroyers and got hit with a depth charge. Sub Jack spotted the same ships, and also got hit with a depth charge, after missing a destroyer with two torpedoes.

Dutch sub KIX spotted tankers leaving Palembang, and hit TK Tatibana Maru with two torpedoes. The ship was carrying oil and burned. Later in the day, KIX was hit with a depth charge from E-boat Hirado.

Pogy spotted a tanker near Singkawang, and hit it with two torpedoes. This tanker was also loaded with oil and burned.

Trusty missed big minelayer CM Okinoshima southeast of Singapore.

At Zamboanga, Dutch sub O19 got hit by a depth charge from E-boat W-16. I recall seeing this particular ship before, and it's been an E-boat menace. Then O19 spotted unescorted xAK Kenyo Maru at Zamboanga, and the sub engaged on the surface. But after getting one shell hit on the cargo ship, the sub disengaged due to the damage it had received by the depth charge from W-16.

Allied troops landed at undefended Benkoelen.

Considering Allied offensive air action in the war, today was one of the worst air results, in the fight over Batavia. I wanted to give Batavia the treatment that Palembang just got, minus the carrier air activity. But the air defense was much stronger, and it was obvious that the enemy pilots were elite.

28 Hellcats from Java swept, and 16 were lost. No enemy planes were downed. Defending was 42 Oscars, 38 Tojos and 28 Franks. I was wanting to start transitioning into using more Hellcats for sweeping, knowing that they aren't the best at this. But I have over 300 in the pool, so they can fight an attritional war. But not like this.

21 P-38s swept Batavia, and downed a few enemy, but twice as many Lightnings went down. Then the B-24s arrived, and they took a beating. Minor damage was done to the airfield, and a few enemy were downed. Then 24 P-38Hs swept. In the past, after the other sweep and the many heavy bombers, a late sweep has done very well. Not this time. The P-38s took twice the losses as the enemy.

Total air losses:

20 P-38Hs
16 F6F-3s
14 B-24s

13 Oscars
7 Franks
5 Tojos

I considered ordering the landing of the follow-up wave at Benkoelen. The base will be taken today, either by an auto flip or by combat. If the base flips at the beginning of the turn, the follow-up troops, which are completely unprepped for Benkoelen, can land without disruption. But if the base doesn't flip, the troops land and take massive and disastrous disruption, and then the base is captured in combat.

From my experience, I've never seen more than one auto-flip for a side in a day. There's a dot base in the Marshalls that could auto-flip, and another that I'd seen somewhere else. I can't take the chance that game picks somewhere other than Benkoelen to flip. So, the follow-up troops will remain on ships and will land after the base is Allied.

BBfanboy -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/10/2020 8:52:28 AM)

That extra hex of movement happens when accumulated overage from a day or two of movement adds up to 40 NM. E.G. if your TF was moving at 11 kts it would travel 264 NM in a day. That is 6 hexes + 24 NM extra. The AI keeps track of the extra and adds it to the movement next day. With another 24 extra on the second day, the TF has 48 NM credits and cashes 40 in for an extra hex of movement. The remaining 8 NM is carried over into the next day's movement.
