Heh, I loved your interpretation of that sub encounter!

apbarog -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/24/2020 8:38:44 PM)

Maybe a dud torpedo CAN sink a ship! Maybe.

9 Oct 43

Mines were spotted in the shallows in the approach to Balikpapan. Several YMS were on duty looking in this area. They cleared about 18 mines before PC-1077 hit one in the hex. It sank later. The YMS then continued to clear the mines and did clear the hex. Other mines were spotted in the shallow water in the strait between Borneo and Celebes. Those mines were cleared.

Swordfish hit AMc Kujirono Maru with a torpedo near Jolo, sinking the small minesweeper.

Minor bombing of Tarakan and Ternate by B-24s. Loading for Manado has begun at Kolaka and Kendari.

I-37 spotted shipping at Cocos Islands. Two torpedoes were fired at destroyer Porter but missed. AO Bishopdale was spotted. A bunch of AOs are there, unloading excess fuel after the Sumatra operation. Unloading is slow, and with the sub threat, and maybe mines being dropped, it's time to leave. Cocos Islands quickly became a backwater.

FM-1 Wildcats swept Merak, next to Batavia. Their mission was to clear the airspace for the C-47s later in the day. Most of the 1st Australian Para Battalion dropped on the undefended base, taking it. There's nowhere for the enemy to retreat when they get defeated at Batavia. First attack at Batavia will be tomorrow. Batavia is strongly defended, with its defenses and everything that retreated from everywhere else, including two divisions and a garrison unit, with tanks and lots of base support. But the Allied attack will be stronger, with four divisions and lots of tanks and artillery.

The random air attack in China fell on Kweiyang today, but I'd moved some fighters in a few days ago. 42 Oscars swept and found a P-40N squadron and an elite P-40K squadron. Then 27 Sallys arrived unescorted. Then 21 Helens, but the CAP was tired out. Total air losses were 18 Sallys and 13 Oscars for the cost of 4 P-40Ns and 3 P-40Ks. Four pilots became aces and one became a triple ace. The bombers went after industry but didn't hit anything.

US bombers hit Palembang and Batavia.

The campaign in Java isn't quite over yet, but the troops there are now earmarked for the future campaign on Luzon.

Sculpin hit medium tanker Jinei Maru with a torpedo due west of Manila, and it was loaded with fuel and burned. Swordfish hit patrol boat Nichiryo Maru with a torpedo near Bataan, sinking the ship. Bonefish sank subchaser CHa-54 near Kochi, just south of mainland Japan.

I'd noticed a drawdown in both troops and air protection in northern Thailand. Troops are slowly advancing to contact. A squadron of P-47s swept Rahaeng and did very well. 12 Tojos and 9 Oscars were shot down. One P-47 was an ops loss. I noticed that the Tojos were the "IIB" model, which, if I remember correctly, has a cannon that can't hit the broad side of a barn.

First attack at Batavia. A big battle.

Allied troops will attack again. They are destined for Luzon, but will need some rest before that. They'll get it. Luzon will be invaded after the 6 US carriers get back from upgrading at Colombo, and that will take about a month.

Sub Tunny spotted a big task force near Iba. At least 7 xAKs, a tanker, and lots of escorts. Torpedoes missed a patrol boat.

2 US cruisers have bombarded Ambon 3 nights in a row, coming from Kendari. A bit of misdirection for my Manado operation.

Archerfish has been patrolling south of Japan. Not sure how long the sub has been around, but it has no torpedo hits so far. It spotted 2 xAPs with 4 destroyers and an E-boat near Nagoya. One torpedo of four fired hit xAP Taizan Maru, setting it on fire and causing heavy damage. No men were spotted on the ship. Destroyers failed to find the sub. Then Archerfish attacked again, firing at destroyer Wakazuki. 4 torpedoes missed the destroyer. Wakazuki found Archerfish, hitting it quickly with 2 depth charges and getting many near misses. Archerfish surfaced to battle it out. The destroyer got a couple of gun hits on the sub, and many torpedoes missed the destroyer. The sub slipped beneath the waves. I hate losing subs. Every one hurts.

But wait! Archerfish lives! It is SYS 38/FLOT 73-27/ENG 0/FIRE 0. It is a long way from home, but it could make it, with a big difference in major and minor flotation damage, if it can repair some on the way. Fog of war strikes again! Yes, you can be affected by fog of war with your own ships in the combat replay.

Enemy planes from Sorong and Namlea swept Namlea. I had 2 squadrons of Spitfires there, but one of them was LRCAP over Ambon, looking for enemy transport aircraft. 27 Zeros swept, then 35 Bettys bombed. Then 25 Jacks swept, their first appearance of the war. The Spits took a beating.

Then about 20 Lilys flew from Manado, unescorted, striking the armada inbound from the south. They found over 130 fighters on CAP from the carriers, and every Lily was shot down. 3 naval aces were created.

The Singapore crew swept Praboemoelih, next to Palembang, finding Kittyhawks and Thunderbolts. 42 Franks swept, then 24 Tojos, then 31 Sallys bombed with 42 Oscars escorting. The defenders held their own against many more enemy.

Total air losses for the day were 20 Lilys, 13 Franks, 11 Tojos, 6 Oscars and 1 Jack for the cost of 13 Spitfires, 7 P-47s and 4 Kittyhawks.

Allied troops will rest a day at Batavia, allowing the artillery to bombard. Then the attack will continue.

Sidate, next to Manado on Celebes, will be invaded.

RO-101 hit a mine at Namlea. That minefield has been productive. At least 3 enemy subs have hit mines there. It's rare to get more than one ship per minefield, but OPilot has kept trying to get to Ambon, and doing so through Namlea.

Stingray got a rare torpedo hit against a destroyer, Hatsuzuki, south of Japan. Destroyers and xAPs spotted.
DMS Dorsey and DMS Southard sped to Manado to sweep mines. No landing will occur at Manado, but this will look like it might. The ships find just tiny AMc Fumi Maru #5. 6 shells sink the minesweeper. Lots of mines swept at Manado, as expected. One reason I'm landing at Sidate instead.

Enemy at Batavia were bombed heavily. Artillery bombarded. Deliberate attack next.

Hellcats from Kolaka swept Manado, finding Jacks. 5 Jacks were downed, while 6 Hellcats were lost. Over 350 Hellcats in the pools. They aren't great sweepers but they need to see more use. B-24s then bombed. 1 Jack and 2 Bettys, and 5 transport Helens were destroyed on the ground.

East of Mindanao, Tarpon hit xAP Buenos Aires Maru with a torpedo. No men seen aboard.

Sidate was invaded. The bulk of the armada was supposed to move one hex from Sidate, allowing for ranged CAP from the carriers. I neglected to order my CVE task force to the hex, and I had lots of task forces following the CVEs. So the carriers and follow-up task forces stayed to the south, 5 hexes from Sidate. So, no air cover today over Sidate. But it didn't matter. There were no enemy planes.

At Rahaeng, east of Rangoon, Allied forces make a river crossing. Enemy forces had been reduced here recently. But not enough, apparently.

Saury hit xAKL Konsan Maru with 2 torpedoes near Babeldaob, probably sinking the ship. There were 10 Petes reported lost "on the ground", so the ship could have been loaded. Or some other ship previously damaged sank.

2 US DMS continued to sweep mines at Manado, even though there won't be a landing there. It would open up the opportunity for some slow battleship bombardments. There are 4 slow battleships traveling with the armada.

OPilot tried some night attacks against shipping at Sidate. Over 30 Bettys attacked, some with torpedoes, some with bombs. All missed. They went after the multi-national combat task force there, targeting mostly cruisers. Lots of troops landed at Sidate, but most ships arrived late in the day, so most are still partially loaded. 2 US divisions start to march from Sidate to Manado, as parts of the divisions continue to unload.

P-47s from Rangoon again swept Rahaeng, but this time the base was defended by 35 Oscars and 36 Franks. The Thunderbolts did well. Bombers followed, unescorted, but the fighters never caught up to them.

I had P-38s fly LRCAP over the Chinese that had the terrible river crossing yesterday. Oscars swept the hex, and escorted bombers bombed. The P-38s did well until they tired out. The Japanese army then counter attacked, as expected.

Allied troops will rest a day while the artillery bombards. I don't need the enemy troops to be cleared out right away, but I do want the attacking troops to start resting up for the Luzon invasion. I could leave enough to hold Batavia and move the rest out to recuperate. Or just finish off the enemy at whatever cost. Not sure yet.

Another big battle, this one at Palembang. Doesn't go as well for the home team. 2 divisions crossed a river into Palembang. I'm not sure if they participated in the shock attack or not. They crossed a hexside that had not been crossed before, so I expected a shock attack, and ordered the troops already in Palembang to shock attack also.

[EDIT: Taking another look at the units, 3 of the 4 divisions were obviously affected by the shock attack. One was not. But two divisions crossed the river, so I can conclude that all divisions did participate.]

I did make a miscalculation. Palembang has a 40,000 stacking limit, and I'm over 70,000. I will move out 2 divisions, and rotate divisions in and out as I reduce the enemy. The US division that took an unoccupied Oosthaven is ordered north to join the fight at Palembang.

apbarog -> RE: Did You Know I Used to Drive a Rollercoaster?: Apbarog(A) vs OPilot(J) (3/30/2020 4:52:40 PM)

Planning

The Manado operation is occurring now. Next up will be taking Zamboanga on Mindanao, and the islands to the west. Then Luzon, using troops that are finishing up on Java. The question is, what to do with the troops on Sumatra after Palembang is taken? I have 1 US, 2 British and 2 Indian divisions there.

I'm contemplating either a landing at Mersing to take Singapore, or a move from Luzon to Formosa. There is good and bad for both. Singapore would be a great base to have, but it would be difficult. 2 divisions would be needed just to hold Mersing and the hex to the west, to keep the peninsula cut off. That leaves 3 divisions to take Singapore, without a lot of artillery or armor support. But Singapore is becoming less and less important, with almost all of the oil centers taken or about to be. It can be bypassed. Landing there would also open up the possibility of a big enemy reinforcement with troops currently in Thailand. It could be a tough battle. Formosa, I think, would be doable after the Luzon landing. It would truly cut naval movement from Japan. And it would be a good springboard into China itself.

I'll have 5 divisions available. Time to plan what to do with them.

Enemy mines were completely swept at Manado. Now I'll send in four slow US battleships to bombard. They'll rearm at Kendari and be back to support upcoming attacks at Manado.

Halibut hit xAK Tamagawa Maru with two torpedoes near Groot Natoena, north of Borneo. Audio says that the ship sank, and it was carrying troops. Trigger sank subchaser Ch 42 near Naha. US subs are in the shallows in the Philippines, and the enemy is looking for them.

Palembang was heavily bombed by B-24s.

Near Sian in China, the enemy tried again to push the Chinese back across the river. With the enemy armor unit spent and headed to Sian, they couldn't do the job.

Battleships Oklahoma, Nevada, Arizona and West Virginia bombarded mine-free Manado in two bombardments. A total of 734 casualties, almost all non-combat squads. Minor base damage and 2 Bettys destroyed. RO-37 got a shot at West Virgina but missed. The sub then got hit by a depth charge from destroyer O'Brien, and many near misses.

B-24s hit Ambon, Manado and Palembang. British long range bombers tried to drop mines at Miri at night. I got messages that planes had turned back. Apparently they all did, as no mines were dropped. I order them to go back today, in daylight. Night is more realistic, since bombers dropping mines don't ever get intercepted. But the mining must be done. Miri continues to have tankers, with a very heavy CAP.

Growler got two torpedo hits on xAK Keisyo Maru near Daito Shoto, south of Japan. One hit was a dud.

Allied forces work on clearing out the enemy at Batavia. Just a matter of how many days it will take and how many Allied squads will get disabled. That will affect preparations for Luzon. All bases on Java, including Batavia, are Allied. The only enemy left are at Batavia.

A US Marine division will cross the river into Tarakan today. Defenses seem light, with a good chance that enemy troops are being airlifted out, seeing fewer troops there over time. It's no surprise that I'm coming.

Landing at Sidate is complete. Carriers and transports head to Makassar to make ready for the next operation. Troops at Sidate are heading into Manado on a good road.

Sub Aspro sank subchaser CHa-62 near Amami Oshima.

4 US battleships bombarded Manado, causing over 600 casualties and doing minor damage to the already damaged base.

Enemy air pummeled the Chinese near Sian. Four Allied fighter groups will LRCAP them today and hope for the best.

13 Bettys with 14 Zeros flew from Sorong to Ternate to attack 2 YMS sweeping mines there. All torpedoes missed. I was fortunate that they didn't go after the 4 slow battleships just to the west. They had been spotted by the enemy also, and didn't have CAP. Sidate just became a level one airfield, so that'll help the battleships the next time they go to Manado.

Another cleanup attack at Manado. Enemy units being destroyed by combat and attrition.

No enemy air over the Chinese by Sian, so my LRCAP found nothing. They'll stay there for today. I expect action. Another enemy unit arrived, and it looks like the last one coming. The Japanese will attack today and kick the Chinese out. I expect enemy air to support.

More cleanup at Batavia. 5883 enemy casualties today, and just a few units left.

US troops rested at Manado, except for the 131st Combat Engineer Regiment, that didn't get the orders. They attacked alone and were wrecked. The rest of the stack will attack today. I ordered the battleships to go to Makassar to support the next round of invasions.

Good attack at Palembang. They go again today. If the results worsen, the 2 divisions will be rotated out.

You reduced Palembang's forts and he lost a much higher proportion of his AV than you did. Two more rounds should do it.

Palembang's troops rested, but will attack today. A fresh US division is moving into Palembang, willing to overstack if the base isn't taken first. Those troops will definitely tip the scales to victory.

21 Oct 43

In a night attack, Bettys from Davao and Sorong attacked four US destroyers near Manado. The DDs were looking for subs. The Bettys were probably looking for my slow battleships, which could have been coming back to Manado, but weren't. All torpedoes missed. Four Bettys were shot down by flak.

Skipjack sank E-boat Tsubame west of Bataan. Two torpedoes did the job. Blackfish hit medium tanker Ogura Maru #2 near Balabac. The tanker was burning but wasn't loaded. It was heading west towards Miri.

Approximately six enemy destroyers showed up at Ambon during the night, and stayed during the daylight. No enemy fighters at Ambon, but some appeared at Boela, and were probably LRCAP over the ships. I would have had some targets if I'd had some naval bombers in the area. Didn't expect ships to go back to Ambon. Namlea is an Allied base, right next door, and has a size 2 airfield. I moved some SBDs and F6Fs in for today. The enemy may be pulling out troops, sensing what is happening up north at Manado. If he had been resupplying, they would have dropped off troops at night and left.

A reinforced enemy attacked the Chinese again near Sian. It was a tough fight.

And the Allies pulled off a rather daring attack at Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. All of the transports normally flying the Hump went to Rangoon and dropped the Indian 77th LRP Brigade, at least most of it. Big para drop on a fortified base in jungle terrain, and it worked. Sturgeon hit xAK Chihaya Maru with a torpedo near Tablas, in the Philippine islands.

36 Zeros from Davao swept Sidate, next to Manado. 18 Corsairs were on CAP. They hadn't moved to Manado yet because of the high base damage there. Zeros were downed. Then 36 Tonys came from the damaged base at Ternate. About even losses. 29 Bettys with 27 Zeros were next, against just 5 Corsairs. The Bettys, interestingly, went after the size 0 port at Sidate. I have an AVD there, supporting Catalinas. Sallys then bombed Manado, doing minor base damage.

Major enemy effort at Praboemoelik, next to Palembang. 30 Tojos swept, finding 21 P-47s. The Tojos did well. 29 Bettys with 36 Zeros arrived from Singapore. Flak did better than the Thunderbolts. Then 26 Sallys with 42 Oscars, against just 4 Thunderbolts. Flak did the good work again. Minor base damage. Severe storms helped. Then 32 Franks.

In China, B-24s from Kunming hit Canton and Wuchow's airfields, doing minor damage and destroying a few planes.

P-38s tangled with some Oscars over the lone Chinese corp stuck on the wrong side of the river near Sian. Equal losses, before the Chinese corp was forced to surrender. 4698 Chinese casualties.

Then Palembang was taken. One Brit division just arrived and did not participate.

The reinforcing Brit division will stay to clean up. The others will move out to Oosthaven to rest and prepare. Palembang's oil and refinery was damaged in the attack. Palembang has 513 of the 900 oil damaged, and 427 of the 750 refinery damaged. This isn't a big deal for the Allied player, but I'd like to repair both. Fuel closer to the front, in large quantities, is a good thing. I will repair them, just not immediately. Not until I can properly protect the facilities with fighters. If OPilot sees me repairing, he'll know that I value the oil enough to burn supply, and he'll bomb. He hasn't so far. Djambi has no damage to its oil, with no fighter protection, and it hasn't been hit. Supply isn't a problem. I have plenty. Just need to get more to Sumatra, in time, to make it happen.

Total air losses were 25 A6M5 Zeros, 14 Tojos, 6 Tonys, 5 Oscars and 5 Sallys, for the cost of 15 P-47s, 8 P-38s and 5 F4U-1s.

Great progress. Lucena on Luzon is a good place to drop a para and then unload an army if it's not garrisoned.

Cheers,
CB

We're thinking alike CaptBeefheart. If my Java troops have recuperated before they are as prepped as I'd like them to be for Luzon, I've planned a para drop on Lucena, and then land everything there. If Lucena is found to be occupied beforehand, I'd drop somewhere that isn't occupied.

British sub Trusty missed xAK Ryoyo Maru north of Miri. Miri is still being used by the enemy, being one of the few oil production facilities still in enemy hands. It probably has mines. It definitely has about 100 enemy fighters.

Seal hit tanker Eiyo Maru near Kuantan, northeast of Singapore in the shallow water. The tanker is burning but was empty, so at least some tankers are still traveling to Singapore.

A cleanup attack at Palembang caused 169 enemy casualties. Just one division participated, with another resting and another leaving the area. The enemy is isolated here and out of supply. Will be eliminated by being worn down.

The next big invasion step is in progress, with ships headed north along the eastern coast of Borneo. Lots of subs expected, and starting to be spotted. OPilot has been using his subs as defensive barriers for much of the war. I've had little to worry about with my reinforcement convoys coming from the US. I use a single escort as part of a huge convoy, just in case, but they never see a sub. I continue to use the same classified convoy routes.

7 Japanese destroyers encountered 6 PT boats at Namlea. The DDs were just passing through, apparently going to Boela. The fight was during the day, and the enemy attempted to evade combat. So the DDs weren't there for combat. Maybe doing troops or supply movement. Anyhow, the range never closed lower than 16,000 yards, and no shells hit the PT boats.

Enemy fighters swept over advancing Allied units in the jungle northwest of Bangkok. No CAP.

13 Bettys from Davao attack several US subchasers near Tawi Tawi. All torpedoes missed.

Today Zamboanga and Jolo will be invaded. Lots of enemy planes at Cotabato and Davao. Will be interesting to see if they go after the carriers. From where the carriers are today, and the fact that no other task forces were spotted, it won't be expected that they'll move to Zamboanga today.

26 Oct 43

Dutch subs reacted to an enemy sub near Samarinda, at night. The sub took minor damage. This got my attention because I house rule myself against using reaction ranges for ASW task forces. I don't think they need this added ability and do just fine with proper placement and air support. I don't remember if I made this a house rule at the beginning of the game. The task force had been made as a combat task force initially, with a reaction range. At some time I changed it to ASW, but didn't notice the reaction range setting. I apologized for the oversight.

Haddock missed a big transport, xAP Miike Maru, near Swatow, hugging the coast.

Basilan, Jolo and Zamboanga were invaded.

The Japanese launched two big air strikes against the invasion armada near Zamboanga. The first came from Davao, and consisted of 59 Bettys escorted by 26 Jacks. On CAP were 12 Sea Hurricanes, 36 FM-1 Wildcats and 187 Hellcats. Most of the enemy were shot down. 4 Bettys dropped torpedoes, targeting Wasp and Saratoga. All missed. More Bettys were downed by flak.

The second strike came from Cotabato, and consisted of about 30 Lilys escorted by 32 Tojos. About half of the Tojos were downed, and every Lily was shot down. No Lily survived long enough to drop bombs.

Total air losses were lopsided. The enemy lost 65 Bettys, 32 Lilys, 23 Jacks and 18 Tojos. The Allies lost 2 FM-1s, 1 F6F-3 and 1 Sea Hurricane. 11 naval pilots became aces today.

CAP was good enough for these strikes. If the escorts had been doubled, things could have been different. Remember, I'm using just 3 US CVs, and lots of CVEs and a couple of CVLs. Not the whole carrier fleet. 6 US CVs are still refitting at Colombo. They are due out within a week. The point is that this isn't the "Death Star". That will form when the carriers return from Ceylon and we go to Luzon.

Cleanup continued at Manado. 1046 enemy casualties. At Palembang, same story. More cleanup. 544 casualties for the enemy and mounting.

US forces attacked at Tarakan. It will be taken very soon.

27 Oct 43

Lots of action today.

The Chinese stack that came out of the woods near Wuchow and had moved into a clear hex was spotted today. They still need a few days to get into the lightly defended town. Fighters are moved to Kweilin to try and protect them.

Swordfish hit PB Seki Maru #2 near Iba, probably sinking the boat. Skipjack hit ACM Wa 18 near Bataan, also probably sinking it.

Five Australian destroyers moved to Sorong to try and intercept the seven or so enemy destroyers that moved there yesterday. The enemy has been moving from Sorong to both Boela and Ambon. Not sure if they are delivering supply or picking up men. The enemy moved a couple of hexes to the west, as if to set up a fast transport mission today. So the Australians missed the destroyers, but found a patrol boat and two xAKs, and sank all three ships. Interestingly, 8 torpedoes contributed to the sinkings, with the fight at 2,000 yards, being at night and 0% moonlight. A light cruiser force will move from Kendari to Ambon tonight to try to intercept the enemy there.

Troops continued to land at invasion spots. No interference. An LST grounded at Zamboanga and sank.

Battleship Alabama and heavy cruiser Frobisher bombarded Iloilo, destroying two Sonias on the ground and doing very minor base damage. A poor bombardment really.

Slow battleships Oklahoma and Nevada bombarded Zamboanga, causing 96 casualties to the garrison unit there, and moderate base damage.

Prince of Wales, two heavy cruisers, six light cruisers and four destroyers moved to Cagayan, and sank a patrol boat there. Then they bombarded, and I'll declare it to be nuclear.

More unloading at Jolo, including lots of support troops. Oklahoma and Nevada bombarded and did a good job. 202 casualties with just two tiny enemy units there. Jolo was taken easily. Unoccupied Sandakan on Borneo was also captured, as was Dumanquilas, south of Oroquieta on Mindanao. It was taken by paras.

APD Whipple was torpedoed once by I-175 near Jolo and sunk. It was returning to Balikpapan with a big transport convoy.

More cleanup at Manado. Just one enemy unit left. Same for Palembang.

Most of the valuable APAs are now leaving the Mindanao area invasion areas. The carriers will escort them, and the slow battleships, back towards Balikpapan, at least for a day. The carriers will probably remain near Jolo after that. I am going to go for Puerto Princess and Taytay next, as soon as some APAs get to Soerabaja to start loading. I also think that I will load up for Luzon as soon as the US carriers get back from Ceylon. There's still 4 days or so left before all of the carriers and battleships that got refit at Colombo will be ready to leave. Even with that time, and the week or so for the fleet to get to Soerabaja, the troops slated for Luzon will not be completely recovered from the Java campaign. I think we're going anyway. I want to press the advantage, and I think I'll be bringing enough troops to do the job, even with some disabled squads. I will wait for the carriers, though. I'll feel better about going so close to Manila and Clark with six more big carriers.
