Kitakami -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/13/2018 5:37:26 PM)

December 10th, 1941:

Watching last turn's combat replay was an exercise in intestinal fortitude. I think I may have made a mistake (putting a surface combat TF on react, and thus losing most of it), but the rest was by the book... I think. Unfortunately, John is one of those that wrote the book, and thus ship losses were high. Anyway...

Ok... I have had the turn since yesterday, but this week is being rather heavy with work-related stuff. Here are a few thoughts to get the discussion going:

1. At the beginning of turn four, the following bases are short (of double monthly requirements) on supply:
--- Portland Supply Short 1956
--- Seattle Supply Short 9186
--- Tacoma Supply Short 6168
--- Bacolod Supply Short 93
--- Iloilo Supply Short 40
--- Tacloban Supply Short 87
--- Victoria Supply Short 8602
--- Changsha Supply Short 2146
--- Chengchow Supply Short 960
--- Nanyang Supply Short 1145
--- Sining Supply Short 898
--- Tsiaotso Supply Short 2914
--- Alameda Supply Short 258
--- Pingsiang Supply Short 711
--- Ankang Supply Short 171

That is 4 more bases than the previous turn. The new ones are Portland, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Tacloban. I do not mind the Philippines being low in supply that much, as all those bases will be lost, but Seattle, Tacome, Victoria, and Alameda actually have a GREATER supply shortfall this turn than last one. I will need to twink repairs in the Americas to remedy that.

In China the supply situation seems to be somewhat stable. Not that it is good, but at least it is not deteriorating... yet.

2. At the beginning of turn four, the following industries lack raw materials:
--- Rangoon, oil for refinery Short 1840
--- Melbourne, oil for refinery Short 330
--- Komsomolsk, oil for refinery Short 800
--- Hong Kong, resources for HI Short 4375
--- Bombay, resources for HI Short 6146
--- Calcutta, resources for HI Short 10916
--- Winnipeg, resources for HI Short 1798
--- Chungking, resources for HI Short 4766
--- Kunming, resources for HI Short 1876
--- San Francisco, resources for LI Short 1142
--- Hong Kong, resources for LI Short 4375
--- Bombay, resources for LI Short 6146
--- Calcutta, resources for LI Short 10916
--- Delhi, resources for LI Short 173
--- Hyderabad, resources for LI Short 271
--- Melbourne, resources for LI Short 9820
--- Perth, resources for LI Short 1567
--- Sydney, resources for LI Short 20127
--- Winnipeg, resources for LI Short 1798
--- Batavia, resources for LI Short 910
--- Balikpapan, resources for LI Short 375
--- Kwangchowan, resources for LI Short 128
--- Soviet Union, resources for LI Short 12604

Rangoon lacking oil is a new one. India has improved slightly, which probably means it will be OK in the long run. China imporved slightly (though that ought to be temporary... John has not attacked yet). Soviet Union improved. The DEI stable. All in all, it will take time, and while that time passes, Japan will have a (mostly) free hand.

3. I lost Guam, Camiguin, Miri, Nauru Island, and Ocean Island last turn. I need to check if I have 4E bombers to attack Miri's oilfields. Also, Mersing was invaded by 16k troops, and the paratroopers were dropped in Malacca. Neither fell, and I have a chance to retake Malacca, but if I loose Mersing quickly, Singapore will fall early.

4. The following ships were lost last turn. To sum it up, it was BAD.
--- BB Mississippi sank due to the fires and floating damage.
--- CL Boise reacted against BCs... she did not have a chance!
--- DD Scout, Thanet made it as far as Borneo. Then they were caught and sunk.
--- AS Otus.
--- AVP Heron, Bellatrix.
--- AM Finch, Bittern, Quatsino.
--- PG Tulsa.
--- SS Seal, Spearfish, Sealion.
--- ARD Dewey.
--- ACM Colonel Harrison.
--- HDML P1, P2, P3.
--- TK Aletta, Britannia.
--- YO-78.
--- xAP Don Esteban, Legaspi, Candioa (could the real name be Candida?).
--- xAK Howra, Nanning, Tantalus, Talthibius, Hai Lee, Governor Wright, Si Kiang.
--- xAKL Lipis, Cebu, Lepus, Magallanes, Mauban, Montanes, Surigao, Colambugan, Princess of Cebu, Princess of Negros.

The Boise will be missed. So will the 2x HMS DDs be. The AS I'd have preferred to save. The others I can live without, I think.

5. According to Tracker, these were the plane losses for the turn:
--- B5N2 Kate 54
--- P-40E Warhawk 12
--- P-40B Warhawk 8
--- A6M2 Zero 6
--- P-36A Mohawk 5
--- F2A-3 Buffalo 4
--- SOC-1 Seagull 4
--- E13A1 Jake 3
--- B17-E Fortress 2
--- Ki-57-I Topsy 2
--- Do-24K-1 1
--- D3A1 Val 1
--- L3Y2 Tina 1
--- Ki-21-IIa Sally 1
--- Ki-27b Nate 1
--- Ki-30 Ann 1

Total losses for the turn are reported as 70 Japanese for 36 Allied. I wonder what repots John is getting, and what the truth really is :)

6. Turn 3 saw a net loss of 657 VP.

These are the things that worry me:

A. KB is still 7 hexes NE of Pearl. Subs and 4E bombers will seek them, but I have no hopes. I moved the Buffaloes from Wake and Midway to Pearl, which helped with air defense last turn, but I am fighting a losing battle.

Having said that, this is what I have ready right now:

--- F2a-3 Buffalo 14
--- F4F-3 Wildcat 11
--- P-26A _______ 5
--- P-36A Mohawk_ 12
--- P-40B Warhawk 48
--- SNJ-3 Texan__ 2

I need to get more fighters there, but I can't ship more squadrons in until KB leaves. Until then, all I can do is reinforce current squadrons with the small number of planes that I can trickle in.

B. Mersing was invaded, but the Aussies are doing their job. They will fall, but I need them to last 3-4 days at least. I am not sure if they will be able to, though.

C. The 1st Raiding Rgt (para) was dropped in Malacca. They did not take the base, fortunately. All I have there is a pair of Inf Bns, I hope they can hold until I get something heftier there.

D. John is making an early move against Wuchow, and there is not much I can do about it. We will see if I can reinforce or not.

Any and all opinions welcome!

Hawaii - Once John leaves, rest air groups until morale is 99 and then steadily replace your leaders for air groups here (and elsewhere) that are going to be for the whole war. I start with the fighters first, but your PPs may need to be used first in DEI.

Transmarine xAKs - I eventually make this class my USA to Pearl supply haulers. I start off with small TF with 1 to 3 PCs as escorts and "Don Not Refuel" set as I don't want to take any fuel from Pearl. Beware of John having some CVs up here hunting merchants or CV Sara (which I've lost to him up here). That's why a small TF to start with and steadily grow them (2 or 3) as you get more Transmarine Class back to USA.

P-40Es - I now have 3 full air groups (75 planes) by end of Feb at Pearl and the others are P-40Bs.

P-25/35 - These obsolete planes are upgraded as I want them to go into the P-38 air groups as I want two plus air groups with P-38s. John literally 'hates' the Lightnings as I swept even the Tojos from the skies of Burma last time we played as I had them at max altitude.

BFs x 2 at Darwin - I send them to Java to help there and allow you to use B-17s easier.

B-17Ds they have long legs, but no rear guns. [:-] Use them from Luzon or Singapore to hit ports (Saigon, CRB, Takao). You will need to be careful, but you can surprise John...once.

Nice to see your AAR as I have just restarted a new game and I am the Japanese and it is 14 Dec 41. It is always interesting to compare and contrast.

Aye, aye, sir! What stat(s) should be the highst?

Roger on the CVs. I lost one to Falken in transit to Oz. I will not make the same mistake twice in a row. Transports as bait? An interesting idea I had not considered...

Do you send the P-39 to Asia then, along the P-38?

Yes... I agree that is the best way to do it. Sadly at this point I have nothing to upgrade with, although I already have 17x P-38 in the pools.

Wholeheartedly agree!

Once is the operative word, yes, although sudden changes in pattern should make it more than that. I need to probe and see where he has no fighters. If he has CAP everywhere, he will not be able to sweep everywhere too, so he is bound to leave openings.

I don't think I will finish the turn today. Post-lunch food coma; my brain is not at its best.

Kitakami -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/17/2018 2:32:38 AM)

December 11th, 1941:

I have never had as much success sinking the thundering herd as John has had in this game. Kudos to him. Here is what happened last turn:

1. At the beginning of turn five, the following bases are short (of double monthly requirements) on supply:

--- Bacolod Supply Short 99
--- Iloilo Supply Short 57
--- Tacloban Supply Short 88
--- Victoria Supply Short 8537
--- Changsha Supply Short 519
--- Nanyang Supply Short 60
--- Tsiaotso Supply Short 2592
--- Wuchow Supply Short 1238
--- Alameda Supply Short 532
--- Pingsiang Supply Short 609
--- Ankang Supply Short 140

The supply situation in the Continental US improved, but only because I stopped repairs on a LOT of bases. I will have to play this scenario as Japan has to play in all games... making sure they do not overbuild or over repair, as not to have negative supply growth.

2. At the beginning of turn four, the following industries lack raw materials:

--- Melbourne oil for refinery Short 330
--- Komsomolsk oil for refinery Short 800
--- Hong Kong resources for HI Short 4375
--- Sydney resources for HI Short 12107
--- Pearl Harbor resources for LI Short 90
--- Hong Kong resources for LI Short 4375
--- Calcutta resources for LI Short 13538
--- Delhi resources for LI Short 147
--- Hyderabad resources for LI Short 270
--- Madras resources for LI Short 2326
--- Sydney resources for LI Short 12107
--- Winnipeg resources for LI Short 2510
--- Chungking resources for LI Short 3921
--- Kunming resources for LI Short 1584

Things seem to be improving, although I still need to understand the flows and lacks.

3. I lost Mersing last turn. Now I know the two Australian Bdes. are not enough to defend it even for one turn. The early fall of Singapore is a given. The question is, where will John attack next, the DEI or Burma/India?

4. Another lousy turn for the thundering herd. I can only hope that things will only improve from this point on.

--- AM Whippoorwill
--- PG Isabel, Asheville
--- SS Skipjack
--- DD Trippe, Stockton
--- TK La Estrella Caltex, Gertrude Kellogg, Manatawny, Mindanao, Hai Kwang
--- AO Trinity
--- YO YO-41, YO YO-42
--- xAP President Madison
--- xAK Yu Sang, Ethel Edwards
--- xAKL Honolulan, Oklahoman, Sagoland, Paz, Anakan, Dona Nati, Luzon, Taurus, Nootka, Regulus, Cetus, Isla Filipinas, Dos Hermanos

The tankers and destroyers will definitely be missed.

5. According to Tracker, these were the plane losses for the turn:

--- Buffalo I 8
--- P-40E Warhawk 6
--- A6M2 Zero 5
--- Ki-21-IIa Sally 5
--- Ki-27b Nate 4
--- Hurricane IIb Trop 3
--- SOC-1 Seagull 2
--- G3M2 Nell 2
--- G4M1 Betty 2
--- Ki-36 Ida 2
--- Hudson I 1
--- P-40B Warhawk 1
--- E7K2 Alf 1
--- H6K4 Mavis 1
--- L3Y2 Tina 1

Total losses for the turn are reported as 23 Japanese for 21 Allied. Total losses so far are reported as 179 Japanese for 170 Allied. Although those are not terrible figures, it is going to get worse before it gets any better.

6. Turn 5 saw a net loss of 276 VP.

These are the things that are in my mind right now:

A. KB has gone off the grid. I need to know where. I am not going to form xAKL picket lines, I find it a tad gamey as the Allies (the Japanese would not be above it, I think).

Pearl Harbor's fighter situation improved by 12 ready planes. It was not attacked last turn, and I do not think it will be attacked again:

--- F2a-3 Buffalo 15
--- F4F-3 Wildcat 12
--- P-26A _______ 5
--- P-36A Mohawk_ 18
--- P-40B Warhawk 52
--- SNJ-3 Texan__ 2

B. With Mersing lost, all I have to defend Singapore is what I was able to get in there (not much), plus the remains of the two Aus Inf Bdes. It will fall before year's end.

C. The 1st Raiding Rgt is still alive in Malacca. It shock attacked the base, but the defenders held. In fact, I do not see it anymore. If I could just keep the IJA units in Mersing in combat mode for a couple of turns, maybe three...

D. In China, the Japanese are advancing against Wuchow, Chengchow, and Yenan. I am trying to get my forces into x3 defensive terrain. Will try to make China as painful as possible. I do not know how good John is in Asian Land Warfare (TM) but my game against Falken taught me that China can be a major pain in the Imperial Japanese behind.

E. CLV Charlotte was detected by a sub on her way to Colombo, 3 hexes south of Djokjakarta. The sub missed, but they ended up in the same hex, so there is still danger. Hopefully, she will escape unscathed.

F. 224 RAF is unloading at Batavia. That ought to help with Java's defense. I decided to send the HQ there instead of to Palembang, as I am not in a position to defend Sumatra en force.

Well, that is all for now. Any and all questions and opinions welcome!

Bif1961 -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/17/2018 2:18:11 PM)

AKL skirmish line is historic for Japan as they used armed fishing trawlers as a first line of warning off the Home Islands. If you have no HR against it you could always discuss it with your opponent.

tarkalak -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/17/2018 3:03:26 PM)

I guess you can justify a similar development around the West Coast as US fishing trawlers, who are, you know actually fishing. [:D]

Or were they grounded for the war?

zuluhour -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/22/2018 11:48:59 AM)

bump

Kitakami -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/23/2018 1:08:46 PM)

Sorry for how slow this game is. It is my fault. RL is not cooperating with leisure, and as I am not used to playing the Allies, I need to double check things twice. Anyway:

December 12th:

This turn will set the mood for the DEI Campaign. I have located a carrier task force steaming towards Java. I had two choices to make. Either pile everything I have in the region in one SCTF and try to guess where it is going, or separate my forces in 3 SCTF abd cover more area. I did the latter. We will see how I fared.

zuluhour -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/23/2018 1:17:03 PM)

I agree with your decision. I would hope you checked the skippers. I just
had a miserable experience with the Dutch navy. I think their failure was in
part due to leadership.

ps. I really like the topo map. Love to have the file for that. I was confused
which map was which last time I checked Chem Kids.

Kitakami -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/23/2018 1:32:58 PM)

1. At the beginning of turn six, the following bases are short (of double monthly requirements) on supply:

--- Bacolod Supply Short 105
--- Iloilo Supply Short 77
--- Tacloban Supply Short 92
--- Victoria Supply Short 8541
--- Changsha Supply Short 3640
--- Changteh Supply Short 584
--- Nanyang Supply Short 353
--- Tsiaotso Supply Short 2518
--- Wuchow Supply Short 813
--- Alameda Supply Short
--- Pingsiang Supply Short 2537
--- Ankang Supply Short 172

The supply situation in China and the Philippines is worsening (expected) and in the Continental US slightly improving.

2. At the beginning of turn six, the following industries lack raw materials:

--- Rangoon oil for refinery Short 528
--- Melbourne oil for refinery Short 330
--- Komsomolsk oil for refinery Short 800
--- Hong Kong resources for HI Short 4375
--- Winnipeg resources for HI Short 1710
--- Chungking resources for HI Short 3138
--- Kunming resources for HI Short 1584
--- San Francisco resources for LI Short 3116
--- Naga resources for LI Short 147
--- Rangoon resources for LI Short 1446
--- Hong Kong resources for LI Short 4375
--- Perth resources for LI Short 1020
--- Sydney resources for LI Short 13208
--- Winnipeg resources for LI Short 1710
--- Kwangchowan resources for LI Short 278
--- Soviet Union resources for LI Short 11435

I still need to understand the flows and lacks.

3. I lost the following bases last turn:

--- Tarawa: expected. I wish I could have setup a trap. Alas, too risky.
--- Rabaul: also expected. Trying to get the survivors out of there by airlift.
--- Manus: nothing to raise an eyebrow for.
--- Kweiteh: this was a speed bump, nothing more. That I did contest it cost the IJA one day.
--- Ternate: the envelopment of Java has begun. Hopefully my naval version of the Charge of the Light Brigade (TM) will slow things down, even a little bit.

4. Thundering herd have indeed slowed down... mainly because most ships that were worth something have already been destroyed.

--- AM Lark
--- TK Semiramis
--- xAP Neptuna
--- xAKL Hai Sang, xAKL Don Jose, xAKL Bisayas, xAKL Latouche, xAKL Palawan, xAKL Princessa

The tanker and troop transport will be missed.

5. According to Tracker, these were the plane losses for the turn:

--- Buffalo I 7
--- Hurricane IIb Trop 5
--- P-40E Warhawk 5
--- Blenheim I 3
--- P-40B Warhawk 3
--- A6M2 Zero 3 1
--- L3Y2 Tina 2
--- Ki-32 Mary 2
--- Ki-36 Ida 2
--- Ki-48-Ib Lily 2
--- Blenheim IV 1
--- B5N2-C Kate 1
--- Ki-21-IIa Sally 1
--- Ki-43-Ib Oscar 1
--- Ki-57-I Topsy 1

Total losses for the turn are reported as 15 Japanese for 24 Allied. Total losses so far are reported as 194 Japanese for 195 Allied. Allied bomber losses this turn will be heavy... trying to slow down the IJA troops coming out of Mersing.

6. Turn 6 saw a net loss of 313 VP.

These are the things that are in my mind right now:

A. KB is still off the grid. Until I find it, I will be VERY conservative with ship movements.

Pearl Harbor's fighter situation improved by 17 ready planes. I can breathe easier now, I guess.

--- F2A-3 Buffalo 16
--- F4F-3 Wildcat 12
--- P-26A _______ 5
--- P-36A Mohawk_ 21
--- P-40B Warhawk 65
--- SNJ-3 Texan__ 2

B. Singapore's Strategic situation is dire. The airdrop disrupted rail movements, as you can see below. Trying to destroy the paras, but I do not know how long until the bij IJA units come out of Mersing and render the exercise moot.

Kitakami -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/23/2018 1:41:28 PM)

C. In China, the Japanese continue advancing against Wuchow, Chengchow, and Yenan. Yenan will fall, no way to defend it. Sian, on the other hand, must not be lost. In the south, I am scrambling to set up defensive positions, but the IJA's advance towards Wuchow won't be stopped. I do not have enough. I will have to delay and/or stop the IJA in the mountains.

D. CLV Charlotte evaded the sub and is now on her way to Colombo. Her air complement is not much, but it sure is better than nothing. I will probably land the bombers and fill her with fighters, at least for now. If things get dire, I will land the fighters too and send her to Cape Town. Easier to get a destroyed air unit back than to replace her.

E. 224 RAF is is now at Batavia. I now have torpedo capabilities in two Java airfields. That ought to be unexpected.

F. A lone IJN DD scout is in Palembang. I am certain invasion forces are not far behind. Against John I had no chance to defend Sumatra. I decided to reinforce India instead.

Well, that is about it. Any and all questions and comments are welcome, as usual.

HansBolter -> RE: BTS/BTSL against John 3rd: What was Kitakami thinking?!?!?!? (5/24/2018 11:38:44 AM)

Tough luck on the gunnery die rolls.

I would have expected Renown and Houston to perform better against a single BC screening all those carriers.

Aye, me too. Problem is, I now have a very damaged BC, and the CVs are going to have a field day. Them be the breaks, I guess.

Not sure she would go down, no hits below the water line? engine damage? Fires maybe light.......

Dec 13th, 1941:

The battlecruiser did survive the encounter, but it will not survive the airstrikes I am affraid. I do not have assets close enough to scare the CVs away, sadly. Here is the current status:

Also, there is an enemy SCTF with a reported 2xBC+2CA in it a few hexes away. I do not know if it is the damaged enemy ships, or if it is reinforcements. If it is the last, Not much that I can do.

I would think about using flank, I think she can handle it for a day.

1. At the beginning of the turn, the following bases were short (of double monthly requirements) on supply:

--- Bacolod Supply Short 111
--- Iloilo Supply Short 97
--- Tacloban Supply Short 96
--- Georgetown Supply Short 198
--- Victoria Supply Short 8572
--- Changsha Supply Short 7098
--- Changteh Supply Short 2488
--- Nanyang Supply Short 51
--- Pakhoi Supply Short 184
--- Tsiaotso Supply Short 2133

The supply situation improved slightly again. Tracker helps tons to keep tabs on things.

2. At the beginning of the turn, the following industries lacked raw materials:

--- Melbourne oil for refinery Short 330
--- Komsomolsk oil for refinery Short 800
--- Manila resources for HI Short 732
--- Hong Kong resources for HI Short 4375
--- Calcutta resources for HI Short 10625
--- Kunming resources for HI Short 1584
--- Georgetown resources for LI Short 475
--- Hong Kong resources for LI Short 4375
--- Calcutta resources for LI Short 10625
--- Melbourne resources for LI Short 7992

This mod has been tightened on initial oil and resources, it seems. It will take a bit more time to get everything rolling.

3. Only one base was lost: Aparri. Sadly, that tempo will not last.

4. Naval losses increased again. My idea for seeking combat against the carrier TF was to make John a bit more cautious. We will see if it worked, although I do not have high hopes.

--- DD Vampire
--- AP Henderson
--- TK Sunchaser
--- xAKL Chengtu, xAKL Kanchow, xAKL Jade, xAKL Kanlaon II
--- xAK Demosthenes, xAK Hanyang, xAK Havildar, xAK Ming Sang, xAK Ravnaas, xAK Katrina Luckenbach, xAK Barbara Olson, xAK Sataria, xAK Dorothy Philips

The tanker and troop transport will be missed.

5. According to Tracker, these were the plane losses for the turn:

--- P-40E Warhawk 7
--- Ki-32 Mary 7
--- P-40B Warhawk 3
--- A6M2 Zero 2
--- E13A1 Jake 2
--- Ki-21-IIa Sally 2
--- DC-2 1
--- Buffalo I 1
--- Hudson I 1
--- B5N2-C Kate 1
--- G4M1 Betty 1
--- H6K4 Mavis 1
--- Ki-43-Ib Oscar 1

Total losses for the turn are reported as 17 Japanese for 13 Allied. Total losses so far are reported as 211 Japanese for 209 Allied. for some odd reason, the difference in airframe losses is not that great... yet.

6. Turn 6 saw a net loss of 151 VP.

These are the things that are in my mind right now:

A. KB is still off the grid. Not much I can do about it, except to keep out of its way. Hopefully it will surface where it can't do much damage.

B. I will try one more time to catch the carriers in the DEI. I do not have much hope, though.

C. Palembang has been invaded. It won't last long.

D. Singapore's Strategic situation continues to be complicated. The paradrop was something I will have to take notes of... in case I need to do something similar in a future game.

Didn't think of that. Thanks!
