BTW, avenge is the verb (avenged in the past tense). Revenge is the noun - there is no "revenged". [:-]

Thank you, I know you have given a head-up on this before. Shall try to improve myself. Not easy...[;)]..

Not easy to give back on this opponent, either - he's driving a hard bargain...[:@]...So were the Japanese, too..

If you push too much forward into the defense of Burma and Rangoon he may land behind you at Cox's Bazaar or Chittagong and cut off your line of retreat and supplies.

That one is a bit too brief. I may have to cancel my subscription to the Brisbane Evening Star if it continues to abstain from using ink, paper or electrons to save money.

It's just an image of the Star of Brisbane, taken from Earth, 308 light years away.

He will push harder in Burma once he has completed all his conquests in DEI and Malaya.

A bit early for CV Essex. Was that Exeter with Dorsetshire?

You are probably correct. We shall check with MacArthur's press officer. They (or our desk) are not too familiar with the Royal Navy.
Or the USN, for that matter.

No test this time....- or was it..?.. [;)]..Or...have we been intentionally misinformed...?

BBfanboy -> RE: Rookie II - Saving MacArthur (1/25/2019 11:08:17 PM)

Cocos Island has had its moments of excitement. During WWI the German raider Emden visited there to destroy the wireless station. While the landing party were ashore, Australian CL Sydney came over the horizon and took Emden under fire. The 6" guns of Sydney gave a range and punch advantage that doomed Emden. Emden's movements were probably also restricted within the arms of the atoll.

Emden was wrecked, but not sunk in deep water so the Germans landed their 105mm guns and called for help. I forget the details of their epic journey but they made it back to Germany on the other side of the world!

Yes, interesting story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Emden

Fred

BBfanboy -> RE: Rookie II - Saving MacArthur (1/25/2019 11:31:49 PM)

Hmmm, it appears from that article that Emden's guns were not landed, but I remember reading about a German raider that did land her guns. Perhaps it was the one caught in the Rufiji River in Africa and destroyed by the 15" guns of the monitor Abercrombie.

EDIT: Boy my memory is getting bad. I didn't get the monitor right or the size of the guns, but the raider Köenigsburg was the raider and it did land some of its guns after being sunk in shallow water.

Bif1961 -> RE: Rookie II - Saving MacArthur (1/26/2019 10:10:52 PM)

On of the Emden's guns in in a park in Sydney as a memorial to the men of the Sydney and their exploits. I stayed in a hotel over looking the memorial when I visited Sydney in 2004.
