My question is about sweeping mines at an enemy base with coastal guns, for example, Truk. I did eventually clear those mines, but lost several minesweepers to the guns. Now, much later in the game, I am considering the same at Pescadores and other bases closer to the Japanese heartland.

Can I protect the minesweepers if I add some muscle to their TF -- say a cruiser or even a BB? Or would I simply risk my capital ships to the minefield? But without those big ships, the minesweepers are easy prey for the enemy guns. How do players manage this?

To me the only reason to sweep a minefield is if you intend to invade the base. No?

So, this is the simple procedure for this activity:

1) Prepare the base to be invaded. This involves bombardment from sea/air.

2) Invade. Simple.

Well OK, there's a bit more than that to do, but you get my drift. Once the base is prepped, the amphibious assault TF goes in to do its thing. Put your sweepers in this TF, they will sweep the base before the landings occur, but after TF vessels pre-bombard. Therefore within this TF you should embed BB's, CA's, DD's and whatnot. These will conduct a preinvasion bombardment and then in addition fire to suppress any coastal guns that may be firing at your sweepers.

That's JMHO, and how I've been doing it. YMMV.[;)]

I would sink any ACMs first and wait a few turns for the field to deteriorate. Alfred if I set the destination of the minesweeper to the hex I want to sweep and select remain on station will it continue to do a normal sweep or a transit sweep?

Assuming you have at least one of the 4 legitimate ship types which sweep a channel, the Minesweeper TF will do a transit sweep along each single hex of travel from it's departure hex to the destination hex. At the destination hex the legitimate ship types in the Minesweeper TF will conduct a proper full sweep each turn. As it is a Minesweeper TF it will attempt to sweep (subject to OP and only sea hexes being involved) the 6 adjacent hexes to the destination hex.

A Local Minesweeper TF will behave the same except that at the destination hex, the TF only sweeps the destination hex not any of the adjacent hexes.

To fully clear a minefield will usually require more than one turn of sweeping although this is subject to the size of the minefield, size and composition quality of the Minesweeper TF. Hence the "Remain on Station" order is appropriate.

6. Sweeping the adjacent 6 hexes is dependent on the Minesweeper TF's available OP. Depending on what other actions have consumed OPs only some of the adjacent hexes may be swept and these may not contain a minefield whereas a minefield may exist undetected in one of the adjacent unswept hexes.

Alfred

To sweep a hex of mines protected by CD guns your best best is to heavily bomb or bombard the hex to knock out the defending guns, reduce morale, raise disruption. Starvation works too.

I'm assuming a bombardment TF with DMS is the best solution to sweep a hex of mines protected by CD guns?

I think embedded sweepers will only sweep a channel for the bombarding ships, not attempt to clear the whole minefield.

Well yes but still seems the best option if a dedicated MS TF would get pummeled...
