Good to see you back, John. I hope all is well on the domestic front.

Hey, glad you're back and posting! It's a good day for the forum when you're contributing.

How's your mom doing? Best wishes for her and all your family.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (8/14/2018 5:59:16 PM)

Just came back from 4-5 days out in Wichita. Totally depressing. I begin to understand some people's assisted suicide mentality. Don't necessarily agree but I do have more understanding. Quality of life is nothing and pain continues to build as the body shuts down slowly. Isn't anything I would wish on anyone.

School is getting ready to start and I'll have more time to devote to an AAR at that time. Anarcho takes huge risks and I have not been able to make him pay for it---YET! We are working on it though...

To this point, John, I assumed that this posting of yours was some slam on Wichita, Kansas in general. And I totally agreed with it. [:D]

On a serious note: I'm sorry for your family's issues and your mother's illness. Having lost my father two days before Christmas 2017, I know what that long-suffering dynamic is like for the family. May God grant you all strength to endure this trial.

March 2-3, 1942
Ceylon

Exactly one day behind the schedule set on Dec 7, 1941, the Japanese come thundering ashore at Koggala. There is no opposition. The base falls without a fight and a Zero and Oscar Fighter unit each move in to take the burden off of the Japanese CVLs.

The 3rd sees a raid by 12 bombers that is wiped out by 31 Zeros. After the day, 75 ships are ordered back to Port Blair since their cargo is fully unloaded. NICE!

The 4th shall see the landing at Jaffna. There is plenty of CAP to cover the shipping as well as 6 CA and 8 DD providing a screen for the 100 ship TF.

Air Recon has yielded the interesting info that Akyab is abandoned. A TF will land tomorrow to take the base. There is a Para unit, 2 Base Forces, and a small Infantry unit in the Fast TF. Two follow-on convoys are already headed there with two Air Flotillas. Getting this base for no fight is a huge boon for the growing offensive...

At Singapore, a huge TF loads up 3 ID, 6 Tank Reg, an Air HQ, 6 AA units, and a few other tidbits. Destiation: Vizagatapan.

March 4, 1942
Ceylon

The Japanese thunder ashore at Jaffna and crush a small unit in the hex. LRCAP from the CVLs place 27-41 Fighters over the hex and they effectively deal with two un-escorted morning and then two un-escorted afternoon strikes from the mainland. We bag nearly 30 planes for the day. The base will fall tomorrow, with shipping mostly unloaded, and 50 Fighters flying in.

The two Japanese bases will begin expansion and all the Infantry and Armor will take each end of the island FAST. Colombo is easiest due to being clear terrain. It says that there are 17,000+ troops at both Colombo and Trincomalee. Figure a total bag of 40,000 troops for the operation. NICE!

The CTF centering around Hiryu and Soryu plaster an escaping AS and AM. They go down and the CVs will move to the west coast of India for some hunting.

Recon flights cover all Indian bases from Madras south. WANT Sean to think we're landing there and not Cocanada/Viza.

Bearcat2 -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (9/3/2018 1:44:36 PM)

I have a question concerning your G6 CVL's

I looked at the conversion to a CV and was wondering how you came up with the values.

The 34,400t Akagi went from 80,000 sq ft hangers to 93,000 sq ft hangers, 41,300t[ about a 25% increase] after her conversion[Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945]; assuming that configuration is a basis for a G6:
The G6 goes from 30 plane capacity to 63; wouldn't a larger hanger than the Akagi proportion make it too top heavy, especially given the deck armor and the tonnage increase is too small?

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (9/3/2018 2:32:04 PM)

School starts tomorrow and I finally will get some time to do regular work on the AAR.

The G.6 hull was based on nearly the same hull design as the Soryu/Hiryu. That was the philosophy and reasoning for the 63 plane configuration. Built on a cruiser hull, fast, but probably VERY cramped.

Hello All.

Am out visiting my sister and Mom. We're shifting Mom to Assisted Living. Just too unsteady and frail for my sister to continue housing. Tears my sister up but I think it is the right choice. More and more issues as things begin to shut down. We'll see how it plays out.

At any rate, I am in Wichita from Tues-Fri and plan to do a mass update. With school started, I have slightly more time to work on an AAR soooooo the intention is to get going and Post regularly.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (9/13/2018 5:13:18 PM)

OK. Time to do some updating.

I know how she feels my father-in-law was living with us after other relatives could no longer handle him after a few weeks. He stayed with us for a year+ and then he needs became to much for the untrained layman to deal with and he was put in an assisted living and within 6 months a nursing home then within another six months passed away. He had PSD and I have nevrer heard of it and it is rather rare.

April 12, 1942
Global Overview

The war continues forward in a semi-agreeable manner. I've become used to me opponent's bold-as-HELL usage of his warships and have begun to anticipate his moves. This is a good thing. As we know, all opponents have playing styles and understanding them is the first step to BEATING them.

HOT SPOTS
1. Aleutians--I moved into the Aleutians in a pretty big way. WE captured everything from Adak west and were in the process of attacking Umnak when the entire Allied CV Force arrived. Considering the entire strike elements of the Imperial Fleet are in the IO, there wasn't much I could do. Only vessels of note up there were Yamato, Junyo, 2 CVE and a Command Cruiser. I had a sense that something was happening so pulled the warships back just in time to avoid the Carriers. Though they waylaid a TF of AKs, nothing terrible occurred.

Sean looks for targets of opportunity and I realized he would come back up north if I continued to make trouble. We kept a lot of movement going on up there to seel this. In doing so, I might create an opportunity elsewhere. With this in mind I ordered Junyo and the 2 CVE south to Kwajalein and then Lunga for operations to the south.

Sure enough, as units began rescuing the 7th ID and Imperial Guards Brigade at Umnak, I picked up the return of the Allied Fleet. Got enough time to retire to Adak and get under 100+ Fighters. Managed to pull about 50% of those two valuable units and his CV came up for nothing. They retired on the 11th...

Will use a Fast TF to lift more troops off. Japan is done with any offensive work in the Aleutians for a while...

2. Coral Sea--The Allies have several STF here and have been moving troops around to Luganville. If the Aleutians didn't have much, then the Coral Sea had little-to-nothing. A force of 8 DDs was it. My opponent figured this out fairly quickly and took advantage. He took advantage until the Junyo TF arrived. While only having 100 planes, this small TF (Junyo, 2 CVE, 3 CL, and 12 DDs) managed to cause some serious damage to the Luganville TFs. Over three days, the TF sank 6 AP, 4 AK, 2 DDs and damaged 8-10 more ships. NICE!

The Junyo TF will soon be reinforced by 3 CVL, 2 CAV, with 10 escorts. Detached from the IO Fleet, this strong unit carries over 150 planes and is fully repaired. The TF stopped at Singapore for ten days and repaired everything. Currently the unit hasn't been spotted and it is approaching Merauke on the south side of New Guinea.

3. China--HUGE events here, after taking the northern resource and oil centers, I planned to rest the troops some before the next offensive. While doing this I noticed a move occurring where Chinese units were moving north to form a new defensive line below the freshly captured Sian and up to the Himalayas. This weakening of the line was really noticed along the Industrial Centers around Changsha.

Very quickly, two Japanese IDs punched through the railine coming up from Kweilin. Four IDs moved up from the south to threaten the base SE of Shaoyang. IN a surprising move, Sean began a head long retreat out of the area. Japan took Changsha without a fight. BANZAI! Didn't want to wreck units attacking that urban center and Sean quite obligingly simply let me have it.

A large stack of 12-14 Chinese units still held Shaoyang and so we moved to take care of them. Nearly 200 IJA bombers began hitting the Chinese as six IDs moved in. On April 12th, they were hit with a 17-1 assault and the Chinese retreated north into the trees. For a cost of 2,000 Japanese, over 27,000 Chinese were killed/captured. NICE!

There is another stack south of Sian surrounded and about to be forced to surrender as well. Troops here are from six Corps, six HQ, and a couple of smaller units. Got to simply keep killing Chinese troops!

4. India--Ceylon fell after an 18 days campaign. Over 45,000 Allied troops including two Indian Divisions and 2 Aussie Brigades surrendered. Have now crushed the 10,000 troops at Diego Garcia, North Male, and Addu Atoll. The Supply line is severed going east-west to Australia.

Currently have six ID and six Tank Brigades in India. Have taken Cocanada, Viza, and Cuttack. Am threatening Raipur and moving north. LOTS of Allied aircraft are active (200+ Fighters and 150+ Bombers) and I am planning to begin a massive aerial fight to attrit these forces.

The Kido Butai is comprised of 6 CV, 3 CVL, 4 Kongos, 2 CC, and about 30 other ships. They just repaired and refuelled at the very nice base of Colombo and are going hunting in the Western IO. My opponent just bombarded Diego with 3 SLOW 'R' Class BBs and I want to CRUSH them. Going hunting...

5. Leftovers--In a span of four days all but one holdout in the DEI fell. Manila yielded 77,000 POWs, then Ambon fell (5,000 POWs), and lastly Macassar (7,000 POWs). All that is left for resistance is Batavia where the entire Javan fighting force withdrew into. Two Japanese ID be-seige this target and it will fall when two IDs from Manila arrive.

That is the overall state-of-the-state.

Reader Thoughts?

April 27, 1942
Global Overview

The expansion of the perimeter is nearly complete with the glaring exception of NW Aussieland. The Indian Campaign is going reasonably well and it has been a calmer two weeks as my opponent does his April CV upgrades.

NoPac
Everything has settled down nicely here. After pulling about 50% of the 7th ID and Imperial Guards Brigade from Kodiak, my opponent has been fixated on taking out the remaining troops there. LOTS of small units--like partial Regiments and Battalions--have moved in but are finding it exceedingly difficult to tackle my dug-in and well supplied defenders. The 27th saw an Allied Shock Attack tat got 1-4 results and saw an Allied unit destroyed during the attack. NICE!

Just brought in CD units for the bases and landed at Ulak to begin a support AF to help Adak and Amchitka. No fleet commitment up here by the Japanese presently.

CenPac
No action whatsoever.

SoPac
The Junyo CV TF came down here and smashed a convoy at Luganville sinking 6 large AKs,a DD, and smacking three more DDs hard. After this attack, the TF was called back to Japan.

Port Moresby's AF is 100% damaged and has been for over a month. Looks like the units are out of supply. We will move soon to capture this base and force 10 units to surrender. Two IDs are presently being pulled from China to come down and handle this job.

DEI
The only Allied base left is Batavia. Somehow it is still supplied and has 45 units in it. I brought two IDs to the fight and one collapsed on the first attack. CRAP! Currently have two full strength IDs about to unload at Merak. They come from the Philippine Campaign.

NW Australia
Currently plan to take all the NW Aust bases using 4 ID and 5 Brigade/Regiments. Everyone is over 50% prep presently and will no 'go' until we're over 65-70%.

India Ocean
Have brought in reinforcements to garrison Diego Garcia and Ceylon. The reinforcements have allowed for me to finally bring the army's full weight into India as three IDs, 2 Tank Regiments, 3 Engineer Regiments, and 3 Air HQ are all moving on ships to land and augment the campaign.

Have used Colombo to repair a bunch of warships. Only once have I seen a 4EB in the last month or so. He tried to hit the shipping at Colombo and bombers got smacked pretty hard by 50+ Fighters on CAP and 4 AA units on the ground.

India
Slow expansion of the lodgement moving north and east from Viza. In a HUGE development Howrah fell on the FIRST attack!

Using my opponent's aggressiveness against him, I have laid a trap that he is driving into with his best Tank units (7th Armored, 254th/255th Armored). I plan to crush the within the next 3-5 days and then continue encircling Calcutta.

The Kido Butai (Akagi, Amagi, Hiryu, Soru, Sho, and Zui + three CVLs have been west of India and have caught 12-18 ships sinking them while at the same time doing Sweeps over Bombay and preparing Port Strikes for Karachi and Bombay.

My Oscars SUCKS against Hurricanes and P-40s so I have shifted to Sweeps from Viza (AF-2) and Cuttack (AF-2) as well as my CVs to beat-up the Allied Fighters. Here is the attritional war I so seek and we are serously locking horns right now.

China
Have all of Northern China from Sian (along the river) going north.

The industrial cities in the center (Changsha) are controlled by Japan as well.

Am currently getting ready to take Chihkiang. Attacked last turn and got a 2-1 dropping Forts to ZERO.

Surrounded a Chinese stack of 12 units SE if Sian and they finished being destroyed yesterday. Twelve units with a total of 30,000 Chinese surrenders.

Home Isles
Junyo, 3 CVL, and 2 CAV are refitting presently. Hiyo arrives in 3 days. All Japan's BBs are about to arrive and do some quick repairs. When everyone is good, the massed TFs will move to the North Pacific to stir up trouble.

Hello All.

I've been trying to do a weekly update but the inevitable finally occurred last Wednesday when my sister called and told me that Mom had died. It is a good thing. She was so frail and in so much pain, I found hardly a tear when the news came in. My faith really sustains me presently. Mom was strong in hers and one can only hope that we are right in this. Won't know until that moment. Right?

The funeral was yesterday and we drove back from Manhattan, KS today.

Just got in and sent Sean our first turn in six days.

It has been a long 11 months since Mom's cancer was discovered. She fought the good fight but there was only one way for it to go. Don't have any parents now. Very strange feeling and reality. Am sure many of you understand.

Appreciate you and will do an update pretty soon since all kinds of HELL is breaking loose throughout the map!

Combat Report
May 18, 1942

The war progresses well as events continue to unfold. I KNOW (Spidey Senses active) that the enemy will spring forward sometime very soon. As aggressive as Anarcho is, there can be no doubt that this will occur sooner rather then later.

I just completed a decoy sweep by my smaller CV TF (2 CV--the new Junyo and Hiyo, 4 CVL, and 2 CAV) of the Aleutians. Sean was gathering forces again and bringing in some additional reinforcements to Umnak. Two bombardment groups have been hitting Umnak regularly. My hope with the sweep was to distract my enemy from action elsewhere. The enemy immediately cleared the area with the loss of 2 AKL and a Tanker. I know that the enemy's CV TF should be just finishing their upgrades so I wanted to make Sean look up here.

Mission accomplished as the TF does its work, takes few casualties, and rapidly disengages moving towards Truk. Waiting at Truk are the Japanese BBs. Sincve early-March, Port Moresby has been cut off from supply by growing Japanese bases at Lae, Milne Bay, and Rabaul. The 14th ID has just been bought out of Manchuria and will soon load for the journey to the South Pacific. A total of ten Allied units sit at Port Moresby and they shall be MINE! KB-2 and the Battlefleet will cover the operation. Over the next 10-14 days, aircraft will begin gathering so IF the Allies bring their CVs to the show, it will encounter the 300 CV planes as well as at least 200-250 more Land-Based Aircraft. Figure the invasion should occur in early-June.

On the other side of New Guinea, NW Australia will be a target at about the same time. Want a little synchonocity for these operations!

The only problem with these plans is the DAMNED DUTCH at Batavia! My enemy chose the unique option of withdrawing their entire force into this base. Normally, I would think that this would be an easy nut to crack but over 45 units sit there and they are holding out (Forts are now 0) against no less then FIVE Japanese ID, 5 Artie Regiments, and three Army HQ. The troops have ramped up from the two ID initially deployed and now augmented by the troops that conquered the Philippines. For over a month, 3 Daitai of Betty/Nells and 2 Sentai of Sallys have been plastering this base. Amazingly, it still has supply. Don't how but it does. A sixth ID has arrived and we'll see if that tips the balance in Japan's favor. Once these IDs are done, they shall move to Soerabaja and look to Australia.

The India Campaign has gone swimmingly. The initial landing force has been massively expanded to include nine IDs, six TK Reg, and a monstrerous amount of support units. Sean has fought it off as best he can. The biggest hang-up was being limited to a useless Sz-1 Port at Viza to funnal all the troops and supplies through! About ten days ago Sean lost Chittagong and that really opened things up. The Allies are waging a fighting withdrawal. May 17th saw the fall of Calcutta. GREAT! The goal is to build a wall of troops from Calcutta--Asanol--north to stop the withdrawal of the Allied troop to the east. There are over 20 units now considered to be behind enemy lines. Within that zone is the Burma ID and at least two Indian IDs plus lots of support units. The goal, as stated from Day ONE, is to eliminate as many units as possible, pull as many resources out as possible, and stockpile the additional HI. Once we have Asanol, this should really happen with noticeable effect.

The Kido Butai (6 CV and 3 CVL) staged a raid in late-April that bagged several small convoys of ships on the west coast of India. It puzzled me as to there not being more ships present where it suddenly dawned on me that there is a natural location to easily pull shipping back into. SOCOTRA! Myt recon showed two convoys moving away to the west when the CVs entered the area. They then--seemingly--disappeared. Same thing with the 'R-Class' British BBs happened. Now I get it. The Japanese TF left Chittagong two days ago. They shall refuel at Sabang and then move to Diego Garcia. No warning will occur. The TF will go to total Emcon when it leaves DG. The goal will be to make a massive shipping strike at this location with little-to-no warning. Hope to find lots of Allied shipping and the Brit BBs. That would be a very nice addition to the current shipping losses Sean has had. In case you do not know, the enemy has lost OVER 500 ships as of May 15th. CRAZY!

China looks great. Having learned my lesson from Dan, Sean is now crying over it. He does not like land warfare like me and was not prepared for an all-out assault upon the Chinese position. Northern China is Japanese, the Central Heartland Cities are gone, and now Japan assaults from the south moving north. The offensive will not stop. China will not be allowed to get up off the matt. It has lost most of its oil, resources, and HI and now the Burma Road is gone. Good luck China. Better start learning Japanese!

OK. That is the basic overview of current and planned Japanese Operations.

Have spent portions of last weekend and this weekend up the Poudre Canyon letting my eldest hunt. Little John got tages for both an elk and a deer. So far there has been no luck with the mighty hunters. I have stayed down in camp and have cooked for everyone while enjoying a bit of R&R. I'll put a plug in for our location: Glen Echo Resort. LOVELY place and a favorite among my family.

With everything done with my Mom, I shall be able to return to regular AAR updates. Looks like this is the right time now anyway so you all can look forward to that.

May 19, 1942

Add Comilla to the fallen list. Japan's 4th ID routes, 12-1 attack, an Indian Brigade and six Base Forces from this target. Next stop Dacca.

Have troops about to enter Diamond Harbor. Grab that and we'll open Calcutta up for business. That will be a very welcome development.

Jamshedphur has two IDs coming in from the east and two advancing from the west. Expect to take that city pretty quickly as there are 12 units in it but none of them appear to have any serious combat firepower.

pws1225 -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (10/27/2018 9:45:44 PM)

Nice! The industry in Calcutta along with the resources of southeast India and oil from Magwe make a nice addition to the Empire. This puts you in a great position to take all of China and harvest a ton of VPs for all those Chinese LCUs. And in case those goodies aren't enough, you'll be able to buy out around 8-10 highly experienced IDs to use in the defense of the Empire in the late game. Things are looking good John. [8D]

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (10/30/2018 12:10:11 PM)

May 18-22, 1942
Indian Theatre of Operations

With on exception, the last four days of the Indian Offensive have been outstanding. Ledo, Rajshashi, and Diamond Harbor have all fallen. Troops are moving throughout Eastern India without issue and Dacca/Darjeeling (my favorite tea) are soon to added to the list. Three Tank Regiments are freely moving around the Raipur area and work to interdict the rail lines connecting Allied India from the active area of operations.

Currently there are major Allied concentrations at Jamshedphur and Asanol. The Imperial Guards moved into Jamshedphur to see what was present in the base. They discovered the American 40th Ind Div plus a pair of Indian IDs and several Tank units. YIKES! The Imperial Guards held against the first Allied attack and got driven from the hex with the second assault. Too bad. The 21st ID would have joined the Imperials the next day. OK. The hex between Asanol and Jamshedphur now has the Guard, 21st ID, 2 Tank Reg, and will soon gain another Inf Division. Want to keep these two bases separate so they can be handled one at a time.

The fall of Diamond Harbor is huge. Six DMS are moving in the clear the mines so Calcutta can be opened up. I've got three convoys waiting for the entrance to be cleared so they can unload troops and supplies to directly impact the fighting.

Initially, there were a number of units at Raiphur holding that base. My free-wheeling Tank Regiments have drawn a number of these troops away. Currently two Japanese IDs are finishing unloading at Viza. I had hoped to draw units towards the fighting in Eastern India. This has happened. This new force of 2 ID and several supporting units will now move north and secure Raiphur forcing the enemy to make more hard choices.

One additional comment is the supply and fuel windfall I've experienced in the capture of Chittagong and Calcutta. Between the two captures, Japan gained nearly 125,000 supply and 75,000 fuel. All that truly helps the continuing offensive.

Air-to-Air is pretty hot and both sides scoring frequently in losses. I can take those losses presently and the enemy cannot, We welcome this and hope it continues.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/1/2018 9:56:59 PM)

I haven't been Posting screen shots due to the new computer's Paint 3D program. I HATE new/updated programs and just forced myself to figure it out.

Here is my first try with showing eastern India.

In the last few days, the Japanese have crossed with the 18th Brit ID and 40th US ID. Though a surprise, I am ecstatic to have found these units in play. Better to know where they ARE then not know whatsoever.
