China looks GLORIOUS. The Chinese just got driven out of Ankang and have had their paaaa-tooty kicked out of two hexes in the south. To say that casualties have been pretty extreme for the Chinese is a bit of an understatement. I'll go back to the 20th:

20th 1 Corps Surrenders--355 Squads lost.
21st 1270 Squads destroyed as hexes 80,49 and 79,49 are taken.
22nd Capture 80,49 and drive more troops out of 79,49--total of 575 Squads with 2 Corps Surrendering
23rd Take Ankang in a 9-1 assault, drive out all Chinese inflicting 12,819 Cas with 952 Squads lost.

Total Squads destroyed in four days of operations: 3,152. Even for the Chinese---WOW!

Let us continue adding to this total:

24th 33 Squads
25th 257 Squads
26th 145 Squads

3,152 + 435 = 3,587 Chinese Squads Destroyed in SEVEN days.

I like to 'cluster' my warship construction. Usually I single out one major ship and then adjust construction around it. Some ships I shall accelerate and other I slow a few days or more. Here, I singled out Ryujo and BB Musashi to cluster my ships around. Just got a new DD today and look at what comes in close to these two vessels.

Within a ten day period Japan will gain 1 BB, 1 CVL, 1 CL, and 4 DDs.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/20/2018 3:58:13 AM)

June 28, 1942

The Allies do something not expected. They spread their fleet some out right-to-left (west-to-east). They seek to bar the door. The Japanese continue to slide step westward with the warship. The support ships, on the other hand, are not fast or maneuverable.

One TF of 2 AO and 2 PC gets nailed and sees all four ships sunk.

While sad, things look to improve as the STFs move east without interference. The CVLs make their move without issue. Their Kates are flown off to Lunga so the hangars are empty.

We're now getting close to Land-Based air. Nearly 60 Zeros move up from Lunga to Ndeni. The Sz-2 AF allows for LRCAP to fly.

Additionally, 18 Zeros fly to Canton where the surviving AOs will gain some LRCAP protection.

The next turn will dictate how this ultimately plays out.

Shattered Sword, I thoroughly enjoyed, Japanese Destroyer Captain sound like a good next though I just made it to the
1930's in Kaigun.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/21/2018 4:03:43 AM)

June 28, 1942

The Allies do something unexpected. They make a FULL SPEED jump and get ahead of the Japanese by placing themselves between Ndeni and Luganville.

A massed strike of 74 Wildcats and 73 SBD bore in on the Japanese CVLs. They are met by 59 Zeros. Numerous Wildcats fall and the fighters get into the American Dive-Bombers but 67 of them survive to tip over into their dives.

YIKES!

It should be horrific. Is is somewhat. Looks like the American bomber pilots haven't been doing too much in the way of training. Damage:

CAV Kushiro 1 Bomb, CAV Tokachi 3 Bombs
CLV Zuiho 1 Bomb, CLV Shoho 4 Bombs
BB Yamato (nearly 30 SBD dive on her!!!) 3 Bombs
CA Maya 2 Bombs

14 hits out of 67 drops.

If it can be believed, no one is in sinking condition. Shoho is bad at 60% SYS but still able to move 8+ hexes next turn.

Could be FAR WORSE!

Give orders to FULL SPEED run north to get under Ndeni and Lunga's LRCAP. Separate 3 CL and 4 DD to form a STF leading the rest of the carrier group. Tomorrow will tell the tale as to just how bad this turns out to be...

June 27, 1942

There is no way to call this a battle as my small CTF tries to survive the Allied assault. It is purely a defensive stand--until tomorrow--and so I've tried to judge the results to this point. For two days, the Allies have assaulted the CTF and been met with strong Japanese CAP as well as AA. Thought I would POst the ATA/ATS results before doing a serious update.

Here are the June 27th plane losses:

Losses for the last turn (29th) where the CVLs were attacked in both phases of the turn:

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/22/2018 1:30:28 AM)

Total three day losses among four US CVs:

77 Fighters
59 DB
32 TB

That is serious attrition.

I authorize Lunga to release its attack planes: 92 Zero, 48 BD, and 76 Betty/Nell. They have stayed in range for two days. If they do tomorrow then we shall see of possible redress of the balance sheets.

Will Post a full report later today. Right now I lost two CVLs.

Here is the exchange we had with this morning's turn:

SEAN
Here you go. I'll be sporadic throughout the day due to festivities with the family and food comas from dinner. Thanksgiving is definitely the best holiday of the year.
Shame about those G6 CVLs...they were the really targets but seemed to take more GP hits than SAP. Would have been nice to see some bombs pierce their decks and not bounce off.

JOHN
They begin conversion next month to CVs. I was having kittens at the thought of losing them. Two CVLs is rough but not terrible. Yamato served as a good bomb absorber. The DB pilots SUCKED with three massed attacks that all broke through a spirited CAP and scored so few hits. It was shocking and very surprising to watch.

Did you use a Full Speed jump to get in front of me heading to Lunga? I was stunned when you got so far west. Gave some thought to continuing west towards Milne Bay but then thought going due north might surprise you. It didn’t.

My Zeros really chewed up a bunch of your planes I have those four CVs losing 152 planes in two days of Ops. OUCH!

Agree about the holidays. Going to look at the paper for shopping deals and will then run the turn.

HAPPY TURKEY DAY!

Will Post more when I get the chance.

July 1, 1942

My opponent led me astray and I am surprised. He CONTINUES the pursuit with a solitary CV. IT appears the Wasp is now deep in Injun Territory.

Activate the planes at Lunga (Range 14), Ndeni (Range 9), and Tabitueau (Range 14). No matter where he goes, there shall be a Japanese strike.

Morning Raid 18 Zero vs 26 F4F, 30 SBD, and 12 Devastator
Afternoon Raid 15 Zero vs 16 F4F, 29 SBD, and 12 TBD

Results from BOTH Attacks:
BB Yamato 1 B
CAV KUshiro 4 B (Still able to conduct Flght OPs with Zeros raised to 30 for tomorrow)
CAV Takachi 3 B + Ammo Explosion (Moderate Damage but good for 24 Knots)
CA Maya 1 B

Separate the STF (BB, 2 CA, 3 CL, and 2 DD) to turn and attack the CV TF and send the CAVs due west towards Buin.

This might be pretty interesting...

Sorry for the lack of updates. Holidays get pretty complicated with family time and lots of activities.

Should be able to do a series of updates tomorrow.

My eldest and I went and saw Creed 2 this afternoon. GOOD movie. So glad that Stallone agreed to doing this new set of films.

China
July 7, 1942

I may not be able to land a punch on the Allied Fleet but I am certainly CRUSHING China. Have never done anything like this at all. Communist China is gone. Nationalist China is collapsing on all fronts with over 100,000 Chinese Casualties in the last 30 days.

Japan has entered the high plains of Chungking. Wow.

Before anyone makes a comment, I shall note that there are very few IJA changes done in this Mod. A couple but nothing of lasting consequence. Michael is the architect of most of those and I'll invite him to add his thoughts if he wants.

Did they reduce the garrison requirements by about half for this mod?

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/25/2018 2:25:02 PM)

Good Question: I had massively RAISED the requirements earlier but Michael--as an Allied Player--thought that they needed adjusting down. He put that into place with this version so they are lower then what I had them at. Probably not too far from the original numbers of a stock game. My bet would be about 10-20% higher but that would be about it.

Michael can better answer then me.

Sub Ops

Couldn't hurt the American Capital Ships with airpower. Looks like there is another way!

July 5th I-18 hits BB North Carolina with a TT
July 7th I-7 hits an already smoking CV Wasp with a TT and gets an Ammo Storage explosion.

NICE!

Oddly The North Carolina and Wasp were hit by the same spread of torpedoes that also hit a destroyer, the best shooting in the history of submarine warfare. Yours was good too though.

John 3rd -> RE: The Shattered Sword: John 3rd vs. Anachro--BTS (11/29/2018 2:16:11 PM)

I wanted to thank Sean for Posting my comment on his thread yesterday. My Assistant Manager was caught stealing from the store and life has become very stupidly exciting this week. Been able to do my turns but no time for AAR. Sorry about that because the turns are reminding my of early-1944 with the action, lots of events, and many decisions/choices being made. CRAZY! I keep thinking my opponent's aggression will cost him. So far--NO. We'll see...

GOOD NEWS: July 12, 1942 MISTER TOJO goes into full production at 180 planes a month. That total will climb to 250 very swiftly. Been fighting the war with only the IJN Fighters. NOW we can bring in the IJA. It should help bunches.

My Assistant. Seven years of time together. Feel pretty betrayed and none too happy with this. Am considering whether to press charges or not. Not a pleasant week.

On the BRIGHT SIDE, I did receive my copy of a Georgia periodical yesterday. Thanks Paddleboy!

John, I'm glad you received it! Now, take a look at the address label on the back cover. Is it missing your city, state and zip?

SoPac Battle Review

It is nearly 10 turns since I did an update. Want to cover the particulars of the fight with my CVLs.

Losses for the fight were 2 CVL, 4 8,000T AO, and 2 PC. Considering that my 2 CAV and 2 CVL were up against 4 US and 2 Brit CV I shall consider myself lucky. The Japanese downed nearly 150 Allied aircraft for little aerial loss themselves. Wasp and North Carolina each took a Sub Torp while heading for Hawaii.

The decision for the Deep Strike near Tahiti cost me. Not going to do that again. Considering that the 2 CAV and BB Yamato could have been sunk as well really caps things off for me. That would have been SOOOOOOOOOO bad. OK. Lesson taken.

There are always moments in a multi-turn battle that one looks back to a says...I SHOULD have done this. That moment was when the US CVs did their full speed jump and cut me off from Tulagi/Lunga. My TF was next to Noumea at that moment and I absorbed a strike that cost me a CVL but everything else was OK. Had the choice of moving north to gain LRCAP from Ndeni or moving further west towards Milne Bay. I elected to gain the LRCAP. SHOULD have gone further west. This move would have surprised Sean, gained me a day, and saved a CVL plus damage to other ships.

The biggest surprise in this fight (other then the HORRIBLE performance of the American Naval aircraft) was the strength of my G.6 Hybrid Carriers. The Kushiro and Tokachi each took 4-6 bomb hits over the course of the fight and have lived to tell about it. AMAZING!

For those who don't know, this Mod allows for the exploration of the Hybrid Carrier through the London Naval Treaty of 1930-1931. The Fleets had no idea as to the final form of the aircraft carrier. Should they be BIG (like Lexngton or Akagi)? Should they be small and have LOTS of them (like Ranger or Ryujo)? Should they be a combination of surface and air capability? The last question was very intriguing to me. I had encountered the American version of the hybrid while doing my Masters Thesis in 1997-1998. That design fascinated me and once I began Modding, I decided to allow the exploration of this class of ship. The designs all come actual ones done by each Navy. Sources that I recommend are Warships After Washington by John Jordan, Jentschura's Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and The Hybrid Warship: The Amalgamation of Big Guns and Aircraft by Layman and McLaughlin. The re-written London Treaty allows for each major navy to build two of these experimental warships.

British Empire
The Brits build a pair of CAVs built upon an Exeter-Sized cruiser hull with 4 8" Guns, TTs, and 18 Planes. Just under 10,000T.

American Navy
The Americans build their two on the proto-hull of the Cleveland-Class CL. They carry 3x3 6" guns and have 21 planes on about 12,000T.

Imperial Navy
The G.6 design is much larger coming at 17,000T. In many ways the G.6 is designed as a Command Cruiser with Flightdeck. These CAVs carry good armor, 3x2 8" Guns, TT, and 30 planes.

All three fleets provide cruiser armor and fuel range while trying to balance armament and aircraft. Early Mod work showed these ships to be TOO capable! They could fight other cruisers, launch strikes, provide serious CAP, and keep right on going. NOPE! These Hybrids are to be useful but not truly capable. They are a combination of features that really don't belong. I massively scaled back their sorties and ammo load. Makes sense in terms of how many and how big can the magazines be. RIGHT?

Once the war gets going, all three navies are allowed to convert their Hybrids to full on carriers based on their respective size and tonnage.

Here are the G.6:
