This is a view of Bac Lieu and you can see two turns worth of broken bridges and I've got prescious few resources to deal with it. Not very many of the ARVN divisions are active from one turn to the next so I can't count on them for any ongoing operations. What I think I'll do is spread them out, park them on bridges and use them for outposts. Break them down into pieces for more bridge coverage.

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/5/2018 5:29:19 AM)

I've been googling the location of the aircraft during the war so I can park them where they were based during the actual conflict and I've hit a gold mine for F-100's. This is the list of squadrons that were at Phan Rhang AB, RVN during the war. I'm going to try to look up all of them. I'll post what I find so I can refer to it later.

I've found some information about the 3rd TFW and the squadrons that flew F-100's and where they were based.

Turn 2

The doomed ARVN Regional Force Militia holding Khe Sanh are overrun near the northern DMZ by 308th NVA Division and the US and ARVN air capability hits the NVA hard during Larry's turn as well as interdicting successfully during mine as one of my two rail repair units utilised to repair and improve the Ho Chi minh supply trail in this scenario is wiped out. Not good.

Elsewhere as Larry has turned possession borders off he is evidently finding it harder to locate VC assets so I decide not to be so proactive with disbanding them which results in VP's showing a +2 to the VC/NVA this turn.

Larry has gone big with an early commitment of US troops again with Marine,Air and artillery assets all called up which should push the EEV levels up...I await the protests in Washington :-)

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/5/2018 3:49:17 PM)

This is turn 3 in the delta; notice if you will that there's multiple broken bridges all done by only a few VC units. They escape into Cambodia or disband themselves before I can kill them. I only get to attack one when I find it by accident. And I need to search and destroy to find them. Somehow the "No Borders" option got turned ON and the border doesn't give me a clue any longer. So I've got to be constantly moving, constantly searching for the bad guys because I won't know they are near until they overrun a village or break a bridge, etc.

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/5/2018 4:05:26 PM)

IIRC the NVA has some arty that has a range longer than any of the arty tubes that I have so I'm forced to pull everybody back into the interior of South Vietnam just a bit further. I'm pulling back to just north of Da Nang to entice Ian into invading the north part of the country and the two RUFPUF units that can't move are just collateral damage. So sorry. There's one candidate VC unit on the HCM trail and I can't decide whether or not to bomb it. Last time I bombed it I lost a plane and didn't get any hits. D'oh. I'm toying with the idea of bombing one of the bridges of the HCM trail to drop it to delete the flow of supply flowing south. I'm assuming that there's other supply points for the NLF further south somewhere. Phnom Penh, Cambodia or somewhere.

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/5/2018 4:27:10 PM)

Here's a team of weapons mechanics at Da Nang loading a rocket pod under the left wing of an F-4B. This plane is from VMFA-513 and they are carrying the war to the enemy with two, sometimes three flights a day reguardless of the weather.

I used to drive the MJ-4 bomb lift truck, in this picture it's the Marine equivalent but it's the same piece of equipment I drove. I developed a lower back problem after about a year from leaning over the steering wheel to try to see the hooks on the bomb rack so I could line them up with the lugs on the bomb. When I worked on the alert pad we got so good at loading that we could load on one nude A-37 two 500lb bombs, two rocket pods with 19 Willy Peet ( white phosphorus ) Rockets and 1,500 rounds of .30 caliber ammo in the nose all in under 5 minutes. It took longer than that to refuel the plane, which happened while the bombs were being loaded for speed. It would have been a catastrophy if something had gone wrong.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/5/2018 9:41:40 PM)

Turn 3

Larry's evident problems tracking the VC allow another tick up in VP's to +3 as increased presence in the country allows more bridge destruction. Multiple attacks by US air on dug in NVA units in the North see little NVA loss but several aircraft shot down.

In anticipation of the imminent arrival of US marines and heavy artillery the NVA 312th and 308th Divisions redeploy in a defensive arc.

Given the issues Larry has with the game settings having borders "off" I have sent him an in game meesage to see if he wants to restart with the borders on...as at least not much of this attempt has been done. If he would prefer to carry on that is fine with me also.

Glad to see you both figuring out how to make this scenario work. AAR + Larry's personal insight makes for a great combination. Really enjoying these threads. Thanks guys.

Here's event number one, where a VC unit moves away from the scene of the crime. He dropped one of my bridges the rascal.

more like wild ass guessing but thanks for posting and I'm glad you like it so far. I'll try to make it more entertaining.

I was moving the arty unit around and found a bad guy. I've brought in some armor and I need some more units yet to get a surround on him.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 6:08:16 AM)

Turn 5

VC activity continues to be at a healthy level. Just because I could... and to be a pain in the ass a VC unit overran Chu Ngai airbase on the coast forcing lots of pilots and aircrews to make a hasty exity. (I did look out for Larry but he had already left apparently [;)])

I lost a VC unit to US forces in Dinh Tuong but elsewhere all survived to fight another day.

This is more than can be said for the poor ARVN RF garrison at Con Thien near the DMZ which was shelled to destruction from the north.

Air activity by the US remained both busy and largely ineffective.

Surprisingly the 308th and 312th NVA Divisions having dug in close to Khe Sanh do not see the wave of US troops they expected so conserve supply.

Any concerted offensive will need to wait until Cadre units plodding down the Ho Chi Minh trail are ready to go but for now the VC continue to do a great job busting bridges and cutting supply lines in the interior.

VP's tick up to a healthy +5 for the VC/NVA this turn.

Thanks for your kind comments

I am very much a novice compared to Larry (who isn't [:)]) but the scenario is a great one as the sides are so contrasting and there are so many options for each sides strategy. Initially the US side has most of the choices re scale and speed of escalation but I get more later on.

Soon I will get the choice whether to exchange a relatively strong NVA combat engineering unit for more repair capacity on the Ho Chi Minh Trail for example. I am very tempted to take this given how important the trail is for supply.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 8:36:23 AM)

Turn 6

A VC unity got surrounded and destroyed by a combination punch from US air and Special Forces down in the Delta in Vinh Binh province but managed to down a few aircraft in the process.

All remains calm south of the DMZ this turn as R and R takes place for the 308th and 312th Divns.

More VC infiltration takes place in the central provinces and it seems there is a co-ordinated screening push being made by US troops towards the Cambodian border which I am trying to evade.

Another tick up in VP's takes the current score to +6.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 4:10:02 PM)

Turn 7 and Turn 8

Little action other that Larry taking out a single VC unit in the Delta in each turn and some skirmishing up in Quang tri where another Regional Defence Force battalion of the ARVN is bombarded by long range artillery north of Da Nang.

In a nasty setback however a complete NVA supply unit travelling south towards the DMZ in North Vietnam is wiped out by interdiction.

VP's have pulled back to just +4 in the VC/NVA favour as VC activity is subdued given the large number of US forces operating in the country.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 6:59:32 PM)

Turn 9

More heavy air interdiction and also strikes on the Ho Chi Minh trail. It appears the NVA AA on the trail is totally ineffective which doesn't bore well.

In Quang Tri Province the NVA destroy the NVA garrison in Dong Ha and the NVA get their first objective as Quang Tri city falls.
The redeployment following this success gets hit hard by US interdiction however.

The VC and NVA co-operate in western South Vietnam to try to hurt isolated ARVN battalions but their strength is too high for the light NVA forces to attack at this time.

Larry has now reduced my VP score to +3.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 8:53:35 PM)

Turn 10

A better turn for the VC overall. EEV stands at 19 due to US troop arrivals and bombing at Hanoi and yet the VP total moves back to +6 for the VC as the success by the NVA in taking Quang Tri province plus small numbers of active VC elsewhere pushes the points total back up. Quang Tri itself is quiet this turn as the NVA Divisions recuperate after the interdiction strikes last turn.

This turn Larry's air strikes were less effective and a reasonable number of planes were lost without the disproportionately high losses we saw in our earlier game.

Having said the above the COIN operations he is running are extremely well organised with a slow press by Rangers, artillery and (particularly in the Delta) river patrols being effective VC spotters. I lost another two VC units this turn and had to disband two more due to them being about to be surrounded.

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/6/2018 9:08:23 PM)

I've been clearing out the coastal roads to get the flow of supply going and I've cleared some of the mountain hexes and the NVA has been raiding and then retreating in the north. Much of the north is now enemy territory but one of these days I'm going to take it all back.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 6:18:02 AM)

Turn 11

I was helped this turn as Larry failed a proficiency test before he could get too far into his murderous counter insurgency sweep but another VC battalion was caught and destroyed in the Delta. Two attempts at bombing the High Command HQ unit of the VC in Cambodia caused no VC casualties but cost the Americans more planes.

Up in Quang Tri where the NVA had melted back acrss the DMZ ARVN troops retook Quang Tri city but also pulled out immediately afterwards, realising how vulnerable it is. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth and mindful of a VP point up for grabs North Vietnamese troops re-entered to city.

This turn saw over a dozen new VC and NVA reinforcements and even taking into account the instantly disbanded political units who are sitting ducks this leaves more VC units on the ground than at any previous turn so I expect Larry will manage to seek and destroy more next turn.

The Ho Chi Minh trail gets repaired down south of Quang Tri so good progress is being made to improve supply.

devoncop -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 8:42:06 AM)

Turn 12

For the first time the VP total jumps by 3 to +7 as a combination of VC activity in Vinh Binh, Ba Xuyen , Bien Hoa and Thua Thien provinces plus the EVV hitting 32 thanks to the rapid US build up adds points to the VC total. Anti war protestors March in Washington reflecting public concern at the warmongering President [:)]

The NVA consolidate their hold in Quang Tri though a counter attack is expected.

Significant reinforcements are now optionally available via the Ho Chi Minh trail but Uncle Ho decides to plan a co-ordinated offensive so troops are being husbanded in rear areas for a bit push....

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 10:35:38 AM)

Here's the setup before I have moved anybody. Several VC units have wondered into some terrain that I've cleared before and they are standing out like a sore thumb. It's up to me to kill them now. I've got a VC cadre on the HCM trail that I feel the need to give some attention to. And I have successfully bombed the AA guns on the trail and have gotten hits without loosing any planes and I'd like to see if I can do that again. There's an NVA division at Quang Tri that's been making a nusance of itself. But he's got the long range rocket unit that can hit my units while it's still out of range of my stuff and I can't shoot back. I don't want to spend the +12 EEV points to get the longer range arty tubes though.

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 2:12:07 PM)

Here's the USS Midway at Dixie station and it's a full deck launch today and everybody's got someplace to go and something to do. I don't really expect the Mig-17's from Hanoi to reach out this far south but I'm not taking any chances. The F-8's at Yankee station are probably getting the most workout of all the three AS missions I have running. About 1/2 of the air fleet is on combat support and everybody else is on INT so that's about 36 CS and 40 INT and 3 AS missions running. I've got some squadrons that have but 2 or three aircraft and those I have on rest lest they loose both of them and kill the unit entirely. I'd rather not lose the entire unit if possible. That reminds me I need to check out the losses so far.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/899725C473A642A5884007356A104CD5.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 2:23:42 PM)

I've sorted the list on mission so that all the "rest" would huddle at the bottom and I've got about 10 squadrons that are missing too many planes to fly and you can see they are mostly Navy planes.

Also above those planes is a group of planes that I need to trim the range of yet. I find that I get better performance from the aircraft units when their range is trimmed to "fit" the map from the spot they are parked in. No need to patrol the off-map areas. The more they concentrate the better they are at recon, etc.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/E6DA74FDA2C947F09BE535813464F28C.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: CSV try II Ian is NLF larry is Allies csv_lgf_v1.0.sce (7/7/2018 2:49:41 PM)

The aircraft losses are a LOT less this game compared to the first one. I've got but two F-4(early) aircraft on hand and there's a need for them in the VMFA squadrons in Da Nang. 5 squadrons are on rest because they have too few planes to fly. There's several F-100 squadrons that are missing planes too. But overall we're in good shape.
