China

June has been a super tough month for the Chinese losing several thousand squads.

One of the justifications of stacking limits is to slow down the conquest of China, but what happens in practice is that it usually accelerates the fall.

Once the initial position is broken, the Chinese retreat back along the road seriously over stacking the next position draining the troops of supply and increasing the effectiveness of Japanese aerial bombing and land bombardment.

And when the fight gets to Chungking, it is so overstacked a successful defense is almost impossible to achieve.

This particular mod has given the Chinese Corp an enhanced anti-tank capability, but generally speaking the overstack penalty once activates simply snowballs and wipes out a defensive line very quickly.

I find SL make defending in good territory much more effective for the Chinese. If they do have to retreat, ideally there would be dug in troops behind, and as the retreated troops move back, the hex would again be under SL and the dug in troops able to stand.

Unless the Allied player is caught out, and didn't prepare multiple lines behind the front, SL alone should not make China harder to defend.

Against Greyjoy my Chinese managed to push back and crush a shock into Sian, and that was successful mainly because he didn't want to overstock his troops shocking over. Without SL he might have used double the troops and gotten a decent result and pushed everything back in a few days. The offensive player can always add more than the defender in a chosen hex without SL, and that makes defending really tough. You just can't move troops onto the front or behind to cover the next hexes before the attacker has broken through and moved into the rear reserve.

I found there that when frontline troops were tired, I could fairly easily trade them out since they would have had their SL reduced and the new unit would only overstack for a day or so, thus not losing supply.

I do not like it anymore ;). SL is working always for stronger side in my opinion. It using men number as limitation and does not take in count real value(fire power value) of squad. Basically on beginning it allows bring more fire power in hex for Japanese side and later on it allows to do the same trick for allied player.

Well, this is history more than stacking limits. A better set of devices will win in equal circumstances. This is why terrain bonuses, forts and awareness of hex side manoeuvre, reserve and multiple lines are crucial in big prolonged land battles.

Wargamr is doing a comprehensive analysis of the game. Not really sure what that means.

July 1942

IJA will most likely be forcing the crossing into Kienko in 10 days give or take. 100% prep, the entire HQ tree in range(corps, army, command).

Only 8 Divisions, tanks and artillery coming from this thrust...what is important here is that both Chinese AT units have been severely degraded. I believe the Allies have kept the 105mm howitzers in Chungking.

The new division, is I think, an American TOE unit, and normally leaves China.

Back to the game...1st week of July, 1942

Several naval clashes over the last several days as the Allies try to surge ships against the KB. I have so far been missing the retaliatory air strike...but we shall keep trying. Several Yank heavy cruisers will need yard time, one might have sunk, and the Americans have lost 3-4 times the number of destroyers Japan suffered.

All this action has drawn two maybe three American carriers back into the area...KB just refueled.

Two major attacks tomorrow, Luzon and near Kienko which might pursue into Kienko in China. Troops loading for Tabby invasion.

Lokasenna -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (9/14/2018 4:03:16 PM)

Allied CVs are still very weak in July 1942. Not as weak as spring, but still weak. They don't have TBFs, and the pools for their planes are shallow. Crush them while you can, if you can.

IMO, you got lucky in the Ise/Hyuga fights.

The day previous, Lightnings show up with a horde of P40 sweeping and do pretty good work on the KB's meandering CAP, while today we catch a bomber force.

Earlier, the KB moved into a dot base and launched a very weak strike against 4 American Heavy Cruisers that bombarded an island base killing everybody...only 10 of 80 Vals flew...but they did score several penetrating hits. All the torpedo bombers missed. Americans took the base by paratroop the next day overwhelming a SNLF COY that was flown in.

The Tabby invasion goes on the morrow, and if all goes well then some of the fleet will be freed up.

Yamoto is heading for the Aleutians...

Two battleships in drydock...

One fleet carrier repairing system damage for the next 10 days...

Lowpe -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (9/29/2018 12:39:41 PM)

July 14, 1942

The Allied invasion of Tabby comes full circle this morning as the Japanese invasion forces go in. Not fully prepared, but counting on the effectiveness of several weeks of almost constant naval bombardments. Forts are expected to be rated at 3...

This will be a shock attack landing.[sm=scared0008.gif]

Primary combatants will be the 2nd Marine and 24th Infantry Division along with 8 other support units for the Americans, while the Japanese are sending in the crack 5th Division and slightly less experienced 55th Division supported by the 14th Tank Regiment and a small naval support company. The 14th Army Corp is at the IJN naval dot base next door providing some level of coordination.

The bombardments go in prior to the landing...

Some Nells have been bombing the American base, from long distance and generally high altitude. Several days ago the American AA guns fell silent, the Nells dropped a little lower, but still were pretty much simply harassment bombing -- but here they actually targeted a decent target -- one that is often overlooked by the naval bombardments.

The Americans are well led, as can be seen from their force selection...

Can the Japanese, admittedly very inexperienced at atoll landings (this is my first non landing bonus invasion ever), pull off this shock attack?

Thanks, everyone.

Now the Allied focus is in the Aleutians, and the Allied carriers are pushing forward. IJN is retreating for now, and the three Japanese bases are at risk for a while.

Port Moresby is next on the list, and perhaps Horn Island.

Allies are night bombing Magwe, where they scored some success the first night, but failed on subsequent nights now that the Allies have activated night bombing.

I know float planes can give some slight cover for night raiders.
Have you tried Nates?

And congratulations on the counter invasion.
Any notes you would like to pass along on the amphib ship composition would be greatly appreciated (ie. load spread for fast deployment).

Using Oscars and they are doing very well in not being shot down. Nates would work too with good pilots, but I am very short on those squadrons by now. Just boosting up the radar and AA now.

I used both LSDs, as many AK's that I had close by (AK-t) but ran out and I think, but haven't checked, but I suspect xak-t are better than the xAP. I also used several AMC, the two of three training cruisers, embedded a battleship.

If a follow on invasion would be required I was going to wait 1-3 days for the ships to rearm and disruption to wear off the troops that already landed.

Lowpe -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (10/3/2018 7:52:52 PM)

Mid July 1942

Allies are probably stronger than Japan here, now in the Aleutians...but the IJN is on the way, and still not toothless.

Yesterday a large convoy showed up near Amchitka, and 5 Allied battleships have pounded the base two days ago...so it looked
like invasion.

The IJN had pulled back to replenish planes at Paramushiro and was only just heading back into contested waters, but was within a flank speed run to contest the invasion, but rather a mission speed run was decided upon...and lo, no invasion, good weather, and scratch one resupply effort of Attu.

Your aggressive approach this game is really paying off. I'm surprised the Allies keep pushing in the Aleutians after recent actions. Another gaggle of ships down and no appreciable reduction of the IJN.

The Tabiteuaea landing was really well timed and supported. To get back at it early before forts rose was key. Forts 3 is sooooo much easier than forts 6 for an atoll landing. Seeing a full Marine ID wiped out at this stage isn't common, and won't be easy to replace. [&o]

Tabi campaign can serve as a textbook example of why Allies should not start their island hopping too soon. Well played!

Lowpe -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (10/4/2018 7:08:33 PM)

Two more days and the KB would be reunited (except for Akagi undergoing some minor repairs for another 4 days at Yoko)....

So the question is to contest the landings, or is this a bluff, or let whatever happens happens, or somewhere in between.

The Japanese navy is close to consolidating with overwhelming air power...support ships and troops are close by.

adarbrauner -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (10/7/2018 10:28:08 AM)

Did you set your small destroyers squadron route voluntarily in a way such to intercept after the shore bombardment?

If so, why with only 2 destroyers and not 3 or 4? To lessen the risk and squadron's detection?

If so, a jem, worth embedding in WITPAE annals.

Lokasenna -> RE: Lowpe (Japan) vs Wargamr (Allies) (10/7/2018 3:57:36 PM)

What's the difference between a route and a rout? [;)]
