SIPRES -> America's Map kit (9/8/2018 11:48:50 PM)

Here is a link to a Map covering North and south America.
This is just a raw version. all coastlines, terrain, rivers, ressources, script had to be done

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v6qsj6c29b15mkd/AACzmZueM3_wY-YNOpq2LIwda?dl=0

I will update the maptile.dat as soon as I can, but it will require a lot of time
Then in case you use this map for a custom campaign, you will just have to import Maptile.dat to update coastlines.

A reference Map image file is also joined in the link with an indexed hexgrid, it will allow "easy" locating for ressources and rivers setup

This Map could be use for any new campaign design
- 1942 Japan invade USA
- Conquistadores Vs Mayas
- Union vs Confederate
- American war of Independence

ect.........

I hope you will find it usefull.

Christophe

Hello Sipres - I was wondering how much more work is planned on the map. Do you plan on adding the Amazon and Mississippi Rivers [:)]

I have been doing some graphics stuff.

Hi sPzAbt653

Coastlines are almost complete
I Just need to finish south of Argentina and Chile (cape Horn), small Bahamas islands + lake in north west territory.
Files are updated accordingly on 1st post link
I didnt plan to make streams but if you just need Amazon + Mississipi then I will add on next updates.
Its good to see a campaign at different era than WW2.
In case you need help for graphics, just let me know.

Christophe

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/18/2018 8:28:49 PM)

Thanks for the update. I think the Amazon and Mississippi Rivers are the only rivers needed, if you would like to draw them in [8D]

Indeed you are much better than me at graphics, but my Galleon doesn't look too bad, does it ? There is also a Conquistador helmet under the unit with the Spanish flag, I guess maybe there is a setting to show flags on HQ's or not, I haven't really looked for it.

SIPRES -> RE: America's Map (10/18/2018 8:40:02 PM)

Your graphics are really good, continue that way.
I think I got some Old SPI "ancient Natos",I will post them later Maybe you could find some usage for your mod
There is not really settings for HQ flag, but you could do a Nato flag sprite.png fully "blanked" then your conquistador helmet will appear.

Excellent! Now I can see the Conquistadors!

Changing unit sheet/bitmap colors - When I changed these to green it was a several step process [because of the png shading] using Recolor in Paint.net. Would you do it the same way or do you know a better way ? Next I will be changing Major 01's unit bitmaps to Red [for England].

I do actually work with Inkscape (vector graphics),so I did remade the original file in vectors in that way I can colorize my squares by 1 click, but the way you are doing with paint is giving good results.[sm=happy0065.gif]

I join the ancient Natos I got (but from what I have seen, you may have it already)

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/19/2018 11:42:26 AM)

I didn't have Ancient Natos, so thanks very much for those. I had grabbed the original counter sheets from Boardgame Geek and was using those icons [resizing them with Inkscape].

SIPRES -> RE: America's Map (10/19/2018 2:21:55 PM)

Thoses ones (Bordgamegeek also) could be usefull, In case you want color vs B&W silhouettes.

Wich majors nations you will run (Spain, England, Portugal, France, Netherland)?

It's all wide open at this larva stage of the scenario. The plan is to use SPI's circa 1976 Conquistador as a base, then to expand it into 'The Age of Exploration'.

Conquistador was a good game, but not an historical simulation. I would like to attempt to keep it a good game while making it more historical where possible given the parameters available within SC. I'm ok at graphics and game design and modding, but unfortunately I have no knowledge of the subject matter/time period. I will rely on what I can learn as I go, as opposed to relying on many years of subject study. This worries me as far as the end result is concerned.

Its always difficult to find good balance between history/gameplay
But the game engine is really flexible and I think there is always a "way" to achieve desired scenario.
I dont know either in details this part of history, and I would guess that to find accurate data is more difficult than WWII time.
I am always amazed how few hundred Spaniards could defeat Incas/Mayas civilizations (maybe the diseases they bring from Europe did a huge part of the "job")

Uncle Lumpy -> RE: America's Map (10/20/2018 5:05:39 PM)

If I recall correctly, both the Aztecs and the Incas conquered a number of neighboring tribes to create their respective empires. Many of the subtractive tribes joined the Spanish as allies and helped with the conquests. The diseases came into effect after both empires were already defeated, and affected all native peoples.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/21/2018 3:01:56 PM)

The Incas and Aztecs were also scared of horses and firearms, and thought these items were indication that the enemy were actually gods. Therefore, they usually choose not to fight. In cases were they did fight, the Indian way was to capture foes by knockout and take them prisoner for use as slaves, while the Europeans fought strictly to kill. This made for lopsided battles.

@Sipres - I'm putting in some mountains like the Andes, Rockies and Appalachians. Is there any easy way that you can indicate to me about where they should be placed ? Maybe a screen shot of those areas from whatever main source you are using ?

The main source I did use so far is the reference map present on the link(with hex indexes), but its only political map with cities and streams.
I will arrange some physical map layer (with same indexes) and add to the link this evening (just a question of layers and finding a good physical map image)
A SVG file is OK?

SIPRES -> RE: America's Map (10/21/2018 5:58:45 PM)

I just add a Physical map jpg file with hexgrid
This should allow to design mountains & hills

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/21/2018 10:32:39 PM)

Wow. Mr. Sipres has gone above and beyond what I could have ever asked for. With this I can now label hex locations and then accurately draw features [as seen in the blue circle below]. Thank you so much

In the inset at right we can see how 'mountains' were drawn on the original Conquistador map. These are 'impassable' hexsides. My idea for recreating these is to make SC3 River hexside graphics 'impassable' in the Editor and to draw the mountains using these river graphics [as seen in the blue circle]. I don't think it is reasonable to graphically redraw all of the rivers to try and match the original hatchmark graphics, but I will modify the SC3 Rivers to at least look different from rivers. I post this here so that others might be able to offer alternatives or better solutions.

Hi sPzAbt653,

To use river as impassable mountain terrain is a good idea.

However:

- The map scale got really much more hexes than the original boardgame (there is plenty of space), so why don't you use "high mountain" full hexes as "impassable", then no graphic work required.
- You could also use "plateau" full hex terrain as impassable in case you want to keep vanilla high mountain and a dedicated graphic for impassable hexes.
- In case you go on mountain crest solution using rivers, then just let me known if you will use minor or major river slot, as I will start Amazon soon.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/22/2018 12:12:06 PM)

I had wanted to use Depression for the impassable mountains, but they aren't hexside features. However, as you point out, there are more hexes [about five times more] and therefore the impassable mountains do indeed become larger than a hexside. So it makes sense to use an existing full hex graphic. Thanks very much, that saves work!

I have seen 'plateau' but have not seen a graphic for it.

You may definitely use Major River for Amazon and Mississippi.

SIPRES -> RE: America's Map (10/23/2018 8:19:33 PM)

Files updated
Mississipi and Amazon added (main streams) + Nato flag sprite (many south america flags added)

To sPzabt653
Dont forget to close Panama Canal.[:)]
Also regarding terrain I think it would be nice if you add jungle hexes in south America.
I know the graphic does not exist yet (but it will be for world at war)
So temporarly a clone image of actual forest with a different contrast/light could do the trick.

Thank you - How can I word the following properly - Can you let me know when you think your work is done to the point that a 1495 map is done to the extent of your involvement? Any way I type that question it sounds odd or weird. My thinking is that at some point I need to start working on the map myself for it to fit 1495-1700.

sPzAbt653 -> RE: America's Map (10/24/2018 5:30:46 AM)

Regarding Jungle terrain, initially I am going to try to stay with the original scheme [seen below at left]. So I have tentatively put together a jungle/forest tile [seen below at right]. It's way cool that SC let's us change the aspects of terrain tiles. Like everything else with this scenario, we'll see how it works out, it can always be changed [:)]

Well, hmmm. I just tried it out and, it kinda looks like crap. Maybe I need to work it some more.

Can you recommend how to import your latest map update. I had created a new campaign using your map, and I have been working on Bitmaps, Scripts and localisation files, so I don't want to trip over anything if I can avoid it.
