I got a small problem or maybe its not a problem..

I have played for the japs many years ago, and now started the new campaign. Its April 42, using scenario 50 Reluctant Admiral.

I am trying to force Tojo IIa research, and expanded the relevant RD facilities to production rate of 160 - I want all those Oscar Ic relegated to training duties as soon I can. Research rate over 100 was achieved about 2 months ago.

For about 1.5 game months, industry screen shows Research level of 4%. Date's not changing. What could be the problem there? Factories (I have something like 5-6 of them dedicated to Tojo production) are running, no red X on them, not on any turn...Most of the factories have 20000+ supply, HI points are available.

They must be fully repaired in order to provide any research points. Are they fully repaired?

Dang! That might be the crooks! It could even be that none is repaired fully, as I stopped further repair as the rate got to what I thought to be adequate until the production kicks off. Will check that when back from the office...

Your listed 'rate of repair' - maybe show a screen shot of those factories.

Here I am guessing:
Let's say you have 4 factories
Repaired - Repairing / Total
24 - 6 / 30
26 - 4 / 30
29 - 1 / 30
21 - 9 / 30
in this scenario you would be generating Zero R&D Points per turn, even though you have 100 repaired factories (across 4 locations)

The optimal R&D sized factory is 30. Once that is fully repaired you get a relatively reliable 1 point of R&D per day. If you have 500+ engines of that plane in the pool, you could get a 2nd R&D point.

Some tests and analysis was done years back about making a single monster (using your example nunber of 160) - if ALL were repaired, 160 factories of one location, then it would still only produce the 1 point of R&D per day (plus a possible +1 engine bonus).

The problem of creating a huge R&D factory (your example of 160 in one location) is the long time it would take to repair all those factories. Very Very best rate of repair I have seen is 1 factory repaired at a location per day. Having all 160 at one location puts your eggs into one random dice roll to repair or not while spreading 160 factories out over 5 cities gives you 5 random roll opportunities to repair a factory.

All the above is assuming the worst case scenario -- again, it would help to see the production screen and other wiser folks might chirp in and offer advice.

Yes, its exactly the case. I have 10 factories and none is repaired fully, quite silly from me. Is there a way to reduce the expansion plan? I have seen that many have round nice numbers of production set, but how to do that? I can only use expand and it doubles/adds 100? Am I missing a hotkey?

Don't expand production from the base screen; it only allows a doubling, which you have found out. Use the screen shown here (Industry Management), and expand by increments of 10, until your R&D is in multiples of 30 (and usually 30 each is enough). Also, don't use stockpiling to manage supply at each base, since as you can see you don't have 10000 and R&D won't occur. Set the supply "spinner" to 4000 +/- at each base and they will draw 3 times that from elsewhere (if supply is available), giving you over 10000.

And why are you stockpiling resources at Maebashi?

Realistic R&D ON or OFF?

You are going to have a lot more problems with a RA scenario than waiting for Tojos to come on line. There are supply restrictions in RA (a design decision to penalize Japan's starting stockpile for a more advantageous starting position), plus using the DaBabes factory model, your Refinaries do not produce supply.

You are spending too much supply on a mediocre mid-war air frame. You can get away with than if playing the AI. Against a human opponent, you may come to regret that investment.

Realistic R&D helps Japan, supply-wise, in getting the mid-war air frames out a little sooner so you can remain competitive with the human opponent thru 43-44.

You are using the wrong screen to do your industry upgrades and expansion.

Use the Industry Screen, not the Base/Factory screen.
(top menu button - looks like a factory)

Yeah wasting a lot of supplies and shouldn't do that on all those aircraft factories like that. Other models will be needed as well.

I am going against the AI, I am too irregular a player to go for PBEM... Some days of high activity, and then a month of a break in between.

I found that way over industry screen now, it would have been MUCH more efficient... I play WitP AE and its predecessors since the release of Uncommon Valor for ages now, and never found that one....

By now to rectify the problem I made sure to supply 10000+ in the bases, turned off repairs on all other aircraft factories in those locations, and trying to make the factories to repair ASAP.

Maebashi - a good note about resources - probably an error click which I missed.... Just made it off.

You need to do the things said above, but R&D factories repair at a set rate no matter what (as long as supply is available). There's no way to 'speed' up repair. Generally speaking it will take the factory about 2/3rds of the time from when it was set to expand (to say 30) and its normal production date. IOW if the factory was expanded to 30 and the aircraft would enter 'normal' production in say 9 months, then it will take the factory ~6 months to complete repairs. Then and only then will the points start to accumulate toward the advanced deployment of the aircraft.

There is a chance that it would produce 2 points of R&D in a single day, but its so small as to not be worth doing this.

Unless you're planning to have that factory be size 60+ in any case, and let it slide into production when the airframe is ready.

I've done this with the Frank factory that starts at 55, and the Judy. I don't know if I ever got 2 points from them, though.
