R Adm Scott was killed in battle. half the baseforce was removed. I'll see about sending
more ships.

Scouted Brisbane CV to return to Noumea. Hopefully one of these days I can slip the leash

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/08/42

under 1k supply and fuel remains at Cairns and Cooktown combined. (It cost more then I would have liked)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/09/42

Well Magoo you've done it again. 2 CV have to go back to PH (for R&R and AA upgrade)
I've put myself in a pickle. Outnumbered with 2 damaged CV do I leave em and run with the
2 healthy? No one would do that. Turn into the wind. No more unanswered strikes. I'd like
1-1 exchange at least. Clear the runways (good thing I built those emergancy airfields)
(I have the insane idea I should transfer all the airgroups ashore and run. When the enemy
comes down after my empty carriers I'd whack him from Kourmac. However I'm afraid the weather
would ground my LBA while he sank my CV so I am left with turning to fight. I'd split the TF
up and run if I was only interested in points. But caught fair and square I feel I own the enemy
an honest fight. The weather could still help me out (and monkeys might fly out my butt)
Steak and Eggs for aircrew. Clear the flight deck.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/10/42

Crap crap crap. I could have retreated away. Hit a bunch of stupid surface ships. The weather had the Jap
CV socked in. I'd be back in Noumea tomorrow. Now I'm sitting here with tired airgroups.
Why Why Why do I always take the rough road? I'm certain to get pounded now. My goodness
count thoses bastards. I'd never try to fight that many CV with just 4.

Admiral DadMan -> And So, The Battle is Joined... (6/30/2003 9:16:28 AM)

Here's our first CV on CV battle

USN:
Lexington, Yorktown, Enterprise, and Hornet with 340 aircraft in one TF

v.

IJN:
Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Zuikaku, Ryujo, and Zuiho with 400 + aircraft in two TF's.

Junyo is operating to the rear to provide support in a third TF (she was supposed to be LR/CAPping the BB TF).

BillBrown -> (6/30/2003 10:00:46 AM)

So what happened? The world waits for news.

**Yorktown (3 bombs/6 torpedoes), Enterprise (16/3), and Hornet (5/6) sunk. Lexington was hit hard too (10/5), probably will sink tomorrow. I feel sorry for the USN Commander. His men fought bravely. I was very happy to catch the CV's in the open sea. Hitting ships in port is a more problematic venture.

**CV Soryu, CV Zuikaku, CVL Zuiho, and CVL Ryujo have all taken substantial damage, and may need to retire for repairs.

**I will continue to pursue cripples for one more day, but I worry that I'm making a mistake.

By the time they're ready to sail again you could be in a better position to handle them more roughly.:D

**CARRIERS!!! Recon puts two more CV's in Port Noumea (Saratoga and Wasp if there are two). I'll have to find a way to deal with them, as that CV battle took a toll on my ships. It was a D@MN good thing that I got his CV's earlier, because he would have been formidible now if he had 6 fleet CV's available.

**My math says that it takes three of my CV's to equal two of his, so I could still have a problem.

Wow it was nice of Dadman to train my ships in night combat. I'll have to send Astoria back
to PH but all my ships got a nice 10-20 point bump.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/25/42

I'll pull his tail a bit and retake Cairns via FT and then abandon it again.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/26/42

I have to live with him hitting my ports. It's the only chance I have. First we kill the
CV pilots (86 bombers lost last turn) Then one day an attack by LBA will break through and
sink a few IJN CV.

2 of my surface TF's took off for PM without orders. Don't know why. Hope they don't get hurt too
much as a result. CA Austraila is hurt already.

senseless damage. First batch of ships departing for Rockhampton for crossing to Noumea.
(I have to locate enemy CV prior to starting.)

Did you ever figure out why your TFs did that? That is a very worrisome goof-up by the AI if there isn't some mistake that you made behind it.

Thanks -

Same thing happened to me in my game with Attack Condor. 3 SC TF just decided to go home when I ordered them to bombard Townsville. Except in my case that same turn every transport TF that finished loading(4 different ports) also completely unloaded(in 1 turn) and sailed to their destination. Cost me 3-4 turns in my invasion of Oz. Some big glitch really hit. Condor kept asking what is taking so long.

Also have had problems with Mutsu battlegroup not moving for 2 turns 2 separate occasions despite repeated orders. Really screws up your coordination.

This sort of thing happens infrequently, but often enough for me to think of it as the "ah nuts - we want a new commander" syndrome. I find that if I don't disband my TFs frequently and rebuild them, they start to give problems - either not doing something they are supposed to do, or doing something I didn't ask them to do. Once I disband a "hard-headed" TF the new TF tends to do what I want. Therefore I rarely leave TFs sitting around once they've done their initial task.

I have nothing concrete on this, but it is similar enough to things back in Pacwar days that I do the disband/reform routine in UV "just in case". ( I used to think that it was a memory issue with Pacwar, because there were times that I couldn't get a TF to sail no matter what combination of things I tried. This tended to be late in a game when I had a lot of ships, troops and so on. )

Hi, What I think happened was the turn I made all these TF's at Townsville I first made a sub transport TF and assigned PM as homeport. Then when I made my surface TF's rather then them defaulting back to Townsville they retained the PM homeport setting. (And I just missed noticeing this. Once I found them out at sea they had PM for Homeport-and I had left them at retire so they could react to Cairns but return to TV)

Ahah! That sounds like it! :)

That's an interesting feature in UV ( and carrying on to WitP too ) and it does require you to keep on your toes when creating lots of TFs at the same time in the same base.

Good - so your problem isn't likely a true "WTF" intermittant.

Thanks again -

I like the way Mogami purposefully exposed his fleets around Townsville to air attack.
He appears to be using Townsville as a sinkhole for IJN air power and the allied ships that aren't sunk can patch the holes safely in port.
I know where I'd be patrolling my subs as the IJN :)

lurking IJN CV can find her. 4 of the DD arrived safely and were returned to PH.

She will be in repair for 6 months. (But at least she is safe now)
